A Retirement Tribute to Rabbi Stephen H. Pinsky

Temple Beth Torah June 1, 2013

Page 2: Rabbi Pinsky Tribute Book

Message from the Co-Chairs of the Rabbi Pinsky Retirement Tribute Committee When we were asked to co-chair Rabbi Pinsky's Retirement Tribute Committee, we were both honored to be chosen. We knew the importance of giving Rabbi Pinsky a farewell befitting his loyal and dedicated service. We realized that we shared a common goal, to ensure that Rab-bi Pinsky would have the special weekend he so deserves. It didn't take long for us to devel-op a wonderful friendship making it such a pleasure to plan these events together. Over the past year, we have had the opportunity to get to know Rabbi Pinsky and his wife Lisa on a deeper level and that has been a blessing. One of the things that we have enjoyed the most is reading the tributes to Rabbi Pinsky as they came in from all over the country. It is clear that he has walked life's path with all of us. We want to personally thank each and every one of you for sharing your kind words and for giving so generously to the Rabbi Stephen H. Pinsky Tribute Fund. Rabbi Pinsky once said "A rabbi's world is his or her people. . ." He has given much of his strength, wisdom and love to so many people. It is evident that Rabbi Pinsky's world will continue after his retirement. We would also like to share our thanks with our hard working committee who put in many hours and ideas to make this weekend possible. This eventful weekend would not have hap-pened without you. Thank you Amy Bergman, Cheryl Cordes, Ian Cordes, Rich Lebowitz, Louise Marks, Lorena Powell, Marcia Weber and Janna Zaidspiner. This letter would be re-miss without thanking Lois Pesaturo and Beth Tanner for all of their help and support in plan-ning this special tribute to Rabbi Pinsky. Lastly, we want to thank the entire Congregation of Temple Beth Torah for supporting us in this once in a lifetime happening. Rabbi Pinsky, may your retirement be all you want it to be. Please never forget you belong to a family of families. B'Shalom Mandy Rubenstein Sue Thornton Co-Chairperson Co-Chairperson

Our Rabbi – Stephen H. Pinsky – was born in New York City and grew up in the Riverdale section of the Bronx., graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was ordained a “Rabbi in Israel” in 1971 by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity by his alma-mater in 1996. Rabbi Pinsky began his rabbinic career as the Assistant and then the Associate Rabbi of Temple Beth-El in Great Neck, New York. Five years later, he was named Rabbi of Temple Sinai of Bergen County located in Tenafly, New Jersey. In July 1981, Rabbi Pinsky was invited to become the Associate Rabbi of Temple Israel, Minnesota’s largest congregation, with a membership of over two thousand households. He was elected Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel in 1986 and remained in that position until 1991 when he was named Regional Director of the Midwest Council of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations – now known as the Union for Reform Judaism – by the late Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler. In that capacity, he maintained contact with sixty-five congregations in the Union’s Midwest Region stretching from Knoxville, Tennessee in the East to Grand Junction, Colorado and Casper, Wyoming in the West traveling widely from his office in St. Louis, Missouri. During his tenure in Minneapolis, Rabbi Pinsky was part of a national movement dedicated to moving Reform worship toward a more traditional style including a wider use of Hebrew in the liturgy, a greater emphasis on ritual as well as an increase in the depth and breadth of Jewish education for young people and adults. In the larger Minnesota community, Rabbi Pinsky was appointed to a committee by the late Governor Rudy Perpich whose purpose was to establish an institution which would serve the humanitarian needs of its citizens. Along with the Presidents of the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic, the Dean of the University of Minnesota’s Law School and other state notables, Rabbi Pinsky helped establish the Center for the Victims of Torture which he later served as Co-Chair of its Board. The Center is now internationally recognized as a premier institution for serving the needs of a growing population of torture victims in the United States and worldwide. Rabbi Pinsky also served as State Chair of the Midwest Rhodes Scholarship Committee and on the boards of such diverse institutions as the Park-Nicollet Medical Foundation, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Bishop Preuss Leadership Award of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Alfred Adler Institute of Minnesota, Planned Parenthood of Minnesota and the famed Children’s Theater Company in Minneapolis. In addition, Rabbi Pinsky served as a member of the Joint Rabbinic Placement Commission of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and two separate terms on the Joint Commission on Synagogue Music of the Reform Movement. One of his most significant accomplishments was helping to develop the Interfaith Circles program which was created to foster Christian Jewish dialogue which is still in use nationwide.

4

Throughout his career, Rabbi Pinsky has been active in local and national activities, has an extensive history of commitment to both Jews and Christians and has been the recipient of numerous awards for his dedication to the community at large. While serving as the UAHC Regional Director in St. Louis, Rabbi Pinsky continued his work in community outreach by serving as Vice-President of the St. Louis Chapter of the American Jewish Congress, Secretary of the St. Louis Rabbinic Association and President of the Interfaith Partnership of Greater St. Louis, the largest interfaith organization in Missouri. He also served on the Boards of the St. Louis Jewish Federation and its Jewish Community Relations Council.

In July of 1996, Rabbi Stephen H. Pinsky became the spiritual leader of Temple Beth Torah in Wellington, Florida – a Reform congregation serving the western communities of Palm Beach County – and he was installed in his new position by Rabbi Schindler. During his seventeen years of leadership, Temple Beth Torah has more than doubled in size growing from two hundred to over four hundred fifty families. As the result of his dedication and caring, the congregation has become a premier congregation in South Florida and has served as a model for other “mid-sized” synagogues throughout the nation. It serves as an example of how a congregation can continue to grow yet remain committed to the spiritual, cultural and educational needs of its members. In Rabbi Pinsky’s own words: “Temple Beth Torah is a congregation to which people come to heighten their joys and soften their sorrows. It is a mishpachat mishpachot – a family of families – committed to the values and traditions of our Reform movement and to its mission of reaching out to members and its community l’dor va’dor – from generation to generation.”

