Afterwork Masterworks, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s popular series of midweek rush-hour performances, features CSO concerts in a casual, 90-minute format with no intermission and a free postconcert wine reception, where concertgoers can mingle and partake in a Q&A with guest artists and CSO musicians. This first concert of the series this season features Bernard Labadie, a Baroque music specialist, conducts an all-Handel program featuring the famous Water Music suites. Organist Richard Paré from Quebec City's legendary Les Violons du Roy is featured in Handel’s Organ Concertos Nos. 1. The Water Music Suites No. 1 and 2 open and close the program.

Bernard Labadie conducts an all-Handel program on four subscription nights. Organist Richard Paré is featured in Handel’s Organ Concertos Nos. 1 and 4; closing the program is Handel's Water Music, a particularly bright and festive piece of music. Water Music has remained Handel’s most popular instrumental work for almost three centuries.

This installment of the popular CSO Family Matinee series for families with children ages 5-9 explores the theme Music Comes Alive! Duain Wolfe, director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, conducts members of the CSO and guest artists from DanceWorks Chicago in a unique program that builds the orchestra section by section, starting with Fry’s Paradigm for percussion, Copland’s majestic Fanfare for the Common Man for brass, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik for strings and Nielsen’s Wind Quintet for the woodwinds. The concert culminates with Britten’s ever-popular Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.

The Chicago Symphony continues to celebrate the centennial of the 1911/12 era with a French-inspired program featuring Ravel’s Suite No. 2 from Daphnis and Chloe, which premiered in 1911, and Roussel’s The Spider’s Feast, which was written in 1912. French conductor Stéphane Denève makes his CSO debut with violinist Leonidas Kavakos as soloist for Prokofiev’s graceful Second Violin Concerto.

Jazz guitar innovator and composer John Scofield performs his signature fusion of jazz, funk and R&B joined by pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Ben Street and drummer Greg Hutcherson. Scofield, who gained prominence as a guitarist and composer during his time with Miles Davis from 1982–1985, is an acclaimed leader and collaborator with some of today’s top artists, including Charlie Haden, Mavis Staples and Jack DeJohnette. Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, son of the legendary John Coltrane, makes his debut as a leader of his own quartet at Symphony Center.

Conductor Semyon Bychkov returns to Symphony Center to lead the CSO in two performances of Strauss’ magnificent tone poem, Ein Heldenleben, a piece that received its U.S. premiere by the CSO in 1900. The score portrays all the overwhelming vulgarity and self-confidence that surrounded him at the turn of the last century, a time of rapid change. These performances also feature the luminous Labèque sisters, Katia and Marielle, who perform Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos, a tuneful, exuberant work with hints of inspiration from the Balinese gamelan.

The CSO’s acclaimed Beyond the Score series continues in 2011/12 with new explorations of three pieces, revealing the story behind great musical works with a live audiovisual presentation and dramatized commentary provided by creative director Gerard McBurney. This season begins with Semyon Bychkov leading Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben—an outrageously exuberant, exaggerated and tongue-in-cheek self-portrait that highlights the wild social and artistic flux of 19th century. Ein Heldenleben was the subject of the very first Beyond the Score concert in 2005. Since then, the production has been completely revised; these presentations mark the first Chicago showing of the revised version.

Once Upon a Symphony Saturday, November 19, 2011, 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. The Ugly Duckling
Program to include music by Copland, Respighi, Saint-Saëns and J. Strauss, Jr.

Conceived by Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, Once Upon a Symphony is the newest contribution to the CSO’s programming for families and young audiences. This season’s two concerts are designed for children ages 3-5, incorporating a performance by a small ensemble of CSO musicians and a storyteller with visual elements including puppets and props to give young children a playful introduction to music. Preconcert activities, an integral part of the Once Upon a Symphony experience, begin 45 minutes before each concert (9:15 and 11:00 a.m., respectively). A second program, Jack and the Beanstalk, will be presented in March 2012. Once Upon a Symphony is presented in collaboration with the Chicago Children’s Theatre.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s popular Friday Night at the Movies series, which brings movies to life as the CSO performs the score live, begins with the universally acclaimed movie musical, West Side Story. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the film was winner of 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. David Newman conducts the CSO in Leonard Bernstein’s electrifying score, including memorable songs with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, as the newly remastered film is shown in high definition with the original vocals and dialog intact. Symphony Center Presents Saturday, November 26, 2011, 3 p.m. Special Concert Vienna Boys’ Choir Tickets: $22–$83 Single tickets on sale August 12. An annual Thanksgiving-weekend delight, the Vienna Boys’ Choir returns to Chicago for a joyful performance to herald the holiday season. Founded more than 500 years ago, the beloved choir has worked with such musical luminaries as Mozart, Gluck and Bruckner, and it once counted Franz Schubert as one of its boy singers. Today’s ensemble consists of 100 choristers between the ages of 10 and 14 who tour throughout Europe, Asia and North America and perform more than 300 concerts in front of nearly half a million people each year.
