Must Be Present To WinThere’s still time to make plans to go to Las Vegas later this month for the IPIA convention. It’s an inexpensive ticket from most parts of the country, rooms are still available at the headquarters hotel, and the registration fee is within reach. What’s not to like?

Let’s look at the business we’re in. If you’re lucky enough to have minimal direct competition, you may be located in a less populated area. Your strongest competition may be the ice machine at the marina or the campground, and that’s an easy competitor to beat. If you don’t know how to sell against it, who do you have to talk with about your business? Who is going to help you get that business back when accounts drop off one by one?

Unless you’re lucky enough to be in a family business, you probably didn’t have a real mentor in the packaged ice industry. Most of you will know a lawyer or two – that’s maybe the best mentored business model there is. You go to work as a junior associate, work under a partner, then if you’re good enough and tough enough to gut out the years of 60 hour weeks, you can become a partner one day. You will have learned a lot on the way.

There’s nothing like that for us. We speak to people every day who have grown their packaged ice businesses from a Manitowoc and a pickup truck to a full scale plant, six trucks and a 50 mile service radius. Who helped them along as they were coming up? Who helped them make the six or seven figure decisions about plant and equipment? Who helped them come up with a pricing plan for the local Kroger, Albertsons, Publix, King Sooper or whatever your local chain is?

Configure your plant wrong, and you could be leaving pennies on the table for every package. Price your product wrong because you’re eager to get that 27 store contract, and you’ll leave a few more pennies out. After a few mistakes, if you’re out a dime a package, you’re looking at the difference between a comfortable business and a big revenue company where you’re working your own 60 or more hour week in order to make as much per hour as a fast food manager. It’s not worth the trouble or the risk.

This industry has awesome suppliers – companies who can help you configure a plant, set up a packaging line, maybe even introduce you to financing sources. They probably can even help you get that account. What you really need, though, are others who are in the trenches like you. Your local competitor is absolutely not looking to help you. Why not go talk to successful people from across the state, or across the country?

It’s a political season, and one of the topics on the table is the “gig economy” – not just Uber but the world of freelancers who pick up a contract here, a consult there, and they make it work for them. If you have gotten any graphic arts produced or you have a part time bookkeeper, you may have hired a freelancer. It’s great for a lot of people, but some are finding that they are stranded in front of their computers at home or at a coffee shop, and they’re not interacting with people. That’s one thing an office is good for – you find out what is going on, who’s working on a new deal, what hot, what’s not.

The packaged ice industry can be a little like that. You’re not working in a group of people that can tell you who’s working on what, what the new trends are, what to look out for next. The IPIA is your hookup, your water cooler chat, your staff meeting. Nobody is trying to take your job, scam on your commission, or play office politics. It’s a group of peers, of colleagues, and they are interested in your success.

So get on Expedia or Kayak or whatever you use, and call the Venetian. Bring the husband or wife, it’s all pre-bottom line dollars. Just get yourself to Las Vegas, it’s the best way to help your business.

A Nice Service To Oer Your Community During

Dry ice, when combined with hot tap water, can produce vigorous bubbling water and voluminous flowing fog. For example, with five pounds of dry ice in four to five gallons of hot water, the greatest amount of fog will be produced in the first five to 10 minutes. There will be far less fog for the next five to 10 minutes as the water cools down and the volume of dry ice diminishes. As the water cools, the fog becomes wispier. Dry ice makes fog because of its cold temperature. When immersed in hot water, it creates a cloud of true water vapor fog. When the water gets colder than 50°F, the dry ice stops making fog, but continues to sublimate and bubble. The fog will last longer on a damp day than on a dry day.

HOW TO MAKE DRY ICE FOGFor each 15-minute period put five to 10 pounds of dry ice into four to eight gallons of hot water. This will make lots of fog depending upon the temperature of the water and the size of the pieces of dry ice. Hotter water will make more fog. Very hot water will add its own rising steam to the vapor cloud. If there is no steam the fog will flow down hill and in the direction of any air movement. A small fan can help control the direction. Smaller pieces of dry ice with more surface area produce a greater volume of fog and cool the water down much faster. In both cases the result is more fog for a shorter amount of time. Keep the water hot with a hot plate, electric skillet, or some other heat source to produce fog for a longer time. Otherwise when the water gets too cold it must be replaced to continue the fog effects. If the container is completely filled with water the fog will flow over the sides the best. But the dry ice sublimation will vigorously bubble

the water and splash it out. Even a ¾ filled container will splash some, so place the container where spilled water will not ruin anything. The water vapor fog will also dampen the area it flows across, so be careful because after some time floors do get slippery.

