First time I was given the responsibility to manage a team dn lead the project, was definitely challenging yet very motivating for me.I already knew the team members, so famiiriat was not an issue. But I first spent a lot of time understanding the project and things to deliver. With the team , identified things need to complete and delegated the responsibilitis.I made extra effort and always gave before time, what I had to deliver. This heped develop a good impression with my team members, alwas had a ver open way of communicating with people, spent some time outside office to help build team.Initially there was a problem when some one blamed he or she had to do, then I wrote down all the tasks and emailed Clear respobilities were delegated and emailed to everyone, so that there was no overlap or confusion. In the end i was successful incomplting the project withought any defects and also showed that I can lead projects , this also helped me grab an opportunity to work in Seattle, USA for one of our clients.

Talk about coming to US to work for insurance companyDifficult because was the first time I was working in US, my company was represented for first time with the client and working well, adapting to US culture and building a good impression were critical to my success.Challenges: Quickly learning the Business systemLearning the US culture –Very high as compared to India, Being assertive and straight forward HonestyExample: I was appreciated by resident of Insurance company, that I was doing a great job, which I felt was great, so I received a lot of appreciations and if I made a mistake,

I made efforts to be more assertive, by actively speaking during meetings, sharing my ideas. For example: I believed if we could prepare a business process document, we can increase productivity and reduce time for any new joinees, I shared my idea with the manager and she believed it was a good thing to do , so you should do that as part of your training.

Like, once I came late, as we were used to working from 9 to 6-7 in India, so I had to adjust my body clock to follow the US culture, of sleeping early, having dinner early and getting up early in the morning.Had problems initially but then I got used to it in 2-3 weeks and I always try to follow that routine till now.

Results : always be on time , follow us timings, and shared ideas to improve productivity and efficiency.Always try to share new ideas and my opinion on whatever we do.

Page 6: Qna for Interviews

Tell me about a time when you had to adjust to a colleague’s working style in order to complete a project or achieve your objectives.

Once I was training some one about an auditing task, the person initially though took a lot of time but was unable to get up to speed as per the expectations. I realized that the person was having trouble, so I decided the spend some time on a daily basis with the person to help him understand the task and complete th process, in the end although he took time to get up tp speed but he got a good crasp of the concepts and was very efficient in his work from that day on.

Situation: ICA team, people from different nationalities, having different styles of workPeople were not submitting work on time, coming late to meetings, being to aggressive, some being too passive. We set few norms around Whats acceptableAccountability- warnings then report in the feedback formAlso, identified that everyone was not good in everything, so we gave work based on strengthsIf some one was not listening, tod them to cool down and be more open to other peoples ideas.Spent an hour everyday with each other for work or met during lunch to better understand each otherThis really helped the team and we started gelling well together, and work productively and efficiently

Tell me about a situation when you had to adjust quickly to a change in organizational, departmental, or team priorities. (How did the change affect you?)

During mckinsey, one of the projects I was working on, the manager used to change the requirements and goals of the project very frequently.Example: turn around analysis, example, do annual analysis, then cance and do quarterly analysis, then changed it semi annual and then back to annual

The main prolem was that the manager did not spend enough time with us in scoping the problem. As per aour analysis we beeie it would be good to look at annual change, rather than other periods, but the manager would just email and not spend time with us on email or meetings to discuss much about the project. We ended up making a lot of changes to our formulas and sheets in the end to come up with soething that was acceptable to the manager, all would have been easier if he had done proper problem solving and given time to discuss and analyze the problem, instead of trying out different scenarios without a basis.

Learning: I was unhappy about the time and effort that went waste into the project, which could have been utilized somewhere else . But taught me an important lesson to problem solve, scope the problem before analysis. There might be certain changes made as you discover few results but randomly throwing out analysis ends up wasting time and money for the organization

Tell me about a time you had to meet a scheduled deadline while your work was being continually disrupted. (What caused you the most difficulty and why?)

a) There are many times when you are working on something , and your work can be disrupted by phone calls, colleagues , making noise or people coming to you for help or advice.

Page 7: Qna for Interviews

to focus as much as I could to complete the work, but there were there people who were excited about a party their team had that day and were discussing and making lot of noises, My best bet is to ask the people to steop the converstaions, if it’s the phone, then put the phone on silent , put busy on communicator, but first is to always go to a break ut room I such situations to give stay away and focus on the work. If no room is available then I will ask people that I am working on a tight deadline and please cooperate and remain calm.

