Soft Proofing Wildlife PhotographyAward-Winning Fine-Art Photographer Andy Biggs Adds BenQ’s PG2401PT Monitor to his Workflow

Andy Biggs is an elite wildlife photographer and educator. A recipient of the BBC “Wild Places” Wildlife Photographer of the Year award, his fine art photographs have been shown in prominent galleries, purchased for private collections, and commissioned by commercial clients around the world. A leader of photographic safaris, Biggs allows participants to gain a deeper understanding of photographic principles while experiencing the beauty and uniqueness of African wildlife firsthand. Completely self-taught, Biggs processes his own images from start to finish, making color faithfulness capabilities an extremely important factor for turning out his breathtaking photographs. Yet despite the many software and hardware tools at his disposal, the artist remains committed to maintaining a straightforward workflow by seeking solutions that combine simplicity with complete color integrity.

As digital photography moves from a hobby-based activity to more mainstream applications, the availability of cameras, monitors, and printing peripherals has greatly expanded within the marketplace. Consequently, both professional photographers and amateur practitioners face a wide variety of potential products at their disposal — resulting in an ambiguous decision-making process for artists looking to take on the entire photographic workflow from capture to print. process clear of complexities, Biggs was seeking a total solution which would allow him obtain onscreen colors that match both his photographic intentions and eventual image print. Also, any equipment included in Biggs’ workflow needed to be compatible with X-Rite profiling hardware, which is used across his different components.

Engineered to maintain color consistency from screen to print, BenQ’s PG2401PT professional color management monitor allows Biggs to add a high-performance soft-proofing component to his workflow without adding any complexity to the photo developing process. With Palette Master, a monitor-specific “Palette Master” calibration software which is powered by X-Rite, the Hardware Calibration function also gives Biggs complete control with his X-Rite calibrating hardware while the monitor’s Brightness Uniformity Function and 14-bit color processing ability ensures the ultimate faithfulness and clarity across the entire display and onto any photographic image. the PG2401PT monitor is also FograCert Softproof Monitor certified as well as GRACoL certified by the IDEAlliance, and includes a 10-bit panel feature to display more than one billion colors — ensuring onscreen color faithfulness before committing to a costly print.

“A major part of my process is ensuring that images look faithful on the screen, since printing photographs with the right color profiles on the first try saves both time and expenses,” said Biggs. “With BenQ’s PG2401PT monitor, all I had to do was plug-in the hardware, install the software, calibrate the monitor and begin editing my photographs. The monitor was fully cabled, up and running, and entirely profiled in less than forty five minutes, which is incredibly fast in the world of proofing monitors. With such reliable color integrity, I no longer have to print several different versions of a photograph to chase a genuine print. I get the right print the first time without adding any complexity to my workflow.”

By adding the BenQ PG2401PT monitor to his process, Biggs was able to maintain his simple workflow while adding clear color fidelity to his proofing process. The solution was also easily integrated with his X-Rite devices and operates seamlessly with the photographers’ Mac editing hardware. Used as a second monitor for proofing, Biggs will be using the monitor to ensure proper color depictions across his entire line of wildlife photos, including the artist-in-residence portfolio he recently completed for Banana Republic. He also plans to use the monitor while teaching photographic workshops and for his consulting work on building successful color profiles for paper companies.

“I consider this an important

development for digital photography

— the monitor is utilitarian, provides

amazing color quality, and to put it

quite simply: it just works.”

“BenQ’s new color management monitor solves a wide range of everyday problems, meaning I no longer need to worry about the technical aspects of my setup components. This frees up more time for me to concentrate on my photographs and the entire creative process,” added Biggs. “I consider this an important development for digital photography — the monitor is utilitarian, provides amazing color quality, and to put it quite simply: it just works.”
