The Parable of the Lost DucklingPr. Larry E. Thomas

It was a Monday morning in May. The sky was blue, the sun was shining. A perfect spring day. My wife Ann and I were in downtown Bellevue with a little time on our hands. We decided to take a walk around the downtown Bellevue Park.

The City of Bellevue Parks web site perfectly describes this beautiful city park: A 20-acre oasis of green in the heart of Bellevue defines this elegant centerpiece of the Bellevue Parks System. A one-half mile promenade, bordered by a double row of shade trees, and a stepped canal, brings one to the 240-foot wide waterfall that cascades into a reflecting pond.

We parked our car and started walk-ing the promenade. We walked and talked as the buzz of lawnmowers hummed in the background. Walking by the pond, we saw a mother duck and her ducklings waddle out of the pond onto the grass leaving one duckling behind. Momma and the kids walked, waddled and wandered more or less in line, cute as can be. Standing, watching, we wondered about the stray duckling, the lost duckling, the left be-hind duckling.

We looked to our left and the stray duckling was heading across the pond in the opposite

direction of momma and the flock. Instantly I thought of the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15. Which of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost? Curious, I wondered to myself: How many ducklings walked out of that pond? I looked to my right and started counting ducklings. Sure enough, there were nine; nine ducklings, one momma and one

stray duckling. Just like the parable; well, almost.

We stayed put. Watching. Waiting. Won-dering. Another walker had seen what we had seen and had stopped and stationed herself along the concrete edge of the pond, monitoring the movements of the once stray, now, no-doubt-about-it lost duckling. We watched and I wondered: Does the stray duckling know it’s lost? Is it running away? Has momma missed

her lost duckling? Have the siblings missed their sibling? How come momma isn’t look-ing for her lost duckling? When is this prodi-gal duckling going to come to its senses, turn around and head for momma and its siblings? (Okay, alright, at the time, I didn’t think of all of these questions, but I thought of a couple of them…)

So, here’s what happened: Nothing. Nothing happened. Momma didn’t come looking for her lost duck. The lost duck did not come to its senses and return to the flock. There was no shepherd coming to rescue the lost sheep; I mean the lost duckling. There was no family reunion. No party. The woman monitoring the lost duckling drifting along the concrete edge of the pond, walked away. We walked away. I realized that the happy ending, the lost being found, and the family reunion we were hop-ing for wasn’t happening. At least not while we were standing there, waiting.

For every one of us who have found our way, who know the way home, and don’t get lost, there are lost sheep and stray ducklings who are on their own, toughing it out, cruising along the edges, far from home. Some are here; some are there; some live around the corner; some live around the world.

Sometimes there is nothing I can do. Sometimes I can’t fix it. Sometimes I can’t make it better. Sometimes I’m too busy to help. Sometimes I’m not paying attention. Sometimes I am clueless that others are lost and waiting and wondering if anyone is missing them; if anyone knows.

Sometimes there is something I can do and sometimes there’s a lot I can do. At my best, at my most alert and most aware, I am paying attention and doing what I can for the least, the little and the lost. The church, the body of Christ, the you and me who are individually members of the body of Christ, are called and sent to make a difference; to look, to listen, to seek, to find. To know.

Jesus said: I tell you, there will be more joy in heav-en over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

Pastor Larry & Ann Thomas will be in RwandaJune 20 to July 18, 2007

As many of you know, our July 2006 trip to Rwanda was a life changing experience. After re-turning to Issaquah, I came to see that there were three things I felt I needed to do as a result of our time in Rwanda. 1) Figure out how to integrate my Rwanda experiences in my daily life. 2) Sort out how my Rwanda learnings would impact my pastoral ministry here in Issaquah, and, 3) Dis-cern what was next for me, for us, and Rwanda.

Over the course of the last ten months, I have been working on these three concerns. As Ann and I prayed and spoke about these things, we fi-nally sensed what to do. We each asked for some time off without pay in the summer of 2007 so we could spend four weeks in Rwanda. We will leave June 20 and return on July 18. Our hope is to listen, learn, and serve. We will spend ap-proximately two weeks working with African Evangelical Enterprise and two weeks working with Rev. Joseph and Esther Nyamutera and their Mercy Ministries Reconciliation Team. We also hope to make contact and spend time with the leadership team of the Lutheran Church in Rwanda. We are grateful for your support and in-terest. Please pray for us and our hosts and part-ners in ministry at AEE and Mercy Ministries. We are grateful for this opportunity to return to Rwanda and be of service. Pr. Larry and Ann Thomas

In an Emergency . . . OSLC Pastors Can be Reached by Cell Phone

It's summer time. We come, we go. Mission trips, travel, vacations, get-aways. Sometimes office hours are limited during the high tem-perature summer days. This summer, if you are unable to reach staff members at the church office, please feel free to contact Pastor Larry Thomas at home or on his cell phone. (Note: Pastor Thomas will be out of the country in Rwanda June 20 to July 18 and will not be available. During his absence a pastor’s cell phone number for emergency contact will be on the church voice mail.) Remember: there will be times when you will reach voice mail rather than Pastor Larry or another pastor. When that occurs, every effort will be made to return your call as soon as possible. Here are Pastor Larry’s phone numbers: [home phone]: (425) 391-7990 and [cell phone]: (425) 802-1212

Praying the Lord's Prayer

Beginning Holy Trinity Sunday, June 3, will pray the “traditional” version of the Lord’s Prayer on Sunday mornings. We will continue this practice through Christ the King Sunday, November 25, 2007. On the First Sunday in Advent (December 2, 2007), we will resume praying the “ecumenical” version of the Lord’s Prayer. It has been our practice to pray both versions of the Lord’s Prayer over the course of a year. Approximately six months praying one version, and then, six months praying the other.

