Happy April, everyone. Ive always heard the saying that April showers bring May flowers. As we enter this next full month of racing, Im hoping that old wives tale will be proven false. We certainly got a break with winter and from those frigid March races we are so used to. For the most part, the season has started off pretty nice, and we hope that it stays that way.
Ive also enjoyed the early season race participation. Tomahawk had a huge Loretta Lynn Qualifier turnout, as did the NEOC season opener hare scramble, which hosted close to 1,000 riders at that two-day event. The local races have also seen fairly good rider turnouts for March. As we venture into warmer temperatures, I can only image that things will pick up rather nicely.
This issue gets us back on schedule, so you can expect to see a MRA every u p c o m i n g month. We have changed our format a bit, hoping to feature more racer interviews and images, and utilizing less space for results. We have built
a page on our website where you can enjoy those any day of the week plus lots of other cool stuff like race schedules, industry links and updates, and of course our photo page

As always, Motorama proves to be an exciting start to our racing season here in the District 6 region. Now in its 34th year, the show continues to grow and to offer a weekend full of excitement to not only the racers of the area but to all who are true motorsports fans. The event mainlines with two days of arenacross-style racing but also offers an industry vendor show and go-cart and quarter midget racing, including RC cars. There are show cars and beauty pageants and robot conflict, and the list goes on and on.
This year, just over 350 entries graced the arenacross floor, with hundreds more participating in other competition events on the weekend. All told, racers from over 30 states participated in this weekends racing.
As far as the arenacross racing goes, both Saturday and Sunday are scored as two separate events.
Classes are offered for both amateurs and experts, with the participants being anywhere from 4 to 50 years old.
Racing started off on Saturday afternoon with the 4 Wheel Open C class leading the charge. Heat races are run to determine qualifying for the evenings main events. Our first main event champion of the weekend would be Josh Lamparter, taking the win on Saturday night while also racing to a third-place finish in Sundays racing action. Some top performers at the event would be young Cory Carsten, who won both the Junior Mini and 85 (12-15) mains. Corys father, Barry, has been a longtime participant here who has won many main events on the Motorama floor.
Other multi-class winners included the likes of Carson Cahill in the 50cc bike divisions and Cory Passieu both in 50 and 65cc racing, with Grant Landis winning both
days racing in the 50cc 4 wheel divisions.In amateur competition, Josh Villarreal would take
home a few wins in 250 and Open B racing, and Michael Machuski would win both days of 200 Two Stroke/300 Four Stroke quad racing action.
TJ Phillips would steal the show in the expert bike classes, winning three out of the four premiere divisions on the weekend with longtime Motorama veterans Casey Clark and Clint Johnson splitting the 25 plus A wins. In expert quad racing, Casey Martin would travel from Frenchburg, KY, to win three of four mains in his first Motorama attempt with local fast guy Thomas Fink clinching the fourth division.

A few years have gone by since Ive been back covering races, and Ive witnessed a number of local racers go from 50s the whole way through and into the pro ranks. Matter of fact, Ive been around so long now that there are even a couple of guys that I remember being on 80s that have gone pro and by now their kids are on 85s too.
Whew, better check for the gray. Anyhow, one of this months MRA Heroes falls into that category. Thirteen-year-old Cory Carsten has begun to carve a name for himself here on the local scene just as his dad, Barry, did many years ago. Yeah, Barry went pro and still races locally and at some bigger events, and Barry has always been a role model or a hero in my eyes. A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to be around for the next generation of Carstens to fill that spot. A very little Cory Carsten racing his KTM 50 with his trademark Mohawk atop his helmet, and all you could do is wonder, does the kid have the same stuff as the old man? Fast forward to present, and I found myself taking more Carsten podium photos at Motorama, only this time it was Cory sweeping the weekends racing in both of his classes. This time it was his beaming smile when the helmet came off and he got to address the crowd. This time, or should I say its his time, to step up and be the Hero, just like his dad has for so many years. And as Im a betting man, Im betting that young Carsten will be a Hero of our sport for many years to come. So keep your eye on this young racer from Jersey, and keep your other eye watching too, because who knows, you just might be our next MRA Hero.

Ive attended quite a few of these awards banquets over the years, but Id have to say that this was one of the best Ive seen from the District 6 Sports Association. The night ran smoothly and quickly as the association celebrated 50 years of riding. The awards were very classy, and as always, AMA District 6 continues to pump out the champions.
Not only were district awards given, but many were noticed for their achievements on the national stage. Every year we have a few individuals who shine from our region of the country, but this year seemed to be extra special.
We had an AMA Horizon Award winner and an Athlete of the Year. We had multiple flat track national champions. Shayna Texter became the first woman ever to win a pro flat track final. We had a young trials national champion that ended a 54-year winning streak. We had Off-Road Organizer of the Year in a local club, and we had a lot of smiling faces that took home the local gold right here in their own backyards.

