The Compañía Cubana de Teléfonos Building was completed in 1927 and is located in the heart of Havana. The section-elevation composition (see cover image) was reconstructed from a small building section, photographs of the building, and a site visit. The wall section is a suggestion of the building’s construction based on historic construction photographs and typical 1920’s structures. A study of the building’s design and construction was completed with a focus on passive cooling.

The objective of this project is to create a sustainably designed neighborhood center near the Compañía Cubana de Teléfonos Building; it is a passive energy, mixed-use market building. There is a vertical transect zone shift from the commercial market center on the ground floor to urban residential types on the second floor. On the top floor, there is another shift to a more rural residential type and community garden, a reminder of the building’s active market and the supplying farmlands located just outside the city.

A master plan for a site in Bath, England was devised with a focus on mixed-use buildings in a walkable neighborhood setting. Individual students designed terrace houses within the master plan, focusing on floorplans that could be easily converted between single-family and multi-family use. The studio collectively completed the final compilation drawings and individuals designed the civic structures on the site (see market cross on projects page). The proposal was then presented to various community groups in Bath.

An ideal, hypothetical urban design assignment completed during the Rome study abroad semester, this project is a self-sustaining English market town and its region. A focus was placed on incorporating European urban design elements, creating spatial places, and having a variety of transect zones and building types. The project also emphasized walkability and neighborhood centers and explored the relationship of the market town to the agricultural hamlets.
