Chef’s Corner Chef Dave shares the upcoming culinary delights of summer.

Calendar of Events See July at a glance with the monthly calendar of events.

They say summer officially started June 21st…I don’t know about you, but I think it started way before then judging on how hot it’s been. With that in mind, don’t forget the pool is open and offers a great place to relax after a round of golf. Also, remember Caryl Keir will be instructing water aerobics classes through the end of summer, and what better way to get your heart rate up than in the comfort of the club’s pool. I say comfort, but Caryl can actually make you sweat in the pool with all her exercises she puts you through. All members are welcome, and yes that includes the men. The group is growing, so come out and see how much better you will feel after a little exercise. Classes will be held Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:30 – 9:30. If you have any questions, please contact Caryl at 936-273-1339. Please remember that we have no lifeguard on duty at the pool, and anyone under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. We want everyone to have fun, but most of all we want everyone to have a safe time at the pool.

The kids are out of school, and now is when we need everyone’s extra set of eyes to help us watch the club house and golf course. Unfortunately every year about this time we go through a rash of vandalism. This year is no exception; we have had several cases of vandalism to the club house, as well as the golf course. We hope that, with everyone paying extra attention, we can stop the problem. Thanks in advance for everyone’s help.

See you on the green and by the pool!

When I watch the practice putting green, I can’t tell you how often I see people practicing the wrong putts. And although practicing 45-footers may be fun, you’re not likely to have many of them during your round. Odds are, the vast majority of your putts will be from 15 feet and in. So, start with a 15-foot putt and work your way in toward the hole. To test yourself, see if you can make three in a row from each length. Finally, if time permits, go ahead and roll that 45-footer if you’d like. But don’t be surprised if you never have to putt one that length the entire day.

The MGA played the Match Play Championship on June 4th, 5th and 6th. We had a great turn out and the matches were very competitive. I want to thank everyone for coming out and also would like to thank the C.C.C. members for playing as well. The results are as follows:

News from the RP LGA

Second Flight Third Flight 1st James Damborsky 1st L.C. Hill

2nd James Baldridge 2nd Ken Been

3rd John Schmidt 3rd Gary Wetter

Chef’s Corner A Refreshing Summer Treat As the weather is getting hotter, who doesn’t love cool refreshing watermelon? Right now is the perfect time to enjoy this seasonal fruit! It’s not only refreshing, but actually has enough water content to hydrate the body on these hot days. To help keep you cool, and provide a healthy snack, we’ll have watermelon in the Grille this month. Look for it the next time you’re in; it’s the perfect time of year!

A Reminder about Drinking on the Course We want to make sure that everyone is aware of the laws that regulate alcohol consumption on Club property. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) prohibits anyone from brining outside beverages onto the Club’s Property. In the past year, TABC has created a new taskforce that focuses on golfing facilities. River Plantation has been visited twice during sting operations, and the officers involved have looked for even the smallest violations. Please note that violators of TABC policy will receive a fine ranging from $100 to $1,000 and/or a jail term of up to one year.

To help ensure that our beverage license remains safe, RP management group has created a taskforce with select RP members and staff. These members will notify RP management if they see any violations of TABC policy. And you can help by reminding friends or colleagues of these rules when they join you on the course or at the pool. We appreciate your attention to this important matter.

Making RPCC Smoke Free! Starting July 1st, River Plantation Country Club will become a smoke-free facility. Smoking will no longer be permitted inside the club house, including the bar and locker rooms. We thank you for your cooperation.

Upcoming Events On July 9th, 10th & 11th, we are having our Member/Member Tournament. On July 9th we will be having the Calcutta at 7:00 p.m. We will shotgun at 9:00 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. C.C.C. members are welcome to join us; the fee for the tournament is $45. We will have lunch on Saturday (which is included in the fee) along with a keg of beer. Sign up in the pro shop, and be sure to get your sign up number.

Making Room for the Kiddos We have started Jr. Golf, so the last tee time on Mondays will be 12:00 noon. If you would like to play Monday evening, we could get you out there around 7:00 p.m. Please call the pro shop for more information or set up a tee time.

One down two to go! Summer months that is. The course is good and getting better by the day. We will start spraying the purple nut sedge, goose grass, and crab grass right away. You will see some yellowing, which is normal. So on the days the course is closed, we have to keep off because all the herbicides we spray will track with foot and cart traffic. The pond on 8 Augusta is coming around; the duck weed that infested it is on its way out. Please remember to repair your ball marks and fill your divots.

Thanks, Ben Hutchins