With Labor Day marking the end of the summer, the next series of holidays are ushered right in. Beginning with Halloween, your customer base and those special events you are so good at providing for don’t have to miss a beat with your services and products. How about a spooky house for Halloween? How about providing your neighborhood subdivisions with their own ‘graveyard’ ingredients? Your imagination can take it from here. RM thanks Dry Ice Info for allowing us to borrow a few tips from their website.

WELCOME IPIA 98th Annual Convention & Trade Show

THE VENETIAN RESORT HOTEL AND CASINO

November 19-21, 2015

from John Smibert, IPIA Chairman

On behalf of the International Packaged Ice Association, Mary and I would like to welcome you to the 98th Convention and Trade Show at this wonderful venue. The Venetian Resort and Casino will be your home for the next few days. Do take advantage of all it has to offer, especially its location on the always-open Las Vegas Blvd Strip.

This event will be chock-full of interesting and informative speakers, presentations and focus sessions, the most up-to-date products from our loyal associates in the exhibit hall and the camaraderie of your ice industry team members and colleagues. Be sure to take in all that is offered. There is always a take-away nugget!

Opening day, Thursday, gets going with Chris Dunn addressing the Food Safety Modernization Act and how it will affect our packaged ice industry followed by our Annual Business Meeting. Members please be sure to attend to hear not only the Committee Reports, Financials, but Chris Lamond’s Public Affairs presentation. Awards are presented as well for the Dr. Neil Mark of Excellence Perfect PIQCS Audit Scores. Then we will be treated to Keynote Speaker, Rocky Bleier, telling us about his experiences in Vietnam, his injuries and finally of achieving his dreams of excellence, with four Super Bowl wins to his credit. Opening day will also see the Grand Opening of the Exhibit Hall with the signature cocktail contest and carving workshop. Come and see what our wonderful suppliers have brought along this year. Stay for the terrific door prizes!

Friday morning will come early, started by the Roger Breisch Fun-Run Walk. While the exhibit hall is open, ladies are invited to breakfast in the President’s suite with First Lady Mary. Later, climb aboard the buses to the Reddy Ice Plant tour (which includes lunch). Following the tour’s return to the hotel, there will be more top-notch focus sessions offered. This evening wraps up with the Chairman’s poolside “Smashing 70’s” party. Get ready to hustle to the YMCA in your plaid pants and flowered shirt!

On Saturday, early birds can do the fun-run walk again before the final hours of the exhibit hall. Golfers have a late morning tee-off time for the annual Mel Eads Memorial Golf Tournament at the Paiute Club, Mel’s favourite Las Vegas golf destination. If you aren’t going golfing, there is a tour to the Hoover Dam, a fascinating and spectacular feat of engineering. Saturday wraps up with the final convention event- the reception and banquet, where the gavel will officially be passed to incoming president, Tommy Sedler of Home City Ice.

I urge you to come, get involved, and have a great time with your packaged ice industry colleagues, all supporting the IPIA. Remember what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, but I would truly want you to take away lots of information for your own operation and a sense of renewal for the coming  year.

Mary and I look forward to welcoming you to Las Vegas and the Venetian Resort and Casino. Travel safe and we’ll see you on the Strip!

Office RepurposingTrash happens. Especially around the office. Even managing the work environment goes through trending processes. Remember the big bulky metal file cabinets that each weighed a ton? If you were lucky enough to experience a purging of old office equipment in a move or a downsize the last 20 years, chances are you got rid of these and replaced them with lighter weight versions. If not, consider placing your office printer in a drawer as shown here.

Repurposing can happen in any office with any item. It just takes a little down time to think about it. Maybe it's something we can do in the off season.

Beauty IN OUR BUILDINGSThere is nothing quite as vernacular as the classic ice house. Whether you are in a tiny store front in the heart of New York City, or on a seaside stretch with the Atlantic as the backdrop, our ice history is held in our buildings. Over the next several issues, RM will be posting and publishing random photos of our visual art in architecture. There is nothing more nostalgic than the feel of our history in the bones of our buildings.

Everyone across the globe seems to have an impression of Las Vegas, whether they’ve been there or not. You’ve heard it described as a joyful venue of food and entertainment, a risqué walk on

the wild side, or maybe even a place where lot of things can happen and none of them are good.

