HOW IT WORKS

Home control is not just affordable and easy to implement, but has now become a necessity to help reduce energy costs. From lighting

and appliance control to security and heating and cooling (HVAC) automation, our INSTEON technology allows you to create your own

perfect smart home.

Using radio frequency and your home’s existing electrical lines, INSTEON lets you automate without having to rewire your house.

BENEFITS OF A SMART HOME INCLUDE:

The IRLinc takes the signals from your universal remote and converts them into INSTEON signals. Those signals travel through to the wall switches. This solution gives you control over stereo, TV and other IR components as well as lighting from any other room in the house. Turn the volume up or change a radio station and dim the lights. Replace an existing switch with a KeypadLinc and be able to turn the lights off in addition to the TV or other A/V gear. This works well for the master bedroom. When leaving your room, hit a button that turns off the bedside lamp, ceiling light and TV or stereo.

Whole home theater control system. Turn on lights, A/V gear and open or close drapes all with your iPhone or web-enabled device.

Choose between two equally simple motion-activated devices: TriggerLinc which mounts to any door or window or Motion Sensor which mounts on a wall. Either one can be set to turn on a light when activated and turn it off when the door or window closes or motion has stopped being sensed.

This system allows you to know that your garage door is closed or if it’s been left open, close it, from a KeypadLinc in your house.

Replace an existing wall switch with the KeypadLinc, set up your I/O Linc Garage Door Control & Status Kit and link one button on the KeypadLinc to the I/O Linc. Now when the garage door opens, the LED on that button will light up. Press the button to close the garage. This screen shot shows the Event view. From here you can drag and drop conditions or triggers such as Time, Day, Device State and even X10 (for those with older automation systems). In the Action field you can drag and drop devices you wish to control based on the above criteria.

This PC automation software can be used to turn any INSTEON-compatible device on or off or dim it to a desired level, if possible. You can also set timer-based events, scheduling lights to turn on at dusk and off at bedtime on specific days, even triggering lights to turn on at the same time every day or randomized for security purposes. You can also use this software to trigger events based on your geographic location. After entering your location and time zone (by nearest major city), you can schedule your outdoor lights to turn on automatically at dusk and off at daybreak.

HouseLinc 2 has the ability to synchronize your INSTEON network to find all of the devices in your home that are linked to one another. This is a convenient maintenance function, which will allow the discovery of unknown devices and links. Once one INSTEON-compatible device has been linked, the software goes through the database of each device it is linked to and adds it to HouseLinc 2 for easy setup and management.

It is important to note that the software communicates to your INSTEON devices via a computer interface that plugs into a wall outlet. This interface needs to be connected and your computer in order for HouseLinc 2 to function. There are two versions available:

Wisconsin Resident Uses Sensaphone to Protect Home During Harsh Winter MonthsLiving in a remote location has advantages: few solicitors find their way to the front porch; neighborhood traffic is minimal; and the peace and quiet can be very good for the soul. Many people would agree that these are good things; for example, take Ronald Pierner, a resident of northern Wisconsin, lives on the edge of a national forest not far from Lake Superior. His dirt driveway stretches eight miles from the main road. The trek to pick up the mail is brutal. But the peace and quiet, ah.

Then there is the weather. Winter in northern Wisconsin means snow and lots of it, which is why Pierner spends the winter months somewhere much warmer. But being away from his home means he is unable to watch over its contents without help. “If I wanted to pay for an expensive security company, I wouldn’t be able to find one anyway,” Pierner said. “I just don’t have many choices.”

Instead, Pierner settled on Sensaphone, a remote monitoring system. The Sensaphone is designed specifically for use in vacation homes, cabins, and small businesses, for monitoring for power failures, temperature, and sound of audible alarms like smoke detectors. Pierner uses it to monitor loss of power in his home. Loss of power in northern Wisconsin means loss of heat, which could quickly turn into frozen pipes and broken water mains. “I’ve got boilers with in-floor heating and I need power to run the pumps to pump the hot water through the house,” he said. “I need to run the boiler and, without power, I’m in trouble. While monitoring the temperature helps, the power is a better indicator. Even with a backup generator, I only have a certain amount of time to figure out what the problem is and address it.”