In February, I got a call from longtime race promoter Jonathan Beasley of Budds Creek Motocross. Jonathan was both very happy and just a little sad as he relayed his message to me that day. He had just left the courthouse in Maryland after finalizing a Historic Trust for his world-renowned racetrack in Leonardtown, MD. He also shared with me that he would be retiring from the sport.
What does this mean, I asked Jonathan as he began to share the direction in which everyone was headed.
Budds Creek is home to both amateur and professional racing events and has been for as long as I can remember. Each year the track plays host to an AMA National Motocross thats traditionally held on Fathers Day. A few years ago the Motocross of Nations was held here, the worlds largest and most prestigious event in our sport, plus Budds holds Loretta Lynn Qualifiers and, of course, is home to local racing series like MAMA and the MDRA. It is also the only track located geographically in AMA District 7.
The Historic Trust guarantees that Budds Creek will always be a motocross racing facility, that it cant be developed or shut down by a developer or new home owner that may eventually move into the area. As long as motocross racing is a sport in our country, it will have a home at Budds Creek.
The additional news was that track owner Beasley, after decades of service to our sport, is going to hang up his hat. Its time for a new generation to take the reins and breathe some new life into the facility. Effective immediately, Beasleys nephew, Ryan Valdez, is the new president of the board. Ryan will oversee day to day operations and already has some new offerings at the track.
In addition to the 2012 racing schedule beginning in March, Budds will hold open practices the first Saturday and Sunday of each weekend, complete with an ambulance and a full staff of flaggers. Cost will be $40 per day or $75 for the weekend. The cost to spectators is $5 a day or $8 for both days. For now, its business as usual as the season gets off to a roaring start. Advance tickets for this years AMA National are already available on their website at www.buddscreek.com.
As far as Jonathan Beasley goes, what will become of him? Jonathan will still be around the track helping in the pits and hanging out with the racers; you dont spend the amount of effort and time that he has and walk away that easily. Jonathan, we thank you for your dedication to the sport and for making Budds a permanent part of motocross racing history.

Season 5, Round # 1, CCFG, March 10 & 11, 2012: Each year we are nervous and uncertain about what the opening round will bring. This year was no different. Lots of opinions and speculation were being tossed about, mostly, I thought, just to get me freaked out because my friends think its funny to push my panic button. With the number 966 being Jays final tally for the weekend, I had two thoughts cross my mind at the same time. They were Build it, and they will come, then simultaneously Be careful what you wish for cause you just might get it.
Im at a loss for words on how to describe the start of this season. In five years we have gone from 450 at our very first NEOC event to almost a 1,000. Is it even possible? Is it even doable? Is it even maintainable? Is it just a fluke? My answers to all these things rattling through my frightened mind right now are to just continue to do what we have always done: put your head down, dig deep, push forward, never look back, and always put the riders first. What happens will happen, but if you know you gave it your all despite all obstacles, then we will have no regrets -- only learning curves and accomplishments. The NEOC was founded by family and good friends, and it continues to grow, so no matter what the outcome of this season will be I am certain of one thing: In the end we will still be standing next to family and friends whether we are at the top of the roller coaster or at the bottom.

As I was coming into the fairgrounds on Friday with my short bus to start getting set up for the weekend, I had to let a little bit of a crazy laugh out when I saw how filled the parking lot was already. I knew what the potential turnout was going to be so it was either laugh or cry. I was greeted at the gate by all of my bicycling buddies waving to me with giant excited smiles. I was home, and there were no worries.
Two by two, the NEOC crew came and punched the clock to start the first of ten long/short weekends of being tortured by what we love. Four by four the NEOC families came to fill the first of ten long/short weekends with dreams and excitement. The moon was so full and so were our hearts.
Saturday officially opened the season with a crisp, cool breeze and a bright, sunny sky. As you all know, there was also a cloud over the weekend with our friend #110 Collin Kearney and his family never far from our thoughts. This race was all about him, knowing that he was racing with us. He even opened his eyes and acknowledged to his parents that he knew it was the first one of the season. By 10 a.m. the lines started and never stopped til Sunday. Our Registration Ladies and gatekeepers
were smack in the middle of a whirlwind. We thank you for being respectful and nice to our staff. The gatekeepers said there was only one crabby pants the whole weekend, and registration had a few frustrated ones, understandably so with the opening season line.
With the absence of our Dan the Man, we had Scooter, Big Phil and a posse of youngins instruct the Tutor Time program. Until he can return, we will do our best to keep the integrity that Dan built this program with.
High Noon was time for our favorite event of the weekend to make us smile and feel that special gentleness brought on by the fresh and new eyes filled with nervous excitement for the unknown, our Plankton of this sport, The Tikes on Bikes. Forty-one little guys from 2 to 6 years old ventured out on their own to begin their off-road journey for the first time. It is an honor and privilege to be part of and witness their very first event and watch them grow as a rider and a person. I also love seeing the pride and joy on the parents faces after setting their baby free to experience something that they love as well. I remember that feeling like it was yesterday; it tears at your heartstrings because its the beginning of letting them go.

