In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen.

Sisters and brothers, I have good news: In love, God predestined us. In love, God

chose us before creation to be part of this divine love story between God and GodsCreation. In love, God predestined us. This is not only good news, but its critical newsfor us as Christians. Its critical because its the very thing that allows us to proclaim andtrust that, regardless of what we have done, or what we have left undone, God loves us.

In love, God predestined us. This sounds like a fairly positive and affirmingstatement of good news, but for many of us, predestination is a difficult topic. If you find itdifficult, you are in good company, because theologians have debated the doctrine ofpredestination for centuries, and it remains a point of contention between church andsociety today.

Before I go further, let me admit that this is not a word we work with every day,and let me recognize that a working definition of the term predestination might be inorder. Predestination is the idea that God has already determined all of human historyaccording to Gods eternal plan.

Its a difficult topic, because it questions our sacred free will and autonomy indetermining our lifes path. Its difficult because, while we believe in Gods love for us asChristians, we might be left wondering what happens to the rest of humanity. Its difficult

because, while Christ lived and died for all people, it seems as if some might not bedestined to hear the good news. Its difficult because, while it assures us of Gods eternallove, we might wonder then about the point of the churchs mission.

Predestination has been, and continues to be, a point of contention between thechurch and society, but mostly because its been profoundly misunderstood...and not bysociety in general as we might thinkbut rather by the churchby Christiansby us.

While I dont have any profound answers to give you in response to questions aboutpredestination, or provocative ways to explain this difficult topic, there are twomisunderstandings that I believe are crucial to clear up.

First, in order to clear up the biggest misunderstanding that Christians have aboutpredestination, let me say this: There is no indication in Ephesians, or anywhere else in theBible, that our lives are actually predeterminedthat God has somehow programmed ourlives and we are to live like robots, simply playing out a script. Rather, Scripture is anaccount of how God invites us into a living relationship with unexpected twists and turns.Scripture is an account of how God has joined us throughout human historyguiding usand leading usalong our journey as we live with the consequences of our actions.

Second, in order to clear up the biggest misunderstanding that non-Christians haveabout predestination, let me say this: There is no indication that predestination defines the

extent of Gods grace. Gods grace is abundant and endless and goes beyond our wildestimaginations. What I am about to say is probably the main sticking point between theChristian faith, other religions, and secular society: there is no reason to think that we havebeen authorized to determine who is inand who is out. This is not our jobits Godsjob. I dont know why, in conversations about predestination, we always seem to hint atour place in making these decisions.

So, if predestination does not indicate that our lives are divinely scripted, and doesnot indicate that we are responsible for determining who receives Gods love and grace,then what is it? Why is predestination critical to proclaiming and trusting that, regardlessof what we have done or left undone, God loves us?

At the heart of the matter, predestination is one way for us to joyously affirm Godsgrace given to Gods people however God might choose. Predestination is aboutrecognizing that God extended grace to us through Christ. At its heart, predestination haslittle to with usand everything to do with God. Its God who, through Christ, predestinedus. Its God who, in love, chose us to participate in this divine love story.

Thats all fine and good, but you might be wondering, What does this mean for ustoday? How does this help us to live out our faith and continue on our faith journey?

Sisters and brothers, we are free. We are free to live our lives how we believe weshould, knowing that from the very beginning, God claimed us. We are bound to live ourlives out of response to Gods love and grace.

We are free. We are free to respond to Gods love for us however we can. We arefree to serve God, not out of obligation or predetermination, but because as we do so, welive out Gods grace and love for us.

We are free. We are free yet bound to love one another and everyone around us. Weare free to love, not so that people might somehow receive Gods grace through usbutrather because that is our job...our callingour vocation as Christians. We are free to loveone another and everyone around us because, from the very beginning, God claimed us.

In love, God predestined us. In love, God chose us before creation to participatefreely in this divine love story between God and Creation. And out of that love, we aremade free. Amen.

Hermanas y hermanos, tengo una buena noticia: En el amor, Dios nos predestin. En elamor, Dios nos escogi antes de la creacin para formar parte de esta historia de amordivino entre Dios y la Creacin de Dios. En el amor, Dios nos predestin. Esto no es slouna buena noticia, pero es una noticia importante para nosotros como cristianos. Es muyimportante porque es la misma cosa que nos permite proclamar y confiar en que,independientemente de lo que hemos hecho, o lo que hemos dejado de hacer, Dios nosama.

