RULE OF THIRDS PROJECT: ILLUSTRATOR CS6 VERSION In this project, you will need to create a composition built around the rule of thirds. There will be a number of

requirements for what you use in your project, and how it is put together. Beyond that, you will have complete freedom.

1. REQUIRED OBJECTS

A. The silhouette of an easily recognized object. (Safety Pin) A B C

B. The initials of that object. (SP)

C. The name of that object. (Safety Pin)

o Choose a font (dafont.com)

D. A texture created as a custom swatch.

2. RULES ON HOW TO BUILD THE PROJECT

Only 1 or 2 colors, plus black and white.

Your focal point, and much of your imagery must be related

to the rule of thirds. Notice how many elements in the safety

pin example run along the red 1/3 lines.

Draw a grid on the inch lines, group it, then stretch it over

your 1st art board. Duplicate it, then cover the 2nd art board.

Create your silhouette (Pen Tool)

Choose a font, or a few, you would like to use. (Dafont.com)

4. CREATE 6 ROUGH DRAFTS (20% of Grade!)

Try to have a 50/50 split between black and white for your

practice. These should be simple. Add the small details

later. Think where your Focal Point will go.

2 must be done with just your silhouette.

2 with just text.

2 with text and silhouettes.

5. MODIFYING AND ADDING DETAILS TO YOUR PROJECT

There are a lot of different ways to add interest to your project.

Flip, Rotate and Scale your silhouette and text objects.

Manipulate your stroke and fill to create solid/translucent, outlined/dotted, and negative shapes.

Change the thickness of your stroke, use gradients and solid forms.

Use parts of objects, overlap shapes, and let shapes break out of the picture plane.

6. TURNING IN YOUR WORK

1. Create a folder for all of your work. Name it: Period#-ROTD-Lastname-Firstinitial Ex: 5-ROTD-Huffman-C

a. ALL work turned in should be saved as a jpeg file. To see how to do this, go here:
