From the President I thought you would be interested in the below pictures from

the August 1987 Issue of the Irish Setter Club of America “Memo to

Members.” A whole stack of back Memo issues were given out at

the 2015 ISCA Nationals in Georgia. If you look VERY closely at the top picture, you will see that the dogs are Irish Setters! It is a photo of the 1934 ISCA Nationals held at the Morris and Essex Dog Show. The beautiful owner/handler in the second picture (taken 53 years later) is our own Karolynne McAteer, the Chair for the May 2017 ISCA Nationals in Warwick, Rhode Island. Karolynne spoke to our club at the May 2nd EISA General Membership Meeting about her need for a theme for the ISCA Nationals. A theme is ab-solutely essential in order to get the ball rolling on the entire week of programs for a National. Personally, I love themes that provide an opportunity to dress up somehow. So, when I read Susan Sullivan‟s

proposal for a pirate theme, I was immediately hooked when she sug-gested a “Friday Night Shipwreck

Party” where members could dress

up “in pirate or wench regalia.”

Karolynne liked Susan‟s ideas also

and asked that they be presented to the EISA membership. I am sure you will also enjoy reading Susan‟s

exceptionally creative ideas.

ISCA 2017 Theme Idea

Ahoy, me Hearties! Landlubbers, Old Salts and Sea Dogs alike- Did ye know? Avast ye!

Rhode Island was discovered by a pirate, named by a pirate and nurtured by pirates.

Perhaps a pirate theme might be appropriate for the

2017 ISCA National in Rhode Island.

Page 7: Summer Issue 2015 Calendar of Events · 2015 Calendar of Events . 2015 Calendar of Events (Approved. Jan. 10, 2015; subject to change) * ISCA events; TBD (tentative To Be Determined)

7

If you have attended other National‟s in Rhode Island you may remember the tons of pirate paraphernalia in the local stores. I still have a Blackbeard t-shirt I pur-chased there and a number of pirate bumper stickers. It is my guess that Irish setters would love a pirate‟s life. A PIRATE theme would be FUN, EASY and INEXPENSIVE.

HOW COULD THE THEME BE EMPLOYED?

I have brainstormed (along with Sandy Jones, Debra Hamilton and Fiona Geiser)(Mariette‟s idea to honor dogs from past decades has been incorporated) some ways

the theme could be utilized throughout the week.

JOLLY ROGER: A Jolly Roger was a pirate‟s way of sending a message. The

sample Jolly Roger above has an Irish setter, an agility pin, and both a show and an obedience lead, thus symbolizing what activities will be held throughout the week. It could be flown everywhere. Small flags could easily be made from paper and laminated. Perhaps a large flag could be made or purchased. I am sure Dawn Secord could make us a fantastic flag. There could be different Jolly Rogers for

breed, agility and obedience.

DECORATIONS: A wealth of easy decorations could be made or purchased at the Dollar Tree. Fishing nets, crabs, lobsters, fish, and ships will all fit the mood. Pirate bandanas, eye patches, treasure maps, hooks, lots of beaded jewelry and black spots would work too.

A pirate ship for the lobby and for picture taking

Pieces of 8 (chocolate?) or doubloons could be on tables or in

goody bags

.

2. THE HIDDEN TREASURES program: would identify the “Hidden

Treasures “ in the Irish setter world for varied time periods. This was Mariette‟s

idea and would fit in beautifully with the theme.

Friday Night: Perhaps a SHIPWRECK PARTY. Imagine some pirate decora-tions, Pirates of the Caribbean and old Erol Flynn pirate movies playing silently on a large screen, pirate drinks-a lot of rum- and everyone dressed in pirate or wench regalia dancing perhaps to sea type or reggae music. Contests could be walking the plank or we could create a Treasure Hunt – Give clues out throughout the week at the show sites that will lead to a supply of treasure maps. Make the treasure maps lead to the buried/hidden treasure which could be anything our budget allows, including gold foil chocolate coins

or bottles of rum.

Host Club: Could offer pirate type eats – a BOOTY PARTY? http://allrecipes.com/recipes/holidays-and-events/events-and-gatherings/special-themes/pirates/

Poop-Decks- could be the signs where dogs would potty. (Ye can swab the poop

deck, but ye can't poop on the swab deck.)

Seating at events could be identified by pirate names or ship names.

Picture photo props: stocks, walking the plank, pirate ship, large treasure chest

So what do ye think? Could we utilize the stories of Rhode Island and the pi-rates, including Captain William Kidd, Captain Thomas Paine, Henry Mor-gan, Blackbeard and female pirates Anne Bonney and Mary Read and have a fun filled national? These are just a few thoughts.

Imagine what wonderful ideas we could come up with working together as a club!

Thanks for considering this idea! Suz

The Secretary also reported the current status of all AKC and ISCA filings are complete for all Specialties and for our supported entries up until Somerset KC except for the paperwork required for the 2015’s Memorial Day weekend cluster which has not been

received. This was referred to Peter Kubacz for follow-up and tabled for the next meet-ing or a special meeting, if required. The Secretary reported that the AKC Educational report was compiled and filed, as was the updated list of Officers and Board members. Treasurer's Report: The Treasurer reported that EISA took in more

revenue than they had expenses for 2014. Basically, this is the result of cutting back on the Blarney expenses, the overhead for the Indoor and similar cost containment efforts by the Board. In addition, the Agility Trial run as a fundraiser for the 2017 National was profitable, resulting in funds being earmarked for the 2017 National EISA will host.

Total Income for 2014 - Total Expenses for 2014 - Balance in all accounts @12/31/14 - The Treasurer’s report was put on file.

President's Report: The President proposed a list of Committee chairs and committee workers per the attached list. A motion was made and approved to accept the proposed committees as presented. Motion to Approve: Anne Marie Kubacz

Standing Committees: (in order of presentation)Audit Committee: Pat Lyons will arrange to perform the audit of the

Treasurer’s books. She will be assisted by Fran Sloughfy.

Blarney: Suze Sullivan reported that the next Blarney deadline was Jan 15th

Membership: Fran Sloughfy reported that after the payments at the Board meeting, she had about 8 memberships still unpaid. Some discussion was held on the due dates for reminders and it was acknowledged that the Treasurer will send out “final notices,” per

the list submitted by Fran, by March 31 since dues MUST be paid

by April 10th to retain membership.

NJ Dog Federation: No report at this time. Nominations: No report at this time.

Public Relations: This committee now encompasses the Website and Facebook site as well as any other public relations need and will be headed by Debra Hamilton. Fiona Geiser reported that the website is doing fine and a new counter has been added to determine activity. Some discussion was had regarding the use of cookies to follow up on those who “surf” our pages, some Board members

expressed discomfort with this suggestion and it did not proceed further. Fiona did offer to begin teaching others how to maintain the website and expressed a desire to incorporate more members into the site’s management.

A motion was made and approved to renew the website registration. Motion to Approve: Lynn Kwiatkowski

Second: Peter Kubacz

Vote to Approve (voice vote): Unanimous

Vote to Disapprove or Abstain: None

Facebook – Lynn K informed us that EISA has received about 190 “likes.” Supported Entries: Peter and Anne Marie Kubacz reported that the paperwork for NBKC and Bucks have been submitted and approved. Our Judges for NBKC on March 21, 2015 are Mrs. Mary Ann Alston for Breed and Ms. Barbara Pepper for Sweeps. Our judges for Bucks County KC on May 2, 2015 are Mrs. Polly Smith and Ms. Susan Kwiatkowski for Sweeps. The paperwork for Somerset KC is pending the judge’s as-

signment. Peter will pursue information on the Memorial Day weekend supported entry per the Board discussion, and will respond to the President with his information by the Indoor. Trophies: No formal report at this time but Peter & Anne Marie Kubacz informed the Board that Nancy has trophies purchased through approximately 2016 with some possi-ble “fill-ins” needed. The combination of trophy and rosette costs appear to be running

at a breakeven with funds collected.

Events Committees:

Agility Events: The Agility Trial was a financial success. Funds that were raised were earmarked for the 2017 National. The elkhound club was very nice to work with and very helpful. The Committee is considering reducing the Friday event we run by 1 judge. Some discussion was held regarding continuing the current match or making other changes. The issue was tabled until after our Feb event since other clubs are running an event whose outcome might influence our decisions.

