God’s Word for Today: “Why did Jesus need to be baptized? I thought baptism was for sinners?” It seems strange that our Savior, who was perfectly sinless, would need to be baptized, and yet he was. Why? Because Jesus had come to be our perfect Savior, and he is revealed as such in his baptism. God laid on him the sin of the world (John 1:29). Even from birth he endured the effects of our sin. Though Jesus wasn’t a sinner himself, he was carrying our sin, pain and sorrow (Isaiah 53:4), making him seem an unlikely Savior. But by taking our sin and suffering on himself, Jesus actually became our unlikely, yet perfect Savior (Hebrews 2:10; 5:7-9).
Holy Communion
“Personal Preparation for Holy Communion” is on page 156 of the Christian Worship Lutheran Hymnal.
The Bible and Lutherans teach that Holy Communion is a holy act instituted by Christ. Together with bread and wine we receive Jesus’ true body and blood. In this special meal Jesus gives the forgiveness of sins, strengthens our faith, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe.
The Holy Spirit uses the Lord's Supper the same way he uses the Word of God to maintain and strengthen our faith in Christ.

Installation of Pastor Nathan Fager at St. Paul’s, Stevensville:You and your congregation are invited to the installation service of Pastor Nathan Fager on Sunday, January 13 at 4:00 PM. We thank the Lord for this addition to our pastoral team at St. Paul’s and hope that you will join us in our thanks and welcoming of Nate and his family (wife Jenny and sons Camden and Levi). Following our worship service, a meal will follow in the gymnasium. All called workers are invited to an afterglow following the meal at the parsonage located across the school parking lot.

Sermon Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
JESUS IS DECLARED TO BE THE PROMISED MESSIAH
1) John bears witness of him (vv. 15–17)
As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ. (Lk 3:15)
Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism a brood of vipers (Mt 3:7)

His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. (Lk 3:17)
Professor Wendland; “His judgment would be thorough. His judgment was already in progress. It would become public and final on the Last Day when he ‘would gather the wheat into his barn,’ and ‘burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’ Believers would enter eternal life in heaven. Unbelievers would suffer the punishment of hell. This punishment would be eternal. The fire is ‘unquenchable,’ never-ending.”13 Tax Collectors collect no more than you are authorized to do. 14 Soldiers … do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages. 2) The Holy Spirit anoints him (v. 21-22a)
Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, 22a and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove. (Lk 3:21-22a)
Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. (Is 42:1)
I myself [John] did not know Jesus, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ (Jn 1:33)
3) The Father approves him (v. 22b)
