Fifth Sunday of ordinary times Catholic Family Sharing Appeal, the annual collection taken by the Diocese of Sioux Falls, is a resource that depends directly on our generosity. Many of you have already seen the page in the Bishop’s Bulletin detailing the amount asked of each parish. St. Leo’s goal is $28,000 and St. Vincent’s goal is $8,000 for 2018. This year the video message from Bishop Swain features several individuals and ministries funded in part each year by CFSA.

Much of my own ministry in the diocese has been funded by CFSA. I spent my first two years in the diocese as director of the Youth Office. A few years after that I was sent to SDSU for a degree in counseling which I used in Catholic Family Services as a part-time therapist. I have been the director of campus ministry at both SDSU and USD, and have benefited from the support of the Marriage Tribunal, Marriage Preparation Programs and now in Prison Ministry in Springfield. Our parishes have received much support from the Youth Office, Safe Environment Office, administrative support, and great youth programs like Totus Tuus and Discipleship Camps. Our diocese does an outstanding job of carefully using the monetary gifts we all contribute to these and many more ministries. Sunday TV Mass and so much outreach to the homebound, the homeless and needy, and many more ministries depend on CFSA. As with so many effective programs, we do not notice the impact of CFSA, but it is there every day in so many ways.

I strongly urge you to join me in supporting the CFSA this year. If you cannot contribute financially, please offer prayers for the many ministries supported by the appeal. We are indeed stronger together.

Lenten regulations for Catholics These are the MINIMUM for Lent. All are encouraged to thoughtfully consider going beyond these minimum regulations.

The Christian faithful are to do penance through prayer and fasting, abstinence and by exercising works of piety and charity. All Fridays through the year, especially during Lent, are penitential days.

Abstinence: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent.

Fasting: All those who are 18 or older, until their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s need; but together, they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be affected seriously. People in doubt about fast or abstinence should consult a priest.

CFSA 2018 Today we begin the Catholic Family Sharing Appeal 2018. Catholic Family Sharing Appeal challenges us each year to think beyond our walls and our individual needs. At some time in your life, you or someone you love will be served in one way or another from the ministries supported by Catholic Family Sharing Appeal. Your gift helps each of the diocesan ministries reach out to thousands, including training our future priests, a respect for life, education in our faith and ministry to the homebound, helping hurting marriages and more. This week you will receive a letter from Bishop Swain asking for your support for this year’s Catholic Family Sharing Appeal. Please prayerfully consider a gift to this year’s appeal, fill out your pledge card and bring it to church next weekend. If you do not receive a letter, let the parish office know. Our 2018 parish goal for St. Leo’s is $28,000 and for St. Vincent’s $8,000. I am confident we will exceed this goal, but we need the help of everyone. Remember any amount raised above our share stays in this parish. Thank you for being a part of Catholic Family Sharing Appeal 2018.

Prayer Chain St. Leo’s Catholic Church has an active prayer chain. If you have any prayer requests that we may pray for, please contact Anna Mae Zimmerman at 589-3841 or Mary Hajek at 589-3115. They will start the prayer chain in motion.

palm Collection in Progress Parishioners are once again asked to bring the blessed palms from their homes and place them in the baskets in the churches entries. These palms will be burned and the ashes used for distribution on Ash Wednesday. Used palms should be disposed of by burning separately or burying. They should NOT be thrown into the garbage or trash. Please bring your palms by February 11. Ash Wednesday is February 14.

Easter Cantata Practice for the 2018 Bon Homme Community Easter Cantata is on Sunday, February 4th at the First Baptist Church in Avon at 2:00pm. This year’s Cantata will be directed by Autumn Schultz. Past participants and new singers are welcome to join us!

What Should I Give Up for Lent? Lent is the perfect time to form new life-giving habits and abandon old self-destructive habits. But most of us just give up chocolate. Then, when Easter arrives, we realize we really haven’t grown spiritually since the beginning of Lent. Giving things up can help us to have a meaningful Lent, but that’s not what Lent is really all about. Lent is about doing something—something bold to become a better husband or wife, father or mother, son or daughter, friend, neighbor, etc. What if this year you did more than just give up something during Lent? Do something life-changing. Sign up for Dynamic Catholic’s Best Lent Ever.

ENCOUNTER LENT Join our faith community and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s CRS Rice

Bowl from entrances of the churches today and don’t forget to download the CRS Rice Bowl app! During the 40 days of Lent, as companions on the journey, we will encounter our neighbor.