Like every city, there is plenty to find off the beaten path. The hotel concierge may not mention it (he or she may not know about it). You may need a taxi ride, but you’ll get a local flavor that the newness and neon of the strip can’t give you.

lasvegasstuff you won't find on the strip

Clockwise from top left: Sister duo, Heart, performing at the House of Blues in Las Vegas last December; Big Rig Jig sculpture by artist Mike Ross; Antler arch.

Viva Las Vegas

Page 15: Refrigeration Magazine - October 15

ArtIt’s been to all the cool festivals: Coachella, Burning Man, and English artist Banksy’s UK based “Dismaland,” billed as the opposite of Disneyland. It’s a massive sculpture made out of two actual tanker trucks by American artist Mike Ross, and it’s going to be permanently installed on Fremont Street. It’s a big logistical deal, so they’re not sure they can get it done by the end of the year. If it’s not there, there are plenty of other installations.

MusicIf you were alive and old enough to listen to the radio in the 70s and 80s, you should remember the sister duo Heart. They are conveniently playing a three night stand at House of Blues on the exact dates of the IPIA convention – the 19th through 21st. The $55 tickets are general admission, so get there early so you can get front row, unlike that time you saw them in high school. Like you’d admit that anyway.

One of the hottest venues in the city is called Brooklyn Bowl. It’s not an outdoor amphitheater like the Hollywood Bowl. This one is an actual bowling alley. Well, half of it is bowling. The other is a 3,000 seat music venue. The only show confirmed at press time is Yellowcard and New Found Glory on Saturday, a multi-award-winning lineup that you won’t hear on your daughter’s favorite station. This venue may book the other nights, and they attract good talent. If you can wait until Tuesday, they have Public Image Ltd., John Lydon’s band. Formerly known as Johnny Rotten. That one.

The only sign of country music at Las Vegas Country Saloon, on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas, is on their sign. Actually, they changed it to LVCS. This place books hard rock, metal, electronic – it’s more anti-country. Their Halloween lineup includes Freakshow Wrestling Halloween Death Party. They haven’t posted their bookings for late November yet, but check their website. You can assume it’s not Celine Dion or Heart.

Food Off the Beaten PathTex-Mex: You’re in the American southwest. Don’t look for lobster rolls or French continental. Phat Phrank’s earns 4 ½ stars on Yelp and is a heavy favorite of people who actually live in the city. Topping it off, it’s cheap. Spend $25 on a plate of fish tacos if you want, just know that it is absolutely unnecessary. You’ll probably meet better characters, too. It’s near the airport, so maybe save it for your trip to head home. Just remember they’re open 7 – 7, so don’t go for a late dinner.

Barbecue: Billy’s BBQ offers a pretty standard fare for this kind of place – brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken. Again, locals seem to like it. What is attractive is that they offer sides that, outside the South, are called soul food: okra, turnip and collard greens. Probably good cornbread too, but that wasn’t mentioned. On the southwest side of the LV perimeter highway. Heads up: no alcohol.

Asian Fusion: You’re in Las Vegas, and there’s probably an Asian fusion joint at every hotel. There may not be ethnic neighborhoods in Vegas, but not far from the strip you can find KoMex Fusion. Authentic kim chi burritos and under $10 teriyaki mean that unlike that place in your restaurant lobby, it’s cheap. Also no alcohol.

Desert Denizens These folk art denizens can be found along Highway 488 watching tourists go from Baker, Nevada to Great Basin National Park. Check both sides of the road.

Permanent Wave Art GalleryBaker is site of a unique open air art gallery. Dubbed the "Permanent Wave" by its initial creator, according to a plaque mounted in the middle of town, "Doc" began by filling a rubber glove with plaster and capping a fence post with it. To this "Permanent Wave"

has been added many other exhibits including: The Alien Ranger, The 1918 Essex with Power Steering, The Footfall player, Sunglass Stabile, A C-D Character, The Tired Eye, The Par 3, and many

others. The majority of the displays are on State Road 488, enroute to the Lehman Caves (no known relation) in the Great Basin National Park. Also check out the car parts T-Rex on Mainstreet in Baker.

Scrap Metal Dinosaur and Machine GunnerTwo metal sculptures: One of a man behind a machine gun, pointed at the other, which appears to be a small T-Rex dinosaur. On the right side of the main road driving into town going northwest.

Antler ArtMassive ranch gate made of elk antlers. Hwy 50 between Ely and Baker. The entryway to "Horns-A-Plenty Antler Art," which makes light fixtures from antlers and old wagon wheels.