They say there is a first time for everything, and this could be the first year ever that Ive attended Sleepy Hollows opener without either a Goretex jacket or heavy duty rain gear. Its been a welcome start to the 2012 season, with mild temperatures and fairly good turnouts at the gates.
The days event kicked off the MDRA 6 Series for 2012 with Sleepy Hollow offering some new track changes for the crowd. Nothing too radical, just a small whoop section here and a couple of doubles there, and we were off to the races so to speak.
The track was kind of sketchy for practice, as temps did drop below freezing overnight, but by moto time things were looking good.
As the norm, we had the regular crowds plus some extras streaming in from NY and NJ to take advantage of our early season racing. It always mixes things up nicely to get things started. There was some great racing action at the Northeast Loretta Lynns area qualifier this past weekend at Tomahawk MX Park in Hedgesville, West Virginia. There was great bar to bar battling in every class and in every moto for the entire weekend. One rider that stood out to me was the #22 of Joey Deneen, the Pennsylvania local boy out of Bedford, Pa.
Deneen was making this qualifier look like it was just another day practicing. Pulling the last gate selection and then pulling away with the holeshot must have boosted his confidence tremen-dously. After that, his day just seemed to get better as it went on.
The injury to his ankle from earlier in the week did not seem to affect him too much. He said, Whenever it started to hurt me, I would ride one footed. That sure gave him some attention to all of the fans watching.
It is a good thing this kid can do it too because during his first moto in Collegeboy, his left foot peg fell off, and he needed the skill to ride like that for most of the race. I hope to see more from this young rider in the near future.

The 4th Annual Delaware Dirt Track Association Awards Banquet was held this past weekend to recognize the achievements of the riders from this past season.
It was a real family affair this year, as brothers, sisters, daughters, fathers and uncles topped the series.
The Price family was well represented, as the youngest, Jonathan Price, won the 55cc division, while brother Georgie Price Jr. topped the 250B and 250 Sportsman classes.
Jay Maher came out on top of the 250 Adult class. His son Sam Maher finished second in the 75cc division as well as fourth in the 150 Youth series.
The father and daughter team of Bob and Melissa Hildebrand fared well, as Bob finished second in the Vintage class, fourth in the Adult 150, while Melissa finished second in the 150 Adult division.
The Campbells, Les and Coleman, also did well, as Les topped the Vintage class while son Coleman finished fourth in the 75cc class.
The Johnson Racing Team also had a fine showing, as father Rick Johnson finished third in the 150 Adult class. His son Jeremy Johnson
topped a tough Open B class in his first season of competition. D.J. Johnson, uncle to Jeremy and brother to Rick, finished fourth in that same Open B series.
McGrane Racing also made a great showing, as Son Logan McGrane finished second in the 55cc class and dad Tom McGrane, who finished second in the Ice Series this winter, took second in the 450 Sportsman, second in the 450 Pro division, and third in the Open A class.
Other big winners included Roy Miller of Roy Built Racing, who captured the 450 Sportsman class and fourth in the 250 Sportsman class.
Tom Majeski also had a good showing, topping the Vet A class, third in the 450 Sportsman and second in the Open A class.
The nights two biggest winners were Melanie Siegel and Mark Miller. Melanie topped the 75 cc and 150 Youth divisions as well as the Youth Track Championship. Mark Miller also fared well as he topped the Open A and 450 Pro classes on his way to his second straight Track Championship aboard the Monster Energy, Delmarva Speed-N-Sport, ONeal, Bell, RK, Roy Built backed Suzuki.