EISA Field Trial: All paperwork has been filed for 2015. Lynne Godshall will handle breakfast & lunch for 2015 and Suze Sullivan will handle dinner. There is a

financial concern with using the local wrangler so other options are being pursued to provide horses. All expectations are that the event will run at a breakeven.

EISA Fun Day: No report at this time.

EISA Indoor (Winter Garden Specialties, Rye NY): The Treasurer’s address has been

updated with the WGS committee. Everything else is in place.

EISA Outdoor (Harvest Cluster): Debra Hamilton & Fran Sloughfy reported that the wrap-up phone conference on the 2014 Harvest Cluster is scheduled for Jan 11, 2015. A check will be issued.

Anne Marie Kubacz reported that all AKC paperwork for this show has been filed for 2015.

ISCA National 2017: No report at this time.

Bench Show: The following people have been assigned to the Bench show committee for their respective events in the event their services are required.

Conformation: Peter Kubacz, Lydia Miller, Pat Lyons, Debra Hamilton, Lynne God-shall, Bob McKay, Rick Krasley and Brad Porterfield Field Trial: Suze Sullivan, Karolynne McAteer, Lynne Godshall, Pat Lyons, Jean Culver, Kevin Culver Agility: Sandy Ambrogi, Suze Sullivan, Anne Marie Kubacz, Lynn Kwiatkowski, Lynne Godshall, Sue Kwiatkowski

New Business:

EISA Property – Discussion ensued regarding the ongoing storage and maintenance of EISA property at member homes. Specifically, the storage of ring chains and stanchions among other items. It was agreed that Fran & Debra would bring up the potential transfer of these items to the Harvest Cluster for their use as one solution. The matter was tabled until the next meeting.

Judges Selection – The Corresponding Secretary read the responses of several member selected judges regarding their costs and anticipated expenses. The Board discussed the allocation of these Judges based on their availability and to minimize the financial bur- den on EISA but to ensure the use of the members’ favored selections. Contracts will

be sent to the Judges based on this discussion, once commitments are received, they will be announced. Trophy & Ads for ISCA events – After some discussion about finances, dollar amounts and potential benefits of these contributions, a motion was made and approved to offer a trophy donation to place a club ad in each catalog for the following ISCA events: ISCA National Conformation, Obedience & Agility Specialty, ISCA National Field Trial & ISCA National Hunt Test & Walking Trial.

Financial reporting – Pat Lyons raised the issue of inadequate financial reporting by event and suggested that the financial report submitted by the Agility Trial committee should be a model for all future events. Fran Sloughfy and others concurred, acknowledging that this financial reporting was done in the past but has been “lost” in recent years and it is important to return to this process for

budgeting purposes. A motion was made and approved stating that it will be the responsibility of the Board Liaison/Chairperson to provide an “Income &

Expense” report within 60 days of an event’s end, even if the final figures are

incomplete. An “Income & Expense” template will be provided by the Treasurer

to each Board Liaison/Chairperson by email. (Anne Marie will provide the Agility Trial template to Pete.)

Motion to Approve: Patricia Lyons

Second: Fran Sloughfy

Vote to Approve (voice vote): Unanimous

Vote to Disapprove or Abstain: None

At the request of 5 members, Debra Hamilton, Anne Marie Kubacz, Fran Sloughfy, Mariette O’Malley and Suze Sullivan, an “Honorary Membership” will be presented to

Sandy Jones for her service as EISA’s Field Trial Secretary over the last decade (or

more). Ms. Jones is a member of Potomac Irish Setters and performs these services as a courtesy to our club.

Motion to Approve: Lynn Kwiatkowski

Second: Peter Kubacz

Vote to Approve (voice vote): Unanimous

Vote to Disapprove or Abstain: None

Unfinished Business:

Annual Awards – Lydia Miller returned several options to the Board to address the multi-title situation for our annual awards. (Currently, new plaques are issued for new titles.) In the future, members will be permitted to choose from two options, a singular plaque which allows for a replaceable plate or a larger plaques with room to add the new titles. Lydia will submit additional details through the Blarney for the membership to make their individual selection.

