REFUGEE SETTLEMENT IN ADAMS COUNTY

Christ Lutheran and St. James continue to work together in welcoming and helping to settle new

Burmese families from Myanmar. THE CIN FAMILY recently arrived through Catholic Charities and now lives on East Middle Street. This family includes four children, plus a mother and a father. They are here because they openly practiced their Christian faith and became targets by certain powerful entities in the country. On Sunday, June 12, when we have invited the Rev. Paul Erbes, from Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services to preach at our Sunday worship services and conduct a Sunday morning forum on refugee immigration and resettlement, we will invite donations for the Cin Family. Hoss's Youth Fundraiser Wednesday, June 29th

Time to dine at Hoss's again for another fun fundraiser for our

youth groups! Please join us on Wednesday, June 29th anytime during

the day or evening (or both) and Hoss's will donate 20% of the sales

to our Workcamp Fund. It’s become a quarterly tradition that St.

James fills the restaurant and we have high enough sales to earn the

25% donation! Please grab a little green card from the youth

bulletin board or print this announcement and bring it to Hoss's. Dear Friend of St. James Lutheran Youth Group: Group #37643 We are excited to team up with Hoss's Steak and Sea House to raise money for a very worthy cause. Please

consider visiting the Hoss's location(s) listed below on 6/29/2016 to aid us in raising money to benefit St.

James Lutheran Youth Group. Print this announcement and present it on 6/29/2016 at Hoss's in Gettysburg.

Hoss's will then donate 20%* or 25%** of your total check paid to St. James Lutheran Youth Group. DISTRIBUTING INVITATIONS ON HOSS’S PROPERTY IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED AND WILL DISQUALIFY

OUR ORGANIZATION! Thank you for your cooperation!

Registration will be located immediately past the entrance. A continental breakfast and

lunch will be provided free to attendees. Join us for a free, day-long health summit

designed for health and human service professionals, community leaders, and interested

members of our Adams County communities. This year’s summit is dedicated to addressing

affordable housing in Adams County and will feature two keynote addresses, a panel of

presenters sharing housing models for specific populations followed by a workgroup

session of your choice to discuss potential housing models for Adams County. If you have

questions, please contact Jennifer Gastley at 337-4137 or [email protected].

beginning SUNDAY, JULY 3. Simply come

to the Music Room at 10:20 am and join us

in singing for the 10:45 am service. All ages

Creation Care Follow-up

“Ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you . . .” Job 12:8a Thanks for all of you who added leaves to our tree! Instead of dumping all these ideas on you at once, we'd like to give you a few ideas at a time. Pick one this month and work to make that action a habit; next month we'll have more and you will have a chance to develop a second habit. Habit forming takes attention and practice, so be patient as you attempt a small change each month.

LESSONS OF THE LEAVES:

- Compost

- Recycle; don't litter

- Turn off the lights

- Use only as much water as you need

- Capture runoff rainwater (for information on rain barrels, go to http://extension.psu.edu/plants/gardening/eco-friendly/rain-barrels) Since a few leaves mention “eat less meat,” we'll also provide a meatless recipe each month; this month's is inexpensive and quick to fix. Eating less meat can be both easy and nutritious, as well as treading more softly on the environment. Raising animals for food takes a lot of energy and a lot of water. Raising cattle, sheep and other ruminants also releases a lot of methane to the atmosphere and methane is a green house gas.

INDIAN CHICKPEA CURRY If you use canned chick-peas, this is a snap to prepare. Makes 6 servings.

1 tbsp. curry powder 1 tbsp. minced garlic

1 cup chopped red or green peppers 2-3 tbsp. cooking oil

2 cans chickpeas (15-19 oz. each) 1 tsp. salt

4 tbsp. chopped fresh coriander or parsley

Sauté curry powder, garlic, and red or green pepper in oil. Add chick-peas and salt, stir, and heat through. Simmer for 5 minutes. Serve sprinkled with coriander or parsley.

Hints: Serve with/over Basmati rice. After emptying pan of cooked mixture, add 2 Tabs. or so of water, heating and scraping the “leavings” free of the pan. Then pour over chick-pea mixture just before serving.

ALL SAINT CONFIRMATION CAMP June 12-17, 2016

This will be our second year that we have had members of our Confirmation class attend

the All Saint Confirmation Camp, held at Camp Nawakwa from June 12-17. Those attending

from St. James this year are: Lily Crowner, Natasha Hurwitch and Natalie Kloster.

