    From the visionary world of acclaimed director Scott Cooper (CRAZY HEART, HOSTILES) and

    ButCooperwasn’tinterestedinhorror-for-horror’ssake.Hewasintenttotackleanarrative

    thatwouldallowhimtoemploytheclassichorrorgenreasavehiclefortellingaterrifyingstoryof

    onefamily’sjourneyintodarkness,steepedintheintimacyofasmallnorthwesternseasidetown.

    “HowcouldItalkaboutwhat’shappeninginAmericatodayandsomehowdrawthosethemesinto

    horror?Tome,thebestofthosefilmsshareselementsofsocialcommentary,whilealsodelvinginto

    Theresultwasanemotionally-chargedhorrorfeaturethatblendedNativeAmericanlore

    withfamilydrama—andplentyofrequisitescarymoments.AndCoopersoughttoportraya

    mythicalcreaturewhoembodiedthefearsandweaknessesofasmalltowndecimatedbythe

    societalissuesthatsomanytownsencounter.Butthemythologydidn’tjustcomefromthestory.

    CooperworkedwithacclaimeddirectorChrisEyre(SMOKESIGNALS)asaconsultanttospecifically

    examinehowthemythologyofanativemonsterimpactsaculturelivingoncherishednativesoil.

    “ChrisandIfirstworkedtogetheronHOSTILES,whichtoldastoryofCheyenne,Apache,and

    Comanchenatives,andIknewhisinsightandexpertiseintothenativemythologyinANTLERS

    wouldbeinvaluable,”saidCooper.

    Chaissonsays,“Ispentabigchunkofmychildhoodinapost-industrialtownontheeast

    coast,aplacewherethepillarofthelocaleconomyhadvanished.Oneofthethingsthatdrewmeto

    Nick'sstorywasthatitevokesthatcrumbling,forlornatmosphereandcraftsahorrorscenariothat

    feelssospecifictothatkindofsetting.”

    “WetooktheprojecttoSearchlightandweresurprisedtolearnthatScottwasinterested

    becausehetypicallywriteshisownmaterial,”saysDale,who’dpreviouslyworkedwiththestudio

    hishelpincreatingsomethingthatfeltrealandlikeitwaspartoftheearth.”

    Itturnsouttheprofessionaladmirationwasquitemutual:DelTorohadlongadmired

    Cooper’swork,especiallyhisgrueling2013filmOUTOFTHEFURNACE,starringChristianBaleand

    WoodyHarrelson.“Tome,ScotthadactuallydirectedagreathorrormovieinOUTOFTHE

    FURNACE,”saysDelToro.“Itwassoscary.Woodyisoneoftheall-timegreatmonstersinthat

    movie.WhatIalsosawinOUTOFTHEFURNACEwashowScotthandledtensionsobeautifully;the

    softer,emotionalsideofhumans.Butalso,thebrutal.”

    Cooper’swide-rangingacuityasastorytelleracrosssuchdisparategenresgaveDelTorothe

    assurance,heneededthatthetwocouldenjoyasharedvisiononANTLERS.“Forme,it’samovie

    aboutrage,hatredandwhathappenswhenwedestroytheearth,”saysDelToro.“Whethertherage

    happensinafamily,inacountryortotheenvironment,it’sallaninvocationforthiscreature:The

    rageiswhatsummonshim.Yes,ANTLERSisahorrormovie,butit’salsoareallydark,poignantand

    emotionalsocialdrama,anchoredbysurprisingandimmenselydedicatedperformances.”

    TheWendigoasHorrorMonster:

    PreservingandProtectingtheNativeLorethatInspiredAntlers

    TheonlythingmorecriticaltoDelToroandCooperthancreatingaconvincing,uniqueon-

    screen“monster”wasmakingsurethecreatureattheheartofANTLERSdrewaccuratelyand

    respectfullyfromtheNativelorefromwhichitcame.AndmuchlikethelegendarySasquatch

    creatureofthePacificNorthwest(a.k.aBigfoot),theWendigoisasmuchrootedinregional

    storytellingasitsensuingplaceintheimaginationsoffolklorefans.Theproductionworkedwith

    IndigenousNationsconsultantGraceL.DillonwhileresearchingandfilmingaspectsofNative

    Americanfolkloreandculture.