Constitution: Mariette O’Malley reported that the committee had completed their

initial work and that the Constitution was ready for Board review. She proposed a timeline that would provide for a final Board review of the corrected draft and mailing to the general membership in time to allow for member input and comment at the NBKC general membership meeting and subsequent review by the Board with the intention of final presentation to the membership for approval at the Buck’s general membership meeting.

A line by line review of the proposed Constitution was then held by the Board. AdjournmentA motion was made and approved to adjourn the meeting was at 4:30pm (I think).

Motion to approve was made by Anne Marie Kubacz; seconded by Lydia Butler. A voice vote unanimously approved the motion. Wel-come Alex!

Agility/Fun Day: Lynne Godshall reported the date as July 26th , to be held at Allen‟s Kennels in Moorestown, NJ around noon. The Day will include activities

for all dog owners, including an opportunity to try Obedience, Rally and Agility events with some limited training lessons. A Board meeting will be held in the morning followed by a picnic, a short general membership meeting and festivities. EISA members, friends and prospective members are encouraged to join in.

Annual Awards: Lydia Miller, Annual Awards chair, presented this year‟s Annual

Awards. The new plaques were well received by the membership. This year‟s re-

cipients were applauded for their achievement.

Constitution: Mariette O‟Malley reported a second e-mailing and formal mailing of the “Draft” Constitution will be sent in early July. Proposed changes and feed-

back should be provided to the Board prior to the July 26th meeting for the BOD to discuss. The Membership will have a chance to raise comments at the Play Day General membership on that same day, July 26th. It is hoped that a “FINAL” Constitution can be presented and voted on at the Som-

erset Kennel Club show in conjunction with our general membership and picnic at this event.

Field Trial: Suz Sullivan discussed the Field Trial event scheduled for September 12, 2015 in DE. Breakfast and lunch will be available along with a pot luck dinner. This year is not in conflict with Somerset so please consider joining the Field Trial-ers and learning about the hunting instinct in our dogs. An amateur walking stake is available for all Irish Setter newcomers and several of the “expert” trailers help

with preliminary lessons every year for newcomers. Lots of fun and good times for all, especially the dogs!

New Business: Karolynne McAteer as chair for the 2017 ISCA National discussed several topics involving the initial planning for this event. Most important was the need for a theme. Mariette discussed the idea of linking the theme to the daily events and proposed the idea of a “through the years” idea. Other ideas are welcome and ac-

tively sought as this must be decided soon. Chairpeople are needed for several committees, more detail and signups will be available in the Blarney. Please contact Karolynne if you are willing to help chair or assist. If you would like to contact the chairperson on a committee you wish to work on, please do so asap. A tentative schedule has been outlined as follows:

WHY OBEDIENCE By Susan Kwiatkowski

Summer is in full swing and for those training an Irish setter for Obedience Compe-tition, the nice weather allows us to get outside and practice with many distrac-tions. Working on grass can offer challenges not encountered indoors. A common one is for dogs to resist sitting on the grass. I guess it is akin to a tickle. Another is retrieving a dumbbell in higher than normal grass. Not only can the grass get in the way but there are always added scents to distract the dog. And I haven‟t even men-

tioned the “B”word for those dogs with high prey drive. Birds of course just seem

to instantly appear when we begin to train. While some obedience competitors opt for indoor shows only, the opportunity to train outside should be kept on the list of different places to work the dog when getting ready to compete. While it is harder to keep the dog‟s attention, remember

practicing with more difficult conditions than you have in a competition ring, makes it easier for our canine friends to work in the show ring. If you can, have someone tape your practice session worked under difficult condi-tions not making any corrections. You will get to see what triggers a misstep within the exercise and give you the opportunity to be ready to correct for it in your next session. It also allows you to view and improve your handling techniques. View the tape with these questions in mind. Did I do something that was inconsis-tent and could be misread by the dog? Is the same mistake being made throughout the training session? (for example crooked sits). Does the dog‟s pace need to be

changed? (figure eight exercise). How‟s my foot work? Also have a tape made of a training session where you are correcting the dog when a mistake is made. This allows you to check the timing of your corrections and see that you are making appropriate corrections. It allows you to see if your correction was effective when you re-do the exercise . Having an experienced competitor cri-tique your team‟s performance is also beneficial. Others see things we may over-

look. The old adage, „Practice Makes Perfect,‟ surely applies to obedience training. Re-

member, if you are taking a class don‟t

forget to train during the session. Don‟t just go through the motions

because you think your dog knows the exercise. Fine tune the performance so that when you do compete, you can be proud of a JOB WELL DONE! Happy Training.