While serving the spiritual and pastoral needs of Temple Beth Torah’s growing membership, Rabbi Pinsky continued his passion for interfaith dialogue and cooperation. He served for nine years as Co-Chair of the Interfaith Clergy Council of the Palm Beaches along with Sister Roberta Popara. He also served as President of the Palm Beach County Board of Rabbis, on the Executive Committee of the of the Jewish Community Relations Council and has served on the boards of the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee and Planned Parenthood of Palm Beach County. According to The Palm Beach Post, Rabbi Pinsky is considered to be “…one of the charismatic preachers of Palm Beach County.”

Rabbi Pinsky resides in Wellington with his wife, Lisa, who recently retired after sixteen years of service as Assistant Principal of the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy in West Palm Beach. They are the proud parents of two grown children. Their son, Seth, currently serves as President of the New York City Economic Development Commission and his daughter-in-law, Angela, is the Executive Vice-President of the Real Estate Board of New York. They live in Park Slope, Brooklyn along with their son Theo who was born last Thanksgiving morning. Their daughter, Kira, and her husband, Seth Blakeley, live in Fort Collins, Colorado with their two daughters Ella, who is eight years old, and Sasha, who is five years old.

Tribute to Rabbi Stephen H. Pinsky: I have known Rabbi Pinsky ever since he was the Regional Director and I was the President of the Midwest Region of the UAHC. Naturally we had many problems to solve. Naturally we solved them magnificently well. Frequently there are some disagreements between a Rabbi’s leadership and the Reform leadership, but Rabbi Pinsky was a healer of spirit and spread love wherever he went. I know that he will continue to do this— and more power to him! Paul Uhlmann, Jr.

Lisa and Stephen: It is not the place that honors the person but the person that honors the place. (Talmud Ta’anit 21b)

You helped us conclude that Wellington was the place for us and the rest is history… Yasher Koach on your years of service to our congregation, our community and our movement. You have brought honor to this place with your caring, loving relationship with us all and it is our turn to honor you. May your lives continue to be blessed with good health and good fortune. In Honor of Rabbi Stephen H. Pinsky

How does one go about paying tribute to a Rabbi who has touched both our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren so profoundly?

WITH A GREAT DEAL OF DIFFICULTY!!!

Rabbi, you exemplify such dedication, warmth, compassion, charisma, and courage that you not only have made a deep impact on all your congregants but on the Jewish community on the local, national and international levels.

Even in the face of opposition you have remained steadfast in your beliefs and, thus served as a role model to all of us. You have very large shoes to fill and it is going to be very hard to find someone to take your place. Services at Temple Beth Torah will not be the same without your presence on the bimah. Selfishly we will miss you very much but we understand that need for you and Lisa to have more time for each other, your children and your grandchildren.

We can only say Todah Rabah Rabbi, for all that you have given us. We hope and pray that you will have many years to enjoy all that life has to offer.

Warmest wishes,

Carol and Arnold Bergman

Dear Rabbi Pinsky:

THANK YOU!

Thank you for your sixteen years of Rabbinic leadership and for partnering with our lay leaders to grow a vibrant house of worship and meeting place that is the center of Reform Judaism in the Western suburbs.

Thank you for your friendship and for always being there for us in good times and in times of trial. You have enhanced our appreciation of our faith and its oral and written traditions. You have been a proud and effective leader in Israel.

Thank you for sermons that were meaningful, provocative, and current. You were not afraid to take positions that did not meet the thinking of all the congregants. Personally, we loved them.

Our very best to Lisa and you as you join us in the land of retirement. May the two of you continue to enjoy and love each other for many years to come, and may you continue to go from strength to strength, ad meah v’esrin. With great love and respect,

Unselfish, supportive, empathetic, gracious, generous and always caring, Rabbi Pinsky is a rabbi who is always available and ready to help whenever you need him.

After conducting three Rosh Hashanah services in one day at Temple Israel in Minneapolis on October 4, 1986, Rabbi Pinsky delayed going home to his family for their holiday dinner so he could conduct My (Joan) and Arnold Feinberg’s wedding service to accommodate our children who had to return to college out of town early the next morning. I will never forget his act of graciousness and generosity and my appreciation knows no bounds.

Lisa Pinsky, the Rabbi’s beautiful and intelligent wife, has always been supportive and helpful and is an asset to the congregation and community. They are, indeed, a very rare couple. As the saying goes: “They will be a hard act to follow.”

Joan M. Feinberg

52

Dear Stephen,

We first got to know each other, during our college years, when we were both staff members at the UAHC’s Eisner Camp in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. We later continued our friendship as rabbinic colleagues. Moving to Florida in 2005, has given us the wonderful opportunity of being your congregants.

Temple Beth Torah has been fortunate to have you for so many years serving as their rabbi. You are among the mot talented rabbis in the contemporary rabbinate. You have used your numerous fine qualities of mind and spirit to infuse this congregation with vitality and its members with an understanding and a love of Judaism.

We wish you and Lisa much good health and happiness in your retirement.

I love this saying and value Rabbi Stephen Pinsky because he embodies it. He leads us, teaches us, and lectures us on strength of prayer, but at the same time, asks us to work for the betterment of the world. He knows that our efforts are essential to repair the world. Please offer your help in Rabbi Pinsky’s name.