    TheWendigo(alsospelled‘Windigo’and‘Wetiko’)isgenerallyknownasamythological

    deer-likecreatureand/orevilspiritinthemythologyoftheNativeAmericanAlgonquiantribes,

    basedinthenorthernforestsofNovaScotia,theEastCoastofCanada,andGreatLakesRegionof

    Canada.TheWendigoiswidelyacceptedasadestructive,cannibalisticcreatureassociatedwith

    winter,coldnessandstarvation,andispresentinthetraditionalbeliefsystemofmanyAlgonquin-

    speakingpeoples,includingtheOjibwe,theSaulteaux,theCree,theNaspapiandtheInnu.

    ThefilmmakersreliedheavilyonvariousmembersofandexpertsintheNativeAmerican

    communityinbringingtheWendigo-inspiredmonsterinANTLERStolife,includingGraceT.Dillon,

    AnishinaabeandNativeAmericanAdvisor,whoofferedauniqueexpertise.

    “Inthe1990’s,therewasasensethattheWendigomighthavebeeninspiredbyNative

    contactwithEuropeannations,”saysDillon,whoservesasaprofessorintheIndigenousNations

    StudiesProgramatPortlandStateUniversityinPortland,Oregon.“Withinmycommunity—Ihave

    familybothatGardenRiverNationinOntario,CanadaandBayMillsNationintheupperpeninsula

    ofMichigan—we’vespokenaboutmanyaspectsoftheWendigo.Itcanmanifestinmanyways,but

    itisfirstandforemostalwaysaspirit.”

    DillonaddsthatanoldertermusedbytheAnishinaabepeople(thegroupofculturally

    relatedindigenouspeoplesinCanadaandtheUnitedStates)forWendigoliterallymeans“greed.”

    “Welivetogetherasvillagesandareconstantlysharing,soanyformofexcessivenessis

    seenasaheinousthing,”saysDillon.“Buttherearevariationsonthis,too.Wendigocanalsobethe

    fiercewindsthatcomeoffofLakeSuperioranddamage‘thecommonpot’ofourcommunity,aswe

    callit.TheWendigocanenterintoanykindofconsciousness,manifestingasanimalsorhumans.

    “TheWendigolegendfeltlikeanaturalfitforthisplacebecauseit'samonsterthatreflects

    ourowndemonsandfeedsoffofourworstpotential.It'sthespiritoflonelyplaces.Inatownlike

    CispusFallstheWendigocomestobeastand-infortheissuespeoplewouldrathernotconfront,”

    saysscreenwriterChaisson.“It'salsojustaterrifyingconceptbecauseawendigo,bydefinition,isa

    personwhohasbecomecorrupted.Itliterallycomesoutofus,”henotes.

    FilmmakerChrisEyre(SMOKESIGNALS,SKINWALKERS)alsoservedasAnishinaabeandNativeAmericanAdvisoronANTLERSandsaystheWendigoisaparticularlypoignantmetaphor

    forthefractiousrelationshiphumansnowhavewiththeland.“TheWendigobringsamessagethat

    you’veencroacheduponterritoryyou’renotallowedtoencroachupon,andtheWendigowillsetit

    right,”saysEyre.“Thelargermessageisthattheearthhasbeenhereformillionsofyears.Butwe

    canneverdestroytheearth;shewilldestroyus.Shedoesn’tneedustogoon.”

    FirstNationsCanadianactorGrahamGreene(WINDRIVER),whoplaysWarrenStokes,“the

    town’sgrumpyex-sheriff”inANTLERS,putsanevenfinerpointonthemonstrousentityatthe

    heartofthisstory:“TheWendigoisthepainandmiserythatlivesinallofus,anditcomesout

    eventually,”saysGreene.“Itliveseverywhere,andyoucan’tgetawayfromit.”