There is more to Vegas than you would think, and I hope this gets you thinking about finding something unique to take home with you. It might save you some money.

I am an ‘off-the-beaten-path’ kind of traveler. Besides, I don’t gamble, but I’m not going to miss the IPIA Convention in Vegas, so I

looked around for some things that I may like to see while I’m off the

convention floor.

David Bryant grew up in Plant City, Fla., racing Suzuki motocross and playing defensive end in football. RM asked Mr. Bryant if he ever got really hurt while motocrossing. “I got hurt so many times it would fill the pages of your magazine a few times,” he chuckled.

Obviously not averse to pain or risk, it stands to reason that going into the ice business would be a good fit for him. Before The Ice Man, Mr. Bryant started an air conditioning business, working for a local distributorship out of Tampa. Calling on restaurants in the equipment business, Mr. Bryant would be asked over and over again by his customer base, “Do you sell ice?”

“It was obvious that nobody in Jacksonville was selling ice after 5:00 at night,” he said.

After five years he moved to Gainesville, Fla., met his wife, and also his future business partner, Pete Wood. He and Pete started their ice business 27 years ago with a 1000 lb. Ice-O-Matic ice machine, selling to restaurants under the company name of Jax Ice.

Three years into it, they changed the name to The Ice Man, “Because every time we walked into one of our establishments, they’d say, ‘the ice man is here!’, he said.”

In the beginning, it was just David Bryant. He’d do everything – fill the machines, make deliveries, then rush back to the business to empty the machines so they’d not fill up and shut off.

David Moncrief soon joined him in the business and helped him with bagging and deliveries. Then Mike Davis came on board, followed by Ray Chancey and Sherri Ash. These four employees have been with The Ice Man for 20 or more years. David's wife, Kathy, joined him about five years into the business and together along with Pete, they built the business to where it is today. “A lot of very long days and nights but very well worth it,” says David Bryant.

The Ice Man officially started in 1989 and is a full service operator and supplier with several Vogt’s, three

bagging lines with Hamer 525 baggers, and 16 trucks.

When RM asked about children coming into the business, Mr. Bryant shared, “The oldest of my two daughters at 25, is leaving for an 11 month mission trip. She said she wouldn’t really like to work this hard! And my younger 22 year-old-daughter is working with us now.”

The Ice Man operates a full service facility today with main hubs in Jacksonville and Orlando, but their client base reaches to Atlanta.

David Bryant was President of the SIE for two straight years and he currently sits on its board. He is also a member of the board of the IPIA and has been on a number of committees, including current Chairman of the Plant Operation Committee for the past two years.

Innovation and complexity aren’t necessarily synonymous. That distinction is one that can be missed

easily in terms of product development – especially when automation comes into play. Successful companies know how to make improvements without necessarily reinventing the wheel or adding layers of difficulty to something that isn’t broken.

This has been a guiding principle of Plymouth, Minn.-based Hamer, LLC, a manufacturer of packaging equipment specializing in automated bagging systems, fillers, sealers, and robotic palletizers. While Hamer is in the business of automation, it does not sell products that are so complicated that it takes a mechanical engineer to operate them.

“We call it ‘practical innovation,’ because what we try to do is not add a lot of complex, technological bells and whistles,” explains President Dan Brown. “Our equipment is manufactured and designed to be very simple to run, simple to operate, and simple to keep running.

So while we bring innovation – like in our filling equipment, where we’re adding speed and accuracy – we didn’t do that by adding a lot of complexity. We kept the application of the technology very simple,” he says.

80 Years of InnovationThis philosophy of simplicity, as well as listening to customers and providing them with technical solutions that their businesses require, is the reason Hamer has been in the business for eight decades and continues to grow.

“That’s one of the drivers for our success,” says Brown. “The Hamer product is very robustly built, and it’s extremely simple to keep running – and that’s really key,” he notes. Brown points out that many of their customers don’t have complex preventive maintenance programs in place and rely on operations or maintenance staff to take care of the equipment. “It’s got to be simple, so they can keep it running,” he says.

Launched in 1927, Hamer got its start when the founder of the company’s namesake came up with a method to automate the closure of large bags of flour using a hog ring wire tie. Known as the Hamer ring bag closer, this became the company’s very first product and provided a durable, cost-effective bag closing system for the flour milling industry. Hamer remained fairly small for nearly 60 years following its launch, according to Brown, and it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the company began to experience significant growth as it entered the bagging automation market.

