FROM THE PASTOFROM THE PASTOFROM THE PASTOFROM THE PASTORRRR

Across Generations

One generation shall laud your works to another, and

shall declare your mighty acts.

– Psalm 145:4

At Gethsemane, we value everyone and that includes

people of all ages. We know that older people have a

great deal to offer like wisdom, life experiences, and

patience, and our youngest people have energy,

wonder, and enthusiasm to share. Everyone has

something to learn from everyone else. And yet we

don’t often have quality time to share those things

with each other.

The model of Christian learning and Sunday School

that most of us have grown up with has people

segregated by age. This might be useful in some ways,

but in others it can be lacking. Where can our younger

people hear stories that our older people share?

Where can young parents learn from the wisdom of

middle aged parents? When can our older generations

hear about the lives of our teenagers?

Church is one of the last places where people of all

generations are together in one place. We should take

advantage of that gift that God has given us. Faith is

something that should be shared across generations.

We have an opportunity (and an obligation) to share

our faith with younger people.

When our parents and teachers got together in the

summer to review our education program, one

priority that we agreed on was “building a close

community with young people of many ages and with

adults across generations”. But when would we do it?

Could we handle another program. The reality is, we

need to do that work (and fun) when most of our

people are here together. And that time is Sunday

morning.

On November 15, we will have our first opportunity to

share our faith together in an education opportunity

called GIFT (Generations In Faith Together). This is a

time where people of all generations can come

together to share with one another, learn about

scripture, and bless one another with our wisdom and

enthusiasm.

We will gather together in the Great Hall during the

regular 10:45 education hour after worship. We’ll get

into groups that intentionally include all generations

(hosted by our families with children) we’ll share, talk,

pray, connect our story with God’s story, and create

something together.

Even if you don’t usually participate in our Sunday

education opportunities, please come join in on

November 15th, give it a try and get to know other

people, young and old!

Outreach – Inviting Others

The Outreach Team is actively working to enhance our

program of inviting our friends and neighbors to join

Gethsemane in achieving our vision.

We are discussing Outreach during the Nov. 1 and

Nov. 8 education hours. We will talk about the best

ways for Gethsemane members to approach the topic

of inviting others to Gethsemane and we will provide

tools to make us more effective in this important

activity.

Personal invitations are the most effective ways to get

people to join us in worship and church activities. We

do great work here at Gethsemane and God calls us to

share these opportunities with others!

Also, the new Outreach Team could use a couple

additional members. If you would like to join us,

please contact Bill Darlage.

If you have been visiting Gethsemane, welcome! We

will have a new member class later this year. We have

two classes each year. You can contact Pr. June if you

would like to become a member. In the mean time,

consider yourself completely at home!

NOV. 15

Highlights of Council Meeting – October 15, 2015

A copy of the Council minutes and Financial Report is posted in Atrium Way.

PLEASE READ BUT LEAVE POSTED. Take home copies (minus attachments) are available

at the Welcome Desk in the narthex.

PASTOR’S REPORT

Reformation, 10/25/15, will be celebrated with a potluck and traditional jello

contest.

Pastor June recently attended a “Killing Sunday School” conference. With

input from church families, an intergenerational all church Sunday School

event is being planned for 11/15/15.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Optimal timing for this year’s Stewardship campaign was discussed.

Considerations are being given to tradition, other fundraising appeals,

budgetary planning, the church calendar, congregational meetings, and giving

statements. Pastor June and Paula Sauer will determine the best time to

proceed.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Total expenses were lower than expected largely due to Payroll. Contributions

for September were also lower than budgeted which resulted in a net deficit

for the month. Again, contributions should remain a focus and Council should

continue to review and determine areas of sustainable income.

MINISTRY TEAMS/COMMITTEE REPORTS

Play and Learn

• MOTION: (M. Murphy, G. Rader) to approve the FY2016 Play

and Learn Budget. Carried

• MOTION: (M. Murphy, C. Jessie) that in future budgets careful

consideration be given to increasing salaries, particularly those

in the lower range. Carried.

• Council was advised of the Play & Learn Coupon Book Fundraiser

from November 2-16 in support of playground updates in the

spring.

Swahili Ministry

• The IYK budget is currently showing a deficit for the 2/1/15-

1/31/16 fiscal year due in large part to a significant health

insurance cost increase. Imma Lyatuu shared with Council their

short and long term plans for deficit recovery.

Gethsemane’s Justice Ministry

Our Justice Ministry season is getting off to a good start at Gethsemane! We

had 32 Gethsemane members at our listening meeting on Sunday, Oct. 11. The

listening meeting is the first step in the B.R.E.A.D. process. Congregations

gather and hear about the issues that are affecting people’s lives. These topics

and the topics from other B.R.E.A.D. member churches are collected and the

three top items are selected and presented with personal stories. We then get

an opportunity to vote on which topic will be researched which will finally lead

to an issue which will be put forward at the Nehemiah Action in May. The

voting will take place at the Annual Assembly on Monday, Nov. 16, at Christ the

King Catholic Church on Livingston Ave. at 7pm. If you are interested in going

(we usually have a carpool) just let Pr. June know

([email protected]). In exciting Justice news, the Addiction, Drug

and Mental Health board approved $200,000 to form an accredited Club House

for ongoing care for people with mental illness in Columbus. This was exactly

the issue which was requested at the 2014 Nehemiah Action! B.R.E.A.D. rises!