    Veterans,RisingStarsandBreakthroughTalent:

    GettingtoKnowtheAntlers’Cast

    TantamounttoCooperandDelToro’svisionforexecutingarooted,multi-dimensional

    horrorexperiencewascastingperformers,likeGreene,whopossessabelievableblendofgravitas,

    Fortheirleadactors,theydidn’thavetolookfurtherthanGoldenGlobe®winnerKeri

    RussellandEmmy®nomineeJessePlemonswho,ason-screensiblingsbattlingdemons(both

    literalandfigurative)exudeasharedrelatabilityandearthinessrarelyseeninthehorrorgenre.

    “IwasahugefanofScott’sfilmCRAZYHEART,”saysRussell,whowrappedhercritically

    acclaimedrunonFX’sRussian-spydramaTheAmericansin2018.“Ialsolikedthatthehorrorgenre

    wasanewthingforbothofus.AndafterlearningGuillermowasinvolved,Ithoughtitwouldbefun

    toliveintheirworld.”

    InANTLERS,Russell’scharacterJuliareturnsafter15yearsawaytothesmall,economically

    depressedNorthwesttowninwhichshegrewup,inlargeparttohelprepairherrelationshipwith

    herbrother.“Thereisadarkfamilyhistorybetweenthem,”shesays,hintingattheabusethatJulia

    andherbrotherPaulbothsufferedaschildren.“Maybeasadistractionfromallofthis,shebecomes

    intrigued,thenobsessed,withatroubledstudentofhers.”

    Russellcontinues:“IthinktherearealotofsmalltownsinAmericathathavebeenaffected

    bytheopioidcrisislikethisone.Andtome,themonsterinANTLERSisananalogyforthe

    destructionoffamilies,whetherfromdruguse,alcoholismorthelossofjobs.Ithoughtalotabout

    allofthatinplayingthisrole.Alongsidethehorrorelements,there’sthatsignaturequietofaScott

    Cooperfilmthat’salsoinAntlers;themergingofverydifferentgenres.”

    “IthinkthecharacterofJuliaseesquiteabitofherselfinLucasWeaver,playedbyJeremyT.

    indelibleactingwork,suchasthatdonebyRussellandPlemons,whoeffortlesslyembodythe

    thestreetsofanysmalltowninAmerica,”hesays.“They’rebothsoaccessibleandrelatable—the

    perfectvoicesfortheseroles.Keriissimplyterrific.Notunlikeotherstrongheroines,Clarice

    transformationatthecenterofthestory,ANTLERSofferedanarrativeframeworkwithinwhich

    urgentsocio-culturalcommentarycouldthrive.

    “WefindFrankinasituationinwhichmanyfindthemselvesintoday’ssociety—people

    caughtupintheworldofdrugs,”saysHaze,whocuthisteethinSundanceindiefilmslikeASILAY

    outlookingforfoodtogivetomylittlebrotherandfather,”saysThomas,whowasjust11yearsold

    duringfilming.“Mycharacter,Lucas,mostlykeepstohimselfandisbulliedbyacharacternamed

    Clint.So,themoviestartswithmebeinghurt,mentallyandphysically.”

    AfterClintfacesabrutaldemise,Thomassayshisperformancehadtoevolvefromafear-

    basedplacetomoreoutwardlyemotional.“InonesceneI’mrunninghomeandhavetearsrunning

    downmyface,”hesays.“Ithinkthereal-lifepartsofthismovie[likebullyingandhisnothavinga

    mother]givemycharacterhisperspectiveoftheworld.Inthebeginning,hehastotakecareof

    himself.Butattheend,hesortofhasamotherandshecantakecareofhim.Thenhewon’thaveto

    killanimalsandeatthem!She’llfeedhimsandwichesandstuff.”

    JonesplaysWeaver’syoungerbrotherAiden.HesayshesharedmanyofThomas’on-screen

    challenges–andthensome.“Atfirstmycharacterisanormal,kindofhappykid.Butlaterhe

    becomessadderandturnsintoamonster,”saysJones,whoparticularlyenjoyedundergoingAiden’s

    physicaltransformationfromboytobeast.

    watchingGOOSEBUMPS;it’snottoohorrifyingandit’sstillgoodformyage.”