AGILITY: PURSUIT OF THE DOUBLE Q

I have been doing Agility for 20 years now. I have seen a lot of dogs and handlers come

and go due to pure training unfulfilled goals and frustration. I have seen a lot of techniques come into favor and leave just as quickly. Some handlers teach the ob-stacles first and want the dogs to get them as quickly as possible so they reward speed and then get frustrated when the dog can‟t turn or collect into the weaves or a tunnel. They reward the speed rather than the team effort. My philosophy is to build the team relationship first and all good things will come!

Given the fact that I run Irish Setters in agility and that I also show in the breed ring, obedience, and the field, I want it all!

The stride of the majority of setters does not lend itself to early speed with a short turning radius. How many doors has your puppy slid into? Forward speed is fun for young dogs, turning is not, unless something moves and chase is engaged. So, I spend a lot of early lessons on turning and flexibility.

This is also the time I introduce the jump line and collection (check in). I reward a lot for come and go. Come to me or look at me is a head turn. Saying the dog‟s

name means look at me.

No name means go away from me or look away or do not look at me (no check in, no head turn). They are going to a target (the obstacle) that they are to look for.

Puppies learn to do figure 8‟s around a jump at a varied height and then go in-between two jumps. At the same time I am teaching jump chutes with ground rails for footwork, learning to drop each leg and still take off and land from either foot. I will put the table the end of chute so they are getting rewarded each time they get on the table. There is a target and a cookie on the table. I then go in and reward a sit and then release the rewarded dog back to me. Then repeat. The dog is re-warded for start line behavior while another cookie is placed on the table. I reward start line behavior about ½ of the time, so that the stay is just as beneficial as the go or break-a-way.

This then becomes the conditioning part of class. The bars are raised as the puppy matures, 4 jump ground rails in the line. I will also change angles and distances as the lesson goes on and handlers can work while others are doing stations.

As the dog learns each part of the job I will change from an open target to a closed target or a food motivational toy, which requires my assistance to get a cookie. I will wait at the end of the line and mark the desired behavior with a clicker or other behavior marker and then reward. I then increase the job to include the return. I will change the table to a tunnel or weaves where we use a thrown reward (ball) to reward drive.

The combinations

are unlimited. Just remember that if you want to emphasize control, reward with a stationary reward. If you are working on drive reward with a moving toy in the direction the dog is to go. Weaves poles are not rewarded from the hand. The dog‟s

focus should not be on you during the job. No checking in during weaves causes miss steps. On contacts reward the release, thus giving the dog permission to move off of the obstacle.

Keep you and your dogs cool during this time of year, dogs do not sweat they must drink and so most you.

EISA Supported Specialty – Sat. May 2, 2015 Bucks County Dog Show – Erwinna, PA Picnic – Annual Awards – Membership Meeting

Everyone agreed. It was a perfect day for a dog show and a picnic. While our Irish Setters enjoyed the cool grass, an enthusiastic crowd gathered ringside for Sweeps judged by Susan Kwiatkowski and Regular Classes judged by Polly Smith. Picnic coordinator, Lydia Miller, then called everyone together for a delicious lunch fol-lowed by a General Membership Meeting. The meeting concluded with the annual awards in which the accomplishments of our amazing Irish Setters were acknowl-edged. (The dogs want to make sure that everyone knows that they REALLY appreciate the human help of their breeders, groomers, handlers, and loving owners. They also want you to know that their show results can be found at: http://infodog.com/RE-

FROM the Editor’s Desk Please continue to send in your summer and fall wins, news, pic-

tures, reports and setter tails for publication in the Blarney.