The Gospel According to The SimpsonsThe Saturday Morning Men’s Study Group June 16, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.Pastor Thomas is leading the study/fellowship group for OSLC men. The focus of the study is the book, The Gospel According to The Simpsons: The Spiritual Life of the World’s Most Animated Family by Mark I. Pinsky. Join us for a morn-ing beverage and good conversation of this delightful book. We’ll read and discuss chapter four – “The Evangelical Next Door: If Everyone Were like Ned Flanders, There’d Be No Need For Heaven” at our June 16 meet. We meet from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at OSLC in the library. And, in addition to discussing the chapter, we will view a relevant episode of “The Simpsons.”

DOH!

OSLC Book ClubBe Ready . . . It's Almost Here! What’s almost here? Summer, of course. And that means lazy days, a slower pace, and time to relax with a good book. The OSLC Book Club invites you to include Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner on your list of ‘must read’ books this summer. It's a fascinating story about growing up in Afghanistan, family love, a violent society and one man's quest for peace of mind. We’ll be meeting in September to share our thoughts on The Kite Runner. For more information contact Sherry Kiefel, (425) 392-1849.

Habitat for HumanityThe Snoqualmie Ridge Thrivent/Habitat house is making great progress. During the month of April and early May, we have been digging dirt and setting concrete forms and tying iron (that's the hard work). Over the last few weeks of May we will start laying floor joists (that's the fun part).

Those that have been working at the Snoqualmie site for any of the last four Saturdays can attest it never seems to rain (it must be a Lutheran thing)! These builds create lots of rewarding experiences and it is fun to participate and help others. The Habitat staff is great and no experience is necessary for these builds! Join in, bring lunch and help whenever you are able (not just Saturday’s).

OSLC has exclusively signed up to provide build crews for Habitat builds on four Saturday’s. The dates are: June 9; July 21; August 11 and September 8. Please mark these dates on your calendar and come out and join others from OSLC in assisting for these days of sharing and fun. For more information or directions please contact Gary Kneepkens at (425) 313-8853 or [email protected]. As OSLC's congre-gational build dates get closer, we will have additional information, but in the meantime please consider coming out and helping out anytime you are able.

OSLC Annual ReportsAvailable inthe NarthexThroughout the past year, OSLC committees have been hard at work beautifying our build-ing, weeding our gardens, providing food for those in need, spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, inviting people to OSLC, prepar-ing the operating budget and overseeing its use, reaching out to others all over the globe and providing us fellowship opportunities within our worshipping community.

Members of the OSLC council and committee chairs have diligently prepared reports of the activities that their committees have done this past year. It is important that we (as members and friends of OSLC) read and keep ourselves aware of the hard work of the committees within this ministry. It keeps those that are working on committees accountable to the members they serve. OSLC staff members and OSL Preschool have also prepared reports that are included. Stop by the table in the narthex and pick up a copy of the 2006/2007 OSLC Annual Report.

I think you’ll enjoy what you read. Also included in this report is the 2007/2008 pro-posed budget. This is an excellent time to make yourself aware of what your Council and Finance Committee is proposing for the coming year. The Annual Meeting of the Congregation to vote on this proposed budget takes place on June 17 beginning at 9:45 a.m. Janet Heck, Parish Administrator

OSLC Volunteer OpportunityIssaquah Meal Program

We have a great service opportunity at OSLC. The Issaquah Meal Program is an 18 year-old program which is a collaboration of mul-tiple church and community groups in and around the Issaquah area Monday through Friday each week. OSLC members and friends prepare and serve dinner the 2nd Tuesday each month at the downtown firehouse com-munity room. Volunteers for each monthly group choose, shopping or food preparation for the dinner. Starting time begins 5:00 p.m. with dinner to be served at 5:30 p.m. On site volunteer time is approximately 1 ½ hours.

This is an Issaquah community service project that puts a smile on your face and joy in your heart!

I am in need of dinner volunteers for the meals for the summer months: July, August and into the month of September. The meal dinner dates that help is needed are: July 10, August 14, and September 11. To volunteer contact Robin Timmerman at (425) 369-6138 or [email protected].

Second AnnualHarvest Festival Craft FairNov. 3, 200710:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.Now is the time to start planning and work-ing on your arts and crafts projects. If you stamp, sew, paint, quilt, cross stitch, scrap-book, crochet, knit, do pottery, photography, woodworking, drawing, or other arts and crafts, your contributions will be a delight to have. These are just a few suggestions to get your mind thinking. Summer is also the time to enjoy activities with your kids. We will be having a “kids craft table” and invite all kids to make things they enjoy. Some items may be pressed flower bookmarks or cards, stepping stones for the garden or scented oils and bath salts.

All chefs and pastry chefs, start planning your contributions as well. Now is the time to start thinking about canning – fruits, veg-etables and jams.

Save your books and collectibles, we’ll have a place for them also. Look for a list of sugges-tions after services on Sundays. Samples will also be displayed. We will also be planning to raffle themed baskets. If you wish to contrib-ute to these please contact Becky Mogensen at (425) 413-8429 or Janette Singley-Wray at (425) 313-9424.

OSLC LibraryAttention Parents & Kids!As you well know, summer vacation is just around the corner and hours of free time await your little ones. Maybe your child is just beginning to read and you would welcome a chance for him to keep practicing without long months to lose his skills. Maybe she is already an avid reader and is constantly needing more good stories. Remember your OSLC library this summer! We have so many early reader books we don’t have room for them all and would welcome some young folks who are just beginning to know the joy of reading to take some home. Here are a few new ones: Amelia Bedelia, Bookworm or Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia - both by Herman ParishWild Cats - by Mary BattenHungry, Hungry Sharks! - by Joanna ColePal the Pony; Pal Saves the Day - by R.
