A Celebratory Peal

The bell in the cupola at St. John’s College’s McDowellHall has been keeping time andringing for more than a century.Providing a cheerful andconstant presence to students -––ringing 10 minutes beforeclass begins, at the beginning ofclass, and at the end of class—the historic bell also plays animportant role in a rite ofpassage for St. John’s seniors.

Every February, seniors turn inan annual essay in which theyexplore their own questionsraised by the texts they havebeen discussing in seminar.Culminating in months of hardwork, this year’s seniors willturn in their completed essaysbefore midnight on February 1to Chris Nelson, president, St. John’s, Annapolis.Afterward, they climb thenarrow stairs in the cupolaroom of McDowell Hall wherethey press a red button to ringthe bell. In the past, each seniorrang the bell once for everypage of their essay. Nowadaysthey celebrate the milestonewith a single celebratory peal. After ringing the bell, theseniors descend the bell towerwhere they are greeted by joyfulcheers from their classmates, congratulating them onaccomplishing the crowningessay of their St. John’s career.

Sarah Morse shares insights onlife as admissions director at St. John’s College with juniorEunji Kim. Morse worked at twoindependent schools in the Mid-Atlantic region—St. Timothy’sSchool and Jemicy School—before becoming admissionsdirector at the Annapoliscampus.

How do students typically hearabout St. John’s?Prospective students hear aboutthe college in a variety of ways, but the most common isthrough word of mouth. Currentstudents, alumni, and friends ofthe college are our mostvaluable asset when it comes torecruiting students. Currentstudents visit their high schoolsover college breaks; alumnispread the word and put us incontact with students they feelwould be well-suited to theProgram. In addition, we reachout to many thousands of highschool juniors and seniors viaelectronic and paper mail, engage with students at collegefairs, and network with collegecounselors and other educatorswhen on the road for the

college. We reach out to olderstudents as well, includingveterans. We want as manypeople as possible to knowabout St. John’s. The St. John’sGraduate Institute (GI) offers aMaster of Liberal Arts (MALA)program for students of all ageswho hold bachelor’s degrees.

St. John’s encourages campusvisits to prospective students andtheir families. Why is a campusvisit important?Whether a prospective studentcomes for a day or an overnightvisit, there’s nothing morehelpful than connecting withcurrent students and faculty toget a feeling for the Programand college community. Thisexperience can be key indetermining if St. John’s is theright fit.

It’s very important that anapplicant understand theProgram and the community atSt. John’s if they are to make agood decision about theireducation and do well at thecollege. In addition to campusvisits, our application processhelps us assess theirunderstanding. Essays are readvery carefully; they demonstratea great deal about theapplicant’s abilities and interestsand can show us how well he or

she understands the Programand community at the college.

How does being located inAnnapolis benefit students? One of the things that strikesme about Annapolis is that wehave four distinct and strongcultural groups: Johnnies,Midshipmen, legislators, andsailors. If you’re a Johnnie andgo into town to get out of “thebubble,” you may findyourself surrounded by peoplein the government, next to aMidshipman, or in the midstof people interested in sailing. This provides more variety tothe experience of living inAnnapolis than you wouldtypically find in a town thissize. And it is a huge benefit tobe able to walk into abeautiful, friendly coastal townwith very little effort. Last, we

have the benefit of having twomajor cities within 30 miles, which increases cultural andinternship opportunities forstudents at the college.

What qualities make a studenta good fit for St. John’s?There’s a tremendous varietyin the kinds of students whocome to St. John’s. What theytend to have in common, however, is a deep curiosity, apassion for learning, and alove of books and ideas.Students who come to St. John’s are willing toattempt things that they maynot be good at doing, whichtakes a particular type ofcourage and intellectualmaturity. On another note, Ihave also noticed that manystudents at the college have awonderful sense of humor!