The deadline for submission to the 2015 FALL Blarney is

September 25th. It is imperative that contributors honor this

due date. The due date for the Fall Blarney is set so that I

can complete the Blarney prior to Morris & Essex and the

Harvest Cluster. This will allow me to attend those shows and

then quickly add in their information, thereby getting the Blar-

ney out to members in a timely manner. Thank you in advance

for honoring the upcoming deadline.

I’d like to thank Fiona Geiser and Alice Kovacs for all their

kind help. — Suz

SETTER TAILSA friend who recently whelped a litter wrote this, it made me laugh and brought back

great memories……

Do you have puppy fever?

Let me give you some healing thoughts...

Do you enjoy reading, watching TV, playing on your IPAD or whatever? Is that down time relaxing? When the puppy arrives, you will get those times in very short bursts.

Is peace and quiet a normal thing in your home? When the puppy arrives, quiet either means napping OR something incredibly awful is happening.

Do you or yours kick off shoes before entering? Is buying new shoes, slippers, flip-flops or whatever an enjoyable experience for you?

Do you have agility equipment? Do you set little courses? HA! Try doing that with a puppy attached to your foot or eagerly climbing on or going through or carrying away what you are trying to set.

Is sleep a necessary thing in your life? How do you feel about 5:15 live alarm clocks?

Have you come to a place and time where you can run an outdoor extension cord, say to a pool cover pump, and not be concerned about it? And, do you have all kinds of computer wires, phone chargers, lamp cords, etc. in your home that you don't worry about? That will change instantly.

When you shop for plants, do you routinely grill the nursery owner/ manager about possible toxic properties of each plant in your cart, even vegetables?

Is your yard free of holes?

What shape is your old steam carpet cleaner in?

Can you handle earthworms being carried inside and shredded before coffee in the morning?

Page 29: Summer Issue 2015 Calendar of Events · 2015 Calendar of Events . 2015 Calendar of Events (Approved. Jan. 10, 2015; subject to change) * ISCA events; TBD (tentative To Be Determined)

How wide ARE the picket spacings around your garden and pool?

Are you aware that many of those cute Kodak Moments involve something naughty, grubby or stinky?

Do you remember how fast a puppy can be? They can whip into a shed, garage or other area with a door faster than a lizard and then thankfully scream like they are being murdered when the door is shut thus trapping them. One is thankful for that with the heat and one only does that once and lives in terror that it might happen again.

Do you know how attractive a dangling plastic garbage bag is to a puppy and do you know how high a puppy can leap to grab it while it is being carried outside? Do you know how easily those needle teeth can rip the bottom out?

Oh yes, sigh, the needle teeth......

Do you know the sweetness of carrying an exhausted puppy in your arms as you take them into your bedroom and put them in their crate for the night?

I guess we could use crates and x-pens more BUT, that's not our way. So, the mini man with all of his puppy needs, wants, and brightness is ruling this house right now. As we knew he would.

Someday, he will join the ranks of the reliable, well mannered, non destructive, companions that live with us .....someday..... Someday......someday.

EISA at the National

Members of the Eastern Irish Setter Association

seemed to be helping everywhere at the 2015 ISCA National Dog Show in Marietta, Georgia. You might

have seen members working at the reception table,

setting up the show site, helping with clean-up, giv-ing announcements, working agility and obedience

rings, stewarding, photographing and helping wher-ever needed.

Ann Marie Kubacz, Karolynne McAteer and Debra Hamilton took charge of tent placement, and Anne

Marie organized the RV/Box Truck parking. Anne Marie worked the Health Clinic along with Sue

Kwiatkowski and Susan Sullivan. Meanwhile, Karo-lynne McAteer kept the show rings moving as she

served as a Ring Steward and general jack-of-all-trades. Fiona Geiser and Fran Sloughfy worked the

Welcome/Registration table, answering questions and handing out welcome bags. Throughout the

week Lynne Godshall organized and kept track of the stats for the Biathlon. In their spare time Lynne

Godshall, Sue Kwiatkowski and Alex Van Meter

worked and helped setting up the agility and obedi-ence rings. Susan Sullivan frantically took pictures

for the memo collage and handed out trophies at the Awards Celebration. EISA members were every-

where working and thoroughly enjoying the Na-tional.
