Outdoor spring cleaning tips(StatePoint) It’s time to prep your home’s outdoor spaces for the season ahead. From the yard to the garage to the deck, getting these areas tidy is all part of a thorough spring clean.

Here are some tips to make the pro-cess faster and easier.

De-Clutter your workspaceYour shed, your garage, your toolbox -- it’s time to take stock of what you’re storing in these key areas. Broken tools, piles of junk – these are items that will get in your way and slow you down all season long. So before you get to the nitty gritty of your outdoor spring clean, take the time to organize your work-space.

Throw out what is junk, donate what you aren’t using, and organize the rest into categories. Vertical storage can save crucial room, so install tall shelves and use walls and the ceiling to install organizational systems. Now is also a great opportunity to perform routine maintenance on your lawn equipment and tools to improve their efficiency.

Identify multitasking toolsCheck out innovations on old tools that can make your versatile workload easier. For example, you can upgrade your con-ventional pressure washer for a newer model with more diverse functionality. For example, Briggs & Stratton’s new POWERflow+ Pressure Washer technol-ogy has one pump with two separate cleaning modes -- high pressure and

high flow, which work for different tasks.Remember, different surfaces require

different cleaning techniques. Whether you’re cleaning up tough mold and mildew stains from your deck or patio or washing the more delicate surface of your car, you can switch modes or apply soap directly from the nozzle. This feature eliminates the need for switch-ing attachments or walking back to the pressure washer, making an afternoon of diverse to-dos manageable. Just be sure you’re using the proper mode for the task.

Do smart yard maintenanceIf you have a larger yard, consider a rid-ing mower to save time and energy on lawn maintenance. Remember not to over mow your lawn. Not only is it not healthy for the grass, it can be a time waster and increase your carbon foot-print needlessly. Likewise, only water your lawn and garden when necessary. During periods of rain, you can ease up on this chore. The most efficient time of day to water your lawn is morning. When the sun is strongest, you will lose more water to evaporation and your work will be for naught. By changing up your lawn care habits, you can save time all season.

While working outdoors can be fun, don’t spend more time than you need to on your household spring cleaning tasks. Finding simple ways to be more efficient will give you more time to enjoy your home’s outdoor spaces.

Get out & grow!by Kristina Gabalski

by Kristina Gabalski

There’s no lack of yard and garden work in the spring, especially following such a brutally cold and snowy winter. If you’re having a hard time prioritizing which job to take on first, here’s a list of ten helpful and important chores for getting the growing season off to a great start.

•Now is the time to prune and remove any dead or winter damaged branches on trees and shrubs. Prune dead wood from roses and cut back long canes once leaf buds begin to swell.

•Clear beds of debris which can harbor disease. Remove dead leaves and plant material. This will help with air circulation and clear the way for new growth. Push

any frost-heaved perennials or fall plant-ings back into the ground with your garden boot or clog.

•While you are tidying up, it’s never too early to pull weeds. They are already out there and it is easier to eradicate them when they are small and the soil is moist.

•If your lawn is a priority, you can fertil-ize and apply a pre-emergence herbicide.Timing for application of herbicides is important - if applied too early, crabgrass seeds that germinate late in the season will not be controlled. A good rule of thumb is to apply when forsythia blooms begin to drop, or when redbud trees are in full bloom as crabgrass seed typically germi-nates after these events. Be sure to care-fully read and follow all package instruc-

tions when applying herbicides.

•Now is a good time to build raised beds, while temperatures are cool and before it’s time to plant. Ground-level beds can also be dug, but make sure the soil has dried out.

•Stake early summer perennials which grow rapidly once temperatures begin to warm up. The moist soil also makes it easier to drive in supports.

•Divide perennials. This can be done when new growth appears. Divide clumps with a sharp knife, making sure each division has several shoots and roots. Replant imme-diately and keep well watered throughout the growing season.

•Start veggie and annual seeds indoors. Read seed packets carefully for germina-tion times to make sure the plants don’t become “leggy” before being transplanted into the garden.

•If you didn’t do it last fall, clean and sharpen garden tools and clean pots and containers. Purchase new tools if needed.

•Have some fun and plant colorful contain-ers of pansies or violas to brighten up your yard and entry. Pinch back dead blooms to keep the plants vigorous.

Celebrate Arbor Day April 24 -- plant a tree!National Arbor Day is Friday, April 24,

this year, and the Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for anyone to celebrate the annual tree-planting holiday. Join the Foundation in April and receive 10 free shade trees.

By joining the Foundation in April, new members receive the following trees: red oak, sugar maple, weeping willow, baldcy-press, thornless honeylocust, pin oak, river birch, tuliptree, silver maple, and red maple.

The free trees are part of the Founda-tion’s Trees for America campaign. “These trees provide shade in the summer and vibrant colors throughout the fall,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Through the simple act of planting trees, one person can make a difference in helping to create a healthier and more beautiful planet for all of us to enjoy.”