Describe a time when you made a suggestion to improve the work in your organization.Talk about the business process workflow document that you created. It was something that was not asked from me, but I realized this had the potential to increase efficiency and reduce time spne tby people in helping and training people. I the time I sepnt with each person during my business training, I took notes and spent 2 hours every day, on making the document and slides. After 3 weeks, I was able to come up with document and ppt slides explaining the whole business process. This was circulated to embers within the team, initially it helped people in the team gain knowledge, reduced time spent

The documents helped reduce 30 minutes for each person every week, and also reduced the training time from 3 weeks to 1 and half weeks for any new Joinee.

Give an example of an important goal that you set in the past. Tell about your success in reaching it.Talk about Schuck experience. How I led the whole project with minimal supervision. They wante to come into the indian marketIt was a huge challenge for me as expectations were high and it was a whole new experience for me, working with all aspects of businessI first understood the market, Market sizing,Current market vs futureGovt regulationsProducts, where do out products fit in

Tell us about a time when you had to go above and beyond the call of duty in order to get a job doneOnce I receive an email from a Em, to do a short analysis on something I had worked for him in the past for. It was nearly time for me to go home and pretty late at night, I understood from him that it was pvery urgent and required for a client meeting the next day. After scoping the proble I realized that this was another 4-5 hours of analysis.I was newly married and was important to spend more time at home, but t that time I realized the consequences for the manager if this analysis was not done, and hence I decided to give it a shot and compelte it that day. I worked on it for around 4 hours til 3 in the night and completed the analysis and send it that night

I was appreciated by the manager for not only complting the work but also giving valuable insights into the project. If something has to be done, it has to be done and you should try to flexible and open to work and projects.

This not only helped us identify the value of the patent to WARF but

Page 14: Qna for Interviews

and helped drive a strategy for the company but it also helped act as a framework for all future projects to identify the value those patents can bring to the company.

One case we did was with merck, where we had to identify the potential value of the license to a drug inventor when that the company was licensing the product to Merck because of its knowledge and expertise in getting a drug through the FDA and then also commercializing the product. Calculated the NPV to both Merck and the drug maker to recommend if we should go ahead with the deal.

Strategy and Operations1) Stategy was very interesting because it helped build a good foundation in how to look and

develop a framework to solve different types of business issues, 2) what are the important questions we should ask to solve a business problem. For example,

when looking at new businesses it is important to analyze which part of the value chain extracts the most value.

3) All these concepts helped me in building frameworks and recommend a commercialization strategy during my internship.

Key skills to showLeadership qualities

- Talk about your experience with Schuck India- First understand our products , technical specifications and applications- First understand from a high level, the industry, understand the value chain from supplier of

products to end consumers- Regulations and the role of the government, which is huge in this industry- Meet with local end users and understand their requirements in terms of technical

requirements and quantity of different type of products used and the process of buying materials

- Develop a positioning for our products in the market and then do a roadshow. Bigger products

- Take part in technical bidding, by working on satisfying the technical specifications, deciding, pricing of the products.

Page 15: Qna for Interviews

- Helped the company take part in the bidding process and generate revenue of 2 million in the first year

What you learntGreat leadership experienceTook lead and accomplished something about which I had very little or zero knowledgeIn the process developed good contacts and relationships with biggest engineering firms, end users of products- state gas companies, understand how to operate in the environment, ( local presence in key and relationships), most of the parts are bought on lowest price meeting a certain technical standard, 40% of the market might be where you can sell products on a premium pricing with better quality.Doing an analysis to show if we should invest in india or not. Gave a recommendation. With limited capital company decided to expand further in china and not right now in India.I can help the company grow internationally my expeience, and India and other developing nations are huge on natural gas and coal and there is a huge demand for products like ours in this space.

Understand investor requirements when shift from private to public, market expectationWith my experience of working with Dow jones sustainability index, i understand the key areas required to score well in the eyes of investors and can help the company move in that direction, which is specially impotant for the company after it went public

Advantages of going Public - Prestige, brand

Attract talent by offering equity options and rewardsHelps get credit and build better relationships with suppliers and end usersHigher valuation because of higher liquidity,

- Capital to make investments and help grow the companyDisadvantages of going public-Loss of control and keeping up with the streets-The SEC requires public companies to reveal sometimes sensitive information when they go public and on an ongoing basis in required filings. Such information may include data about products, customers, customer contracts, or management that a private company would not have to reveal.-Public companies have additional reporting and procedural obligations since the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, many of which may be costly for a company to implement

