Volunteers needed for Children’s Liturgy of the

Word We are still in need of volunteers to lead Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 9:15 Children’s Mass. We are looking to build a team that can co-lead sessions once or twice a month. If you are eager to be involved in the community, but can’t make a commitment for every Sunday—this is the opportunity for you.

A BIG THANK YOU FROM THE FAITH FORMATION TEAM This Year’s Faith Formation All Saints Day Celebration was beautiful and full of creativity.

Our children boldly brought the faith and inspiration of our Saints to life.

It was fascinating to see the children’s imaginative emphasis on the saintly virtues of faith, hope, justice and charity—We looked to learn from those who have come before us,

so that we might better seek our own path of growing in closeness to God.

Thank you to all who supported the event!

November Canned Food Drive Competition

In conjunction with Bitten Falge Outreach Ministry, Faith Formation will be leading the November Canned Food Drive.

In this season of thanksgiving, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect with our children on those within our community who are in need.

All canned food items will be donated to the Monterey Food Bank on Thanksgiving Day at the Annual Turkey Trot! If you are interested in being a part of the Turkey Trot Donation Team please contact the Faith Formation Office!

Always Forward, Never Back

The last verse of today’s Gospel Reading from St. Luke declares, “…and he is not God of the dead, but of the living.” This concept of the “living God” is used by the Lord to emphasize the power and assurance of the Resurrection. This explanation provided by Jesus to the Sadducees appears in all three synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The term “living God” occurs several times in Holy Scripture. In Psalm 84, for example, the psalmist sings “My heart and flesh cry out for the living God,” and later in that same psalm we hear, “O lord of hosts bless the man who trusts in you.” How often do we see the phrase “In God we trust?” — more often than we probably take note. Yet that is the exact message of Jesus to us in this Gospel. Another phrase which may ring familiarly to us is, “Our hope is in the Lord.” Trust and the hope which results from that trust are at the heart of lives of stewardship. It is the “living God,” His covenant with us and His promise to us of everlasting life which allows us to trust Him and to have that hope which strengthens that trust. Having hope in the Lord is what can give our lives meaning. At a World Youth Day in 200,2 St. Pope John Paul II opened his message to the young people gathered by saying, “Trust Christ because Christ trusts you.” Our trust in the Lord provides us hope. His trust in us fortifies us to be good stewards.

Docent Corner

When they picked a patron saint for the Carmel Mission, they could not have made a better choice. The statue of St. Charles Borroméo sits high on top of the Reredos of the main altar. He was the son of the Count of Arona and Margarita de' Medici and was born in northern Italy in 1538. When he was about 12 years old, his uncle resigned as the Abbot of Sts. Gratinian and Felinus Abbey and Carlo became the new Abbot. Later, he studied civil and canon law at Pavia and obtained his doctoral degree. A year later another uncle, Cardinal Angelo de' Medici, was raised to the pontificate as Pius IV. Borroméo became, at the age of 22, practically the leading statesman of the papal court as the Secretary of State and was designated a Cardinal. Soon after, he became the Archbishop of Milan. He was a very skillful papal diplomat and politician. He was instrumental in completing the final deliberations of the Council of Trent which determined Church doctrines in response to the Protestant reformation. He was ordained a priest in 1563 at the age of 25. After some additional service in Rome, he devoted himself to reforming the Milan diocese which had not had the Archbishop in residence in 80 years. He proved to be a great reformer of the local church and was instrumental in guiding the Milanese people through the great plagues in 1576. He established seminaries, colleges and communities for the education of the clergy. He died in 1584 at age 46. The Borroméo family is still well known in Milan and St. Charles is buried in the crypt of the Milan Cathedral. He became a Cardinal, then a Bishop and then, finally, a priest. Usually, you ascend the hierarchy of the Church in the opposite order! This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

On Sunday, November 6, our 40 Day

Campaign will close with a special prayer vigil lead by Bishop Garcia.

Join us in front of Planned Parenthood at 625 Hilby, Seaside from 7 to 8 p.m.

New Book Club Selection

The Carmel Mission Book Club invites you to join the ongoing discussion on

The Complete Stories, Flannery O’Connor.

Winner of the National Book Award, this book firmly reveals Flannery O’Connor as “a lively, penetrating talent who has gives us some of the most powerful fiction of the twentieth century.” (Editor Robert Giroux). Fans include Joyce Carol Oates (“O’Connor’s plainspoken, blunt, cartoonish, Flagrantly melodramatic stories…..in which something happens of irreversible magnitude ….), Thomas Merton, who shared her sense of comedy and deep faith, and Fr Isaiah of the New Camaldi Hermitage, who recommended this book to the club.

The Carmel Mission Book Club meets every Saturday at Mac Mahon Hall at 2pm for discussion and refreshments. The book is free; a goodwill donation is accepted to cover the book and shipping.

Milagros are small religious charms found in the southern United States, Mexico and other areas of Latin America. The word “Milagros” means “miracles”. These small charms, often depicting arms, legs, animals and a wide range of other subjects are attached to altars, shrines, crosses and statues. The use of Milagros can be an act of devotion or asking a favor of a Saint. For example, a heart might represent ideas as diverse as a heart condition, a romance or any number of interpretations. Milagros are also carried for protection.