The trees will be shipped postpaid with enclosed planting instructions at the right

time for planting in April or May. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

To become a member of the Foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 con-tribution to Ten Free Shade Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by April 30 or visit arborday.org/april.

Get a fresh look outside(StatePoint) Giving your home’s exterior a fresh look starts with color. And this year, many home improvement trend-spotting experts say the leading color family is gray, with its neutral yet refined elegance.

“Gray is an important home exterior color because it works equally well on all home styles, from historic to contempo-rary, and in every part of the country,” says Kate Smith, president and chief color maven of Sensational Color. “Quite versa-tile, gray tones can range from cool, clear bluish gray to a true neutral gray through a warm French gray or even taupe. With gray, it’s really hard to go wrong.”

While you may know whether you like something once it is in place, achieving a look you love before making a commit-ment is crucial. Smith is offering tips for picking the perfect hues for your home:•The best gray for your home exterior is one that blends well with your roof and other fixed features, such as brick, stone or permanent design elements. For a middle tone that will work on most homes, look for a classic gray that will never go out of style.

•Light, clear gray is fresh and airy -- just be sure to look for any undertones. What appears as light gray on the swatch could seem light blue or lavender once applied.•If you’re going with dark gray as the main color, look for one that is rich but soft. Deeper shades with a harder edge are great as accents.•Gray comes alive with dramatic accent colors. Paint your door a bold color to cre-ate a strong focal point. Use other accent colors to play a secondary role.•A touch of brass, bronze or copper warms up gray; gold or orange adds a spark of color.•Both warm and cool greens look fresh against gray; from thyme to palm or forest, green naturally brings out the beauty of gray.•Tried and true blue -- soft raindrop, bold blue paisley or admiral blue -- keeps gray fresh and clean.•Go all neutral with gray on gray for a sophisticated scheme.•If you’re updating your roof, consider the 14 shades of gray offered as options for polymer slate and shake roofing tiles at

DaVinci Roofscapes. Their newest color, Smokey Gray, reflects a deep, rich black-ish gray reminiscent of real slate. Combined with softer gray roofing tones, such as Light Weathered Gray or Slate Gray, you can create a unique roofing profile.

For other ways to add gray to the exterior of the home, check out the insights from color expert Kate Smith at www.sensa-tionalcolor.com.

Make your yard wildlife-friendly(StatePoint) Being a good neighbor means more than being friendly to the humans across the street, it also means being friendly to the animals in your yard. Mak-ing your yard a safe place for local wildlife should be a top lawn care priority.

With that in mind, here are some tips for creating a healthy habitat for local critters.•Stock your garden with small native spe-cies of trees, shrubs and flowers to give wildlife needed nourishment, as well as cover from predators.

A source of water can also be a great resource for visiting fauna. Whether it’s a pond or a bird bath, be sure this zone is well-maintained so you don’t inadvertently create a haven for unwanted species. In the warmer months when mosquitoes are most active, you should change the bird bath water even more often.•A bird feeder in your backyard, full of

water and seeds, will be the perfect invita-tion for beautiful migrating and local birds to stop by.

Just be sure your property is safe for birds. Unfortunately, birds don’t see clear glass. As a result, millions of birds die every year by striking glass. Don’t let your sliding glass doors or other windows become a death trap for birds.

To protect birds, apply special decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight. For example, those from WindowAlert have the ap-pearance of frosted glass, but glow like a stoplight for birds, so you don’t have to compromise your own view out your window.

“Wildlife can beautify your garden and be a sign that your yard is healthy” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert. “But birds and other wildlife need food, shelter, and safety.”

Raise your house’s resale value with these improvements(StatePoint) Before you decide on a home improvement project, it’s a good idea to learn which ones will help raise your house’s value and recoup the most money when you decide to sell.

From replacing your front door to adding a deck, there are many mid-range improvements that won’t cost a bundle but will deliver great bang for your buck. It’s not about spending the most money; it’s about improvements that best hold their value.

The experts at “Remodeling” magazine recently released their 28th annual Cost vs. Value Report, com-paring construction costs with resale value for 36 of the most popular home improvement projects. When it came to midrange projects, the report found homeowners recouped the highest percentage of costs on these five improvements: steel entry door replacement, installation of manufac-tured stone veneer on home exteriors, garage door replacements, vinyl siding replacement, and wooden deck addi-tions.

“Making your home stand out from others on your block and others on the market is achievable if you plan wisely when it comes to remodeling projects,” says Phil Wengerd, Vice President of Market Strategies at ProVia, a leading building products manufacturer. “This year’s statistics indicate that moderate-ly priced exterior projects can signifi-

cantly enhance home resale values.”This year’s analysis of top midrange

home improvement projects provided definite direction for homeowners:

•Steel Entry Door Replacement: The 20-Gauge Steel Entry Door has con-sistently delivered the best return on investment for resale, holding the top

spot in the midrange product cat-egory since its debut in this report in 2009/2010. The steel entry door is the only project that, on a national basis, more than pays back its investment, typically recouping 101.8 percent. At ProVia, for example, the company’s Legacy Steel Entry Doors are a consis-tent top sales performer.