Rotate across different areas and work across different functionsHave worked across different areas, business analyst,Skills I gained was client engagement, how to develop relationships and work with people from different areas, wok in cross functional teams, solve business problesChallenges, handling multiple tasks at one time ( wrote everything down and priotized things) , work n cross functional teams( talk about tht ), understand the problem of the customer ( try to get a good understanding before you meet them, then ty to understand theie main problem that they are trying to solve and then work around that )Schuck, Product owner, industry analysis, develop relationships with end users, Government agencies, engineering firms, take part in pricing and bidding, do analysis to calculate the market size and if we should invest in the Indian market.Challengesfirst to understand the products and the market, from where to get information and work with people to get a better perspective

Page 16: Qna for Interviews

the most challenging was to wok with govt people and engineering firms that were not very open to international companies that did not have a presence in the indian market. We had to sell them on the overall cost to operate, the service we can provide and competitive pricing. And had to develop good relations with them, be friendlyEvalueserveGot a great experience of working on sustainability, see what factors are important to investors and stakeholders when we think about sustinabailty, in terms of social, economic and environmental factorsAlso financial skills, by working with asset managers and value companies, work on complex financial models .McKinsey3 types of work

1) Work on day to day tasks- such as work with consultantsChallenges Mckinsey has a very steep learning curve so initial 4-5 months were challenging as I had to develop ad advanced skills in excel and powerpoint and work on creating models and presentataions thatwould be used by partners of the firm. Had to spend a lot of time out of normal hours to gain such skills, go through training programs, enroll on my own and continously keep improving . Working with senior people such as Partners and directors of the company was also challenging as you wok on a lot of ambiguous projects with such high people. As they normally do not have a lot of time to wok with you and will give you limited information to help solve th ings for them. You need to understand the big picture, put yourself in their shoes , consult people who have experience of working on such projects and with such people, then present the analysis and list out your assumptions carefully. Also do more analysis if required that might be helpful for the person. Example, if someone is looking for industry analysis just top level, because they are looking for growth strategies, then do a more detailed analysis and give a recommendation from your side.

Work with different people or how to work in cross functional teamsChallenges in cross functional teams

- IT can be difficult for team members to prioritize their tasks- People might be reluctant to take on additional task and work as required in such teams- Team members might not be open to new ideas as there might not be a defined leader in

the team.

How to work in such teams1- Set objectives – Set a goal for your team, objectives and why it has been setup

Can

Communicate business language to people not having that backgroundAbility to take something thing that I don’t know and finish that, work on ambiguous projectsAttitude to solve problemsAbility to make connections and develop good relationships with peopleExperience in the indian industy, india is huge in coal and natural gas, can expand , understand all the areas in the indian market, understand and connections with engineering firms etc.Cross functional teamsUnderstand the impact on the business

Corporate Finance-Corporate Finance

I want to understand businesses, use financial and analytical skills to help company make the right decisions to add value to the company.

Start out as a financial analyst

A financial analyst's job is to analyze and determine financial needs and analyzing the company's budget. They may be researching possible acquisitions and the benefits of the acquisitions. They can analyze their competitors to try to stay ahead or catch up to the level of business that the competitor is doing. They are responsible for marketing the "market price" of the company. Generally, analysts are assigned to even more specific functions such as finding funding to generate capital for a project. They may be assigned to set targets for profits and sales or to evaluate future performance so that management can make informed business decisions.

And then move into

Corporate Development and Strategic Planning in which you become an expert on evaluating companies to acquire or merge with

Page 18: Qna for Interviews

Or lead business units

The pluses of working in corporate finance are that you are the ones determining the direction of the company. You interact with high powered executives to help make important decisions.

Finance and accounting jobs require strong analytical and quantitative skills. If you have a knack for using

numbers to understand patterns that influence business, you'll be of great value to your employer. If you

can't crunch and analyze numbers, this isn't going to be the right job for you. You should also enjoy and

excel at solving problems and be able to think critically about the numbers you're working with.

That includes reading industry and business publications to understand market conditions, economic

forecasts, and trends. Finance professionals need to look at external factors that could potentially help or

hurt profitability. This may be the career for you if you can effectively evaluate business scenarios and

recommend a course of action based on quantitative research

Working in Corporate Finance means working for a corporation or company to help it raise money to continue operating, expand business, takeover an existing business, manage existing money on hand and provide strategy and advice on how to continue to expand business. In the context of this article, we are not talking about Corporate Finance in terms of a third party helping a private company raise funds. Corporate finance in those terms is the responsibility of an Investment Bank. Top investment firms include JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Smith Barney. Corporate finance in this article is referring to the corporate finance within a private company.

A person working in corporate finance has the goal of increasing the value of the company by carrying out any of the functions listed above.
