  • 1. Classifying Matter: Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures

2. Pure Substances A sample of matter that has definite chemical and physical properties. 3. Elements Small unit of matter Elements are a pure substance represented by chemical symbols Example: Oxgyen O; Carbon C 4. Elements pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substance by physical or chemical means. 5. Elements The following known elements make up MOST of the Earths solid surface, living matter, oceans, and atmosphere. C Carbon (necessary for life) Si - Silicon H - Hydrogen N - Nitrogen O Oxygen (most abundant) Fe - Iron Na - Sodium 6. Compounds Pure substance composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Made of elements in a specific ratio that is always the same Has a chemical formula Can only be separated by chemical means, not physically 7. Can you identify the following? You will be shown a series of photos. Tell if each photo represents an item composed of an element or a compound. Review: An element contains just one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together. 8. Element or Compound? Copper 9. Element or Compound? Copper 10. Element or Compound? Table Sugar 11. Element, Compound, or Mixture?