•Manufactured Stone Veneer: A new project on this year’s report is the installation of manufactured stone ve-neer on home exteriors. This category zoomed to the top of the midrange list, grabbing second place with a 92.2 percent cost-value return. Increased product demand for Heritage Stone is a reflection of this trend, observed by Wengerd and others.

•Garage Door Replacement: The instal-lation of new four-section garage doors on galvanized steel tracks proved to be a valuable project with homeowners recouping 88.4 percent of their costs.

•Vinyl Siding Replacement: Replacing a home’s vinyl siding was one of a hand-ful of projects that jumped up the list for recouping improvement costs. So not only can new vinyl siding beautify a home, it can keep it weatherproof and enhance its resale value.

•Deck Addition: Adding a wooden deck can do more than provide a place to enjoy the great outdoors. When it comes time to sell, you should be able to pocket more than 80 percent of the cost for this improvement.

Before you dip into your wallet, learn which home improvements will best hold their value while enhancing curb appeal.

Tree talk #16by Joe Reinschmidt

It has been a while since you’ve heard from me. Probably longer than I real-ize since being well over a hundred years old time seems to slip past me

My scribe tells me that many folks have expressed concern about my status and wonder where things stand. In human terms I think they call it status-quo. I’m still standing here as those of you who know me can plainly see when you pass by on Union Street. There appears to be a new sign out by the road but since I can’t see the front of it and couldn’t read it anyways it doesn’t matter much. Like most of you I’ve been through one of the worst winters in many years and at this point I’m assuming I have survived.

Statistics are not my strong point so I can’t say how extreme it was compared to many other winters. You’ve probably heard enough about that from the weather experts. I’m just waiting to see if my buds will burst forth but I have the feeling this is one year that process will test my patience.

As you may recall I was concerned that I couldn’t be of service for much of anything due to my immobility. It appears though that even with those limitations I have become a catcher of airborne plastic bags. Look closely at the picture and you will see several of them caught in the tips of my branches - at least for the moment. Others have been there and moved on after a big blast of wind.

I’m sure you are all starting your preparations for gardening as it should be.

Meanwhile I’ll just be standing here holding the bag(s). Happy Spring! The Sycamore

Note: Tree Talk began in 2010 with Joe Reinschmidt’s essay about a 100-plus year old Sycamore tree located in an open field on the east side of Route 259 across from Pineway Ponds Park in Spencerport.

Add design appeal to your home(StatePoint) You can add character and beauty to your home by learning more about your house’s architectural style and adding design elements to comple-ment the look.

“With the right knowledge, it’s easy to transform any room of your home as well as the exterior,” says Niki Decker, senior product and marketing manager with Fypon, which creates synthetic millwork products.

The experts at Fypon are offering some tips and guidelines to achieve an authentic, coordinated look through-out your home -- inside and out.•Proportions matter. If you’re going to be adding shutters to your exterior, do a bit of math. The width of shut-ters used in pairs on a window should be half the width of the window, and should be the same height as the window.•The higher the ceiling, the taller the baseboard should be. Additionally, the height of your baseboard moulding should always be larger than the cas-ing, which is the frame around a door or window.•Make a room feel taller by placing a chair rail -- the moulding used to pre-vent the backs of chairs from rubbing

against the wall -- one-third of the way up from the floor. Chair rails should be 1/2 or one inch narrower than casings.•If you have a classic Georgian style home, characterized by strict symme-try and a centered and paneled front door, cap the front door panel with an elaborate crown supported by decora-tive pillars.•Enhance your Victorian style home with ornamental spindlework on the porches and patterned shingles on the roof. Offset the complexity with simple surrounds for windows.•For country style cottages, consider clapboard shingles for siding, or wood shake for siding and roofing, and wide white trim or shutters around win-dows.•Complete the look and feel of your Mediterranean-style home, rich with such decorative accents as round columns, tile and stone, by planting lush gardens and installing an ornate fountain.•Maintain a traditional look with in-novative, updated building material that lasts longer and with less upkeep. For example, polyurethane pieces are a lightweight alternative to wood. The pieces are easy to install and resist

insects, moisture and weather condi-tions. Manufacturers like Fypon, which creates thousands of millwork pieces, offer products that come both textured and smooth. A new line of Classic Woodgrain decorative millwork offers a refined woodgrain texture suitable for staining or painting, and complements home styles such as Arts & Crafts and Mediterranean.

Download Fypon’s free Style Guide at www.fypon.com/literature/catalog.asp. Do a bit of research so you can complement your home’s architectural style authentically and with sophisti-cated flair.
