Issues of aesthetics, environmental context, and social context are aspects that can influence the adoption and the use of mobile medical devices by patients

vs.

Mobile medical devices are growing in popularity as the trend towards moving healthcare out of clinical settings grows worldwide, and there are opportunities to learn from devices that are currently being used by patients. Inspired by third wave HCI research that focuses on the use of technology outside the workplace, theories on the importance of context and affective experience in the adoption of and reliance on these medical technologies is being explored, as these devices are used by patients on their own bodies, affecting their own personal health and safety. This research project intends to explore these relationships through various situated qualitative studies in order to inform the design and evaluation of future mobile medical devices.