From early December to April, Pierner relies on the Sensaphone to alert him and his friends, who watch his property while he is away. He enlists a group of friends, including one who works in the law enforcement industry, to respond when appropriate. “It calls up to four numbers, including my house in Florida, as well as my plumber and heating guy,” Pierner said. “It will call the first number and say there is a power outage. If it doesn’t get an answer or someone doesn’t press the code, it keeps calling the others on the list and circles back until someone does answer.”

Pierner said he first discovered Sensaphone remote monitors after buying a vacation home on Padre Island in Texas. “We traveled a lot at the time and having someone check on your house once in a while is just not good enough. I needed something that worked all the time.” A timely discussion with an employee of the local telephone company alerted him to Sensaphone. “He said he had a device that might work. The price was right for what I needed and compared to what a security firm would cost or the damage that could be done, it was an easy decision.”

“As long as I have a situation where I am away from something that has to be watched, I will use it,” he said. “When my home in Wisconsin was brand new, I had the option of putting in an expensive security system or installing a Sensaphone, which performed the same basic functions and was much easier to maintain. Even with such a sophisticated security system option, I’ll still use the Sensaphone system.”

LENSLenses with wider angles (lower mm) will capture a larger area of images, ideal for a full front or backyard view. For a more accurate image capture, such as of business visitors or vehicle license plates, use a camera with a narrow (higher mm) lens that can capture detail from a smaller area.

RESOLUTIONThe higher the number, the better the picture will be. Network cameras refer to display dimensions (the higher the number, the better the image).

ILLUMINATION & LEDSA camera's light sensitivity rating is measured in Lux. 1 Lux is the amount of light from a candle measured from 1 meter away. The lower the Lux rating, the less light a camera needs to capture clear images. For little or no light areas, select a camera with the lowest possible Lux rating. Some color cameras switch automatically to black & white at night for clearer images, and many cameras have built-in IR illuminators that allow image capturing in total darkness.

WIREDWired Cameras can be more reliable, provide a better picture, and cost less than comparable wireless models, but they do require wiring.

WIRELESSWireless Cameras are a great option when it is not practical to run a cable between the camera and the monitor, TV or recording device. The camera transmits images over radio frequency to a receiver that outputs the picture to a computer, monitor or recording device. Note: most of the wireless models will need to be plugged into electricity near the camera’s mounting location.

IMAGE SENSORThis device converts light into electrical signals, much like a microphone converts sound into electrical signals. Budget models use CMOS imagers, and higher-end models use superior CCD image sensors. Within CCD image sensors, a larger image sensor translates to a better picture.

MULTI-ROOM SOLUTION

When you have A/V distribution set up to distribute your audio and video to multiple rooms from one central location, you’ll need the ability to control the A/V components from each viewing room.

The Harmony 890, again, gives the user an RF solution in which the remote can be taken from room to room and be used to communicate with the A/V components.

With the wired solutions, you’ll need an IR sensor in every room that needs the capability to control the A/V components. In this application, you’ll want to select the IR sensor based on what type of television will be in the room, run a 3 conductor wire from each room to all your components, and then connect all the IR sensor cables to the IR Ready 4 Emitter Kit.

Wireless redistribution of IR signals is possible through a variety of options. These solutions are typically designed for the customer that doesn’t have more than 2-3 components or have the ability to run a wire from the IR repeater to the components.

The Internal RF Adapter uses a transmitter battery which replaces one of your remote’s AA(A) batteries and converts the IR signal from the remote into an RF signal. The RF receiver then grabs that RF signal and turns it back into an IR signal to control your components.

The Powermid Set consists of a transmitter Powermid and a receiver Powermid. The transmitter receives an IR signal from your remote and transmits it as an RF signal. The receiver sees the RF signal and then turns is back into an IR signal to control your components.

The Harmony 890 is the RF solution for those who have more than 2-3 components and want to combine all their remotes into one universal remote. The remote control sends both IR and RF signals simultaneously.