En el amor, Dios nos predestin. Esto suena como una declaracin bastante positiva yafirmativa de la buena noticia, pero para muchos de nosotros, la predestinacin es un temadifcil. Si le resulta difcil, usted est en buena compaa, ya que los telogos han debatido

acerca de la doctrina de la predestinacin desde hace siglos, y sigue siendo un punto decontencin entre la Iglesia y la sociedad de hoy.Antes de seguir adelante, permtanme reconocer que esto no es una palabra que la quetrabajamos todos los das, y permtanme reconocer que una definicin de trabajo de lapalabra "predestinacin" podra estar en orden. La predestinacin es la idea de que Dios yaha determinado toda la historia humana de acuerdo el designio eterno de Dios.

Es un tema difcil, porque cuestiona nuestra sagrada voluntad libre y la autonoma en ladeterminacin de camino de nuestra vida. Es difcil porque, aunque nosotros creemos en elamor de Dios nosotros como cristianos, podemos haber dejado de preguntarnos quocurre con el resto de la humanidad. Es difcil porque, mientras que Cristo vivi y muri

por toda la gente, parece como si algunos de ellos podran no estar destinados a escucharlas buenas nuevas. Es difcil porque, aunque nos asegura el amor eterno de Dios,podramos preguntarnos entonces sobre el punto de misin de la iglesia.

La predestinacin ha sido, y sigue siendo, un punto de contencin entre la iglesia y lasociedad, pero sobre todo porque ha sido mal entendida profundamente ... y no por la

sociedad en general, como podramos pensar ... sino ms bien por la iglesia ... por loscristianos ... por nosotros.

Si bien no tengo ninguna respuesta profunda para responder a las preguntas acerca de lapredestinacin, o maneras provocativas para explicar este tema tan difcil, hay dosmalentendidos que creo que son cruciales para aclarar.

En primer lugar, con el fin de aclarar el malentendido ms grande que los cristianos tienenacerca de la predestinacin, permtanme decir lo siguiente: No hay ninguna indicacin enEfesios, o en cualquier otro lugar en la Biblia, que nuestras vidas estn predeterminadas...que Dios de alguna manera ha programado nuestras vidas y hemos de vivir como robots,

simplemente jugar un guin. Ms bien, la Escritura es un relato de cmo Dios nos invita aentrar en una relacin viva con vueltas y giros inesperados. La Escritura es un relato decmo Dios nos ha unido a travs de la historia humana... que nos gua y nos lleva... a lolargo de nuestro camino como el que vivimos con las consecuencias de nuestras acciones.

En segundo lugar, con el fin de aclarar el malentendido ms grande que los no cristianostienen acerca de la predestinacin, permtanme decir lo siguiente: No hay indicios de que lapredestinacin define el alcance de la gracia de Dios. La gracia de Dios es abundante einterminable, y va ms all de nuestras imaginaciones ms salvajes. Lo que voy a decir esprobablemente el principal punto de conflicto entre la fe cristiana, otras religiones, y lasociedad secular: no hay razn para pensar que se nos ha autorizado para determinar quin

est dentro... y quin est fuera. Este no es nuestro trabajo... es trabajo de Dios. No s porqu, en las conversaciones acerca de la predestinacin, que siempre parecemos haceralusin en nuestro lugar en la toma de estas decisiones.As pues, si la predestinacin no indica que nuestras vidas son divinamente guiadas, y noindica que somos responsables de determinar quin recibe el amor y la gracia de Dios,entonces qu es? Por qu es importante a la proclamacin de la predestinacin yconfiando en que, independientemente de lo que hemos hecho o dejado de hacer, Dios nosama?

En el meollo de la cuestin, la predestinacin es una manera de afirmar con alegra lagracia de Dios dada al pueblo de Dios pero Dios puede elegir. La predestinacin es

reconocer que gracia de Dios extendida a travs de Cristo. En el fondo, la predestinacintiene poco que ver con nosotros... y todo que ver con Dios. Es Dios quien, por medio deCristo, nos predestin. Es Dios quien, en el amor, nos eligi para participar en esta historiade amor divino. Todo eso est muy bien, pero es posible que te preguntes: "Qu significaesto para nosotros hoy? Cmo nos ayuda esto a vivir nuestra fe y seguir en nuestro caminode fe? "Hermanas y hermanos, somos libres. Somos libres para vivir nuestras vidas comocreemos que debemos, a sabiendas de que desde el principio, Dios nos dijo. Estamosobligados a vivir nuestras vidas fuera de la respuesta al amor y la gracia de Dios.