Today, Hamer offers a wide variety of industrial packaging equipment to meet virtually any plant requirement – from standalone bag top closers to gross weigh bagging scales to manual bag palletizing conveyors. For fully-automated bagging systems, the company produces some of the most advanced, robust, and productive turnkey systems in the industry. Hamer boasts thousands of installations running hundreds of different materials, giving it unparalleled field experience in the industry, which serves as the basis for all project and product design improvements.

Recently, Hamer was acquired from its holding company, Hanover Partners and Tuckerman Capital by Duravant, a Downers Grove, Ill.-based global engineered equipment manufacturer serving the food processing, packaging, and material handling sectors. The purchase expands Duravant’s packaging platform and strengthens

Hamer’s 60+ employees manufacture palletizing, filling, and bagging equipment in a 70,000-sq.-ft. plant in Plymouth, MN.

its engineering, design, and service expertise in bag management and system solutions according to a company press release.

“It’s a fairly new acquisition, but the opportunity with Duravant is that it has an opportunity to invest, to improve our products and our customer support processes beyond its current scope,”

Brown relates. “The good news I think is that Duravant is looking to really stimulate Hamer’s growth curve, and they are strong investing partners to help provide some more infrastructure for us to continue our growth and our customer service ethic,” he adds.

Three Categories in GrainIn the feed and grain industry, Hamer focuses on three primary product categories: bagging automation, bag filling using net weigh scale technology, and bag palletizing. The company prides itself on manufacturing equipment that is considered best in class for the industry and doesn’t dilute its focus on dozens of different product lines. Instead, Brown says the company applies its practical innovation in all areas to help grain professionals work smarter, not harder.

Brown notes that one of the company’s most recent product launches – the Model 1200BH Bag Hanger – makes the machine nearly all electronic to improve performance while still making it easy to use.

“We really reduced the air consumption on that machine,” says Brown. “Com-pressed air and maintaining air systems in plants is expensive, and we went to more of an all-electronic design. It also improves the repeatability of the machine.”

With its net weigh scale, Hamer was able to improve the accuracy and speed

of typical net weigh scale designs significantly, so that customers can use less expensive scale technology while maintaining rates of 20 bags per minute with repeatable, accurate weight measurements. “It adds a ton of value to the marketplace,” Brown notes.

Finally, in the area of palletizers, Hamer has turned to robotics solutions that offer exceptional

quality but also are cost-effective and, of course, simple to operate.

“The robotic palletizers bring a very industrial, high-quality, heavy-duty design, as well as keep it very simple to run,” Brown says. “We have a very simple operator interface we’ve developed that makes it easy to train operators. And the price points are good and make it a very competitive product,” he adds.

High Quality, Timely DeliveryAccording to Brown, Hamer’s lead times are designed to deliver a high-quality product quickly. In fact, many of the company’s machines can be delivered in just four to six weeks as a standard order fulfillment time. That’s no small feat for a company staffing 60 employees, but it’s a testament to its commitment to quality and service.

“We work hard to maintain this availability regardless of order volume to meet our customers’ requirements for securing products as quickly as possible,” Brown says. “When a decision

is made to add a packaging machine, often our customers are under timeline requirements to fulfill a contract. And if specific dates are required, we’ll do our best to manage manufacturing to ensure we can meet those customer requirements as well,” he says.

All Hamer products are tested thoroughly as components, subassemblies, and finished machines. When a product leaves the plant, Hamer assures it has been documented and approved for quality testing.

“Fast manufacture, innovative value-added designs, and stringent quality assurance – that is the Hamer ethic,” Brown says.

Of course, if there are any problems or defects with the equipment, support is just a phone call away. Hamer Technical Support professionals have a unique combination of machine building and field service responsibilities. That means whenever a customer calls for technical support, he or she is connected immediately to an experienced technician who not only knows the company’s machine designs but also understands extensive real-world application in a manufacturing plant.

While the company isn’t one to spend much time doing a lot of self-promoting, its business philosophy is simple: “Basically, our job is to take care of our customers. If the bagging plant is down and the customer needs a part, we need to be able to get him or her the equipment right away,” Brown says.

To that end, he says that Hamer keeps nearly $2 million in parts inventory in stock for same-day/next-day delivery. “So really, it’s all about taking care of the customer. And I think that is what we are really known for. It is not just a customer service marketing handle – we truly walk the talk every day and do a good job of really taking care of people,” Brown concludes.