    ForPlemons,it’sANTLER’Sinfusionofdifficultthemesaboutchildrenandfamiliesintothe

    broaderstorythatmakesitaspecialpieceofart.“Ihopethemovieencouragesconversationsabout

    thestrugglesofmanyAmericans,andwhatwe'redoingtotheearth,”hesays.“Ihaveayoungchild

    now,andeventuallywehavetostartlearningfromourmistakes.Ihopethefilmmovesandinspires

    TheCreature-Creators,VisualEffectsProsand

    SettingtheTone

    CreatingtheworldinwhichtotellANTLERS’uniquehorrorwasarareenterpriseinthat

    nearlyalloftheartistswhocametotheprojecthaddiversecreditsoutsideofthescopeof

    traditionalhorror-genrecreators.

    “IreallyrespondedtoScott’saesthetic,”saysProductionDesignerTimGrimes,whohad

    previouslycollaboratedwithsuchvisionarydirectorsasDarrenAronofsky(THEWRESTLER),Gus

    VanSant(LASTDAYS)andLynneRamsay(YOUWERENEVERREALLYHERE).“HeandIoperated

    inthesamewheelhouseinthatwebothwantedthesetsandlocationstofeelrealandgrounded,so

    whenweintroducedthemythicalWendigo,itfeltmoreimpactful.”

    ANTLERS’CinematographerFlorianHoffmeister(THEDEEPBLUESEA,OFFICIAL

    SECRETS)sayshisuniquechargewastotranslatetheaboveethosintoadistinctshootingstyle.

    “Scottwantedsomethingthatcombinedheartfelthumanelementswithhorrorandthe

    supernatural,”saystheGerman-bornHoffmeister,whosenumerouscreditsinbothTVandfilm

    havenettedhimcritically-acclaim,includinganominationbytheAmericanSocietyof

    CinematographersforhisworkonAMC’sTheTerror.“Wehadtostaytruthfultothegenreand

    createsuspensethroughlighting,forexample.Butifwedevotedallofourenergytothesuspense,

    we’driskcreatingsomethingoverlyGothic,whichwouldn’tdojusticetotheemotionalpartofthe

    story.Soweachievedourcompromiseoftruthfulness-meets-suspensethroughlensing,which

    createsimmediacy—lensesdirectlyimpacttheperceiveddistanceofthecameratothesubject—

    andthetonerequiredbythehorrorgenrewasachievedmainlythroughlighting.”

    CreatureCreation

    TocreateANTLERS’signaturemonster,DelTorocalledonfrequentart-department

    collaborator,GuyDavis,withwhomhe’dpartneredonTHESHAPEOFWATER,PACIFICRIM,

    CRIMSONPEAKandFX’sTheStrain.

    “IworkedverycloselywithGuyandScottCooperonthedesignfortheWendigo,”saysDel

    Toro.“Agreatrepresentationofa‘kingoftheforest’isonewithantlers;likeacrownofantlersona

    deer.Ithought,‘Ifwearegoingtouseastag,wemightaswelldesignthecreaturearoundthose

    antlersandmakeitacrown,’saysDelToro.“Guyalsotriedtofindsomeasymmetryinthedesign,

    soIsuggestedthatweerasetheeyestorepresentinhuman,blindrage.”

    DelTorocontinues:“Whenyouremovetheeyesonaface,itlosesafocalpoint.Andifyou

    showtheteethintheskull,itseemstobejusthungry!Wedesignedittohavemoreofaflatsurface.

    Wespentalongtimedrawingandsculptingitsothesurfacewouldcatchmostofthelight.Then

    Guycameupwithamotifthatwasalmostlikeafurmadeoflittlethornsontheneck.Heembedded

    itandstartedrendering—itwassogorgeous!Ittookawhileforeachthornandantlertobe

    sculptedindividually.[Creatureeffectssupervisor]ShaneMahanandLegacyEffectsdidafantastic

    jobexecutingallofthat.”

    “ThemaintaskforusatLegacywastocreatethephysicalbeingoftheWendigo,”says

    Mahan.“Afterwegottheconceptdesigns—whenweknewthatthecreaturewouldn’thaveeyes

    andbemorelikeaboneface—everythingfellintoplace.Wewentthroughacoupleofmonthsof

    refiningthedesignwiththeLegacyartistsandworkingcloselywithGuillermoandScott.”

    BreathingLifeintotheWendigo