Both Pastor Mike and Pastor Andrew are on the teaching staff for the week and will be

involved in this exciting time of learning, making new friends and lots of fun!

Update on Youth Minister Hiring Process

The process for hiring a Youth Minister continues under the supervision of the

Personnel Committee. Twenty-six applications were received by the May 9 cutoff

date. From these applications, four were chosen to invite in for interviews. If

any of those individuals were to be invited back for a second interview, then

members of the Youth Committee and several of our youth will also be involved in

these second interviews. We ask for your continued prayers during this process.

May 18, 2016 Council Report Submitted by Bill Shoemaker, Council Secretary

Brad Smith, Property Committee Chair, met with Council to discuss the play yard adjacent to the

church. Problems with drainage, roots obstructing safe play, and effective grass growth are

continuing issues. Child Care has money for a circular sidewalk around the play yard. Brad and the

Council came together with a plan to make improvements this summer including necessary drainage,

sidewalk, and grass replanting. The project will prevent use of the play yard for the summer.

Stewardship Committee will be sending a draft of the Mission Plan to other committees for input.

The goal is to have a final Mission Plan ready when considering the 2017 budget.

Council approved a recommendation from the Strategic Planning Committee to contract with Holy Cow Consulting. The cost is reasonable (about $1,000) for a renewal plan of shorter duration than a

traditional 5-10 year strategic plan. If pleased with the process and result when completed, the

process could be continued to extend beyond the two-year renewal plan.

Following the Council election, there were still 2, two-year vacant positions. Ron Couchman

volunteered to serve one of the positions. Council approved. Another two-year Council seat is still

available.

Applications for Youth Minister have been received and paper screened by the Personnel Committee.

Arrangements are currently being made to interview several of the candidates. Finalists will be

brought before Youth Ministry Committee representatives and selected youth.

Council approved another Hoss’s fundraiser to support our youth on Wednesday, June 29.

Children & Youth MinistryLean On Me!

We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us! Hebrews 12:1

Thank You! In a typical month, not counting special events, members of St. James Church put about 350 volunteer hours into children and youth ministry! (That does not include the 320 hours or more that paid staff contribute to children and youth programs each month.) Adding in retreats, service projects, lock-ins, Workcamp, National Youth Gathering, reading groups, VBS, committee meetings, synod events, fundraisers, training, and a myriad of other activities, the commitment to St. James’ children and youth is really quite remarkable. Volunteers range in age from teens to eighties! We simply couldn’t do all we do without you! As we wrap up this school year, we would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the MANY volunteers whose time, commitment and compassion make our ministries successful!

Thank you to all the children and youth who

took part in Youth Sunday! Thank you to everyone who joined in the celebration of their leadership and faith! They are a remarkable group and it is a pleasure to serve with them!

Vacation Bible School will take place June

20 to 24 at Christ Lutheran! The theme is “Surf Shack: Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing Love!” Youth and adult helpers are needed. Please speak with Kasey Smith or Julie Keyser if you’re interested. Registration forms are on the bulletin board outside the church office.

Fireman’s Carnival Clean Up

Youth attending Workcamp this summer, please sign up to help June 29 to July 3. Please see Janina Kloster or Sally Hoh!

Please eat at Hoss’s on Wednesday, June 29th to support youth mission trips. 20% of the proceeds will be returned to St. James! Take along one of the little green cards found on the Youth bulletin board outside the church office.

We’ll have a Lock-In for kids in K through 2nd grade on Saturday, June 4th beginning at 6 pm. The

Lock-In for kids in 3rd through 5th grade will

take place Saturday, June 11th starting at 6 pm. Bring a sleeping bag, pillow and snack to share. We’ll get up early enough on Sunday morning to attend the 8:15 am worship service. Friends are welcome! Please sign up so we have plenty of pizza for supper as well as breakfast foods.

Service Projects! Youth in Middle School/High

School are invited to help Reach set up for Workcamp in Gettysburg during the third week of June! (We’re waiting for a date from Reach staff.) The plan is to meet at the High School at 1 pm, work all afternoon and then host a pizza party at the Youth House for the Reach staff. Please stand by for more info!

We are also in the process of planning a get together with the new refugee family. Please check the youth bulletin board and our Facebook pages We<3 St James YG!! and St James Lutheran Church Gettysburg, PA for upcoming events!

The Youth Ministry Committee will meet on Wednesday, June 8th at 7 pm in the Youth House. Parents and youth are welcome!