MRA Flat Track Hero Tyler ScottI dont know about you, but Im a big fan of flat track racing. I know its not as popular
in our area as, say, motocross or hare scrambles, but theres just something about that continual rubbing of plastic from one corner to the next until someone grabs the checkered flag on the final lap. I like the fact that you can run just about any bike and be competitive no matter when it was built, and I love the fast action under the lights on a Saturday night.
I remember the first time I saw a very young Tyler Scott at a race. It was in Lampeter, PA, on a Saturday afternoon, and he was out for a practice session. I didnt know it was him at the time, but here comes this little racer out of turn two on his KTM 50 and boy, did he look the part, all geared up in his bright orange KTM gear, and did this kid have form. If he wasnt so low to the ground, he could have been mistaken for a Johnny Lewis or Raun Wood (both racers who have had great success in the pro ranks).
As he passed me by I saw the name Scott on the back and figured he had to be related to Mike Scott of Scott Powersports. Mike has sponsored many champions over the years, and I hear he builds a great bike, so it started to make sense. I watched Tyler battle that night with a young McGrane boy who comes from a long list of champions as well, and I knew right then that the kid had talent.
Tyler went to his amateur nationals later that year and came away with a long list of accomplishments (see interview below) so I thought it only right to name him our first-ever flat track hero. He just sealed the deal too on the very last question of our interview. His goal is to be the smartest kid in his class, and we were talking school, not his race class. Well, the Jimmy Weinert Training Facility was really cool! I was down years ago when it was MX 58, and there was only one track and camping facilities. Now there are three tracks, two figure-eight tracks and one circle track (for corner training). The big track is a supercross-style track with some really cool bowl turns and technical jumps. There is a motocross style track on the other side of the camping area with a lot of turns and whoop sections, but by the end of the day, the straight-a-ways are whooped out too! You definitively get a workout! The third track is the shortest and the smoothest, great for late day riding! There are several cabins and a bath house, as well as water and electric hookups. There is also a laundry house; Im not sure if that was just for the kids attending the camp or not, but Jimmy and his wife were such great hosts I dont think that they would object to anyone using it.
Jimmy has a training program there. Its either a weekly or monthly program. I was told that most of the ones there now are training for Loretta Lynns and will probably stay there until then. There are two Marines that come to help with the conditioning, and when they cant make it, there is another kid there that steps in to crack the whip! There is a hotel about 10 minutes away if you dont want to rough it in one of the cabins, and they give a discounted rate for people riding at the track. Also, the cabins do have heat, small refrigerators, a small table, TV hook-ups and two bunk beds.
Unfortunately, due to a rained out Sunday and 3 to 5 inches of snow expected in northern North Carolina, we didnt get to check out any other tracks on this trip. But, on Sunday, Jimmy took a lap around two of the tracks in the rain and said that he would have two tracks ready to ride by noon on Monday! He stuck around, and we talked with him for well over an hour watching it rain and eating hot dogs. He gave the kids a hard time about respecting their parents and some tips on riding. Also, he told us about some of the kids hes training, we talked about the supercross race
from the night before, and he talked a little about his days in the spotlight! In my opinion, that was probably the highlight of trip! He definitely had us laughing!

Hello fellow motorcycle enthusiasts!It has been a fantastic winter, and spring will have officially started when you read this. This
winter has kept me very busy doing what I love to do, and that is to plan and organize Girls Just Wanna Ride! We will once again be holding the stellar event for any interested female. The event will be held at Happy Ramblers in Hanover, PA, on May 26th.
First, let me tell you how Girls Just Wanna Ride originated. When I first began racing years ago, there were very few other girls racing. I wanted to create an event that brought women together in a noncompetitive and fun atmosphere to learn new and improve existing skills, or even simply to learn how to ride a dirt bike! The first event was in 2007 and has grown every year since then. Planning Girls Just Wanna Ride is a lot of work! When it comes down to the days event and seeing all of the girls who attend and have a great time, then all the hard work is well worth it!
Last years event was extremely successful! With every year, Girls Just Wanna Ride grows and expands! In 2011, we had 50 girls in attendance! The weather was perfect, not too hot and plenty of sunshine! The track was prepped like a race event for each and every lady to enjoy! It was very astonishing to see this event unfold, and it could not have been possible without each and every helper, promoter, sponsor, and attending girl who participated! I am very pleased with the event with 2011, but as the day came to a close, preparations for 2012s event were already taking shape in my mind!
The Girls Just Wanna Ride proceeds sponsored a race at Happy Ramblers, and it went wonderful as well! There were many smiling faces when the pink trophies were awarded to the class winners. Thank you very much to Happy Ramblers for giving Girls Just Wanna Ride a facility to host our event every year!
For 2012, there are new sponsors on board, and as always, there is a new piece of Girls Just Wanna Ride swag added to the huge goody bag each attending girl will be receiving. We are also expecting there to be various sponsors on site, such as Chixs MX and RPM Graphics, to name a few!
The event is open for women of all skill levels. You can expect to learn things such as cornering techniques, body positioning, physical condition, brake and throttle control, proper nutrition and hydration, and games to play on your motorcycle. For the racers, we will discuss during a short session on how to get sponsors.
As always, lunch and beverages are provided for all attending girls and their family. We are very excited for Girls Just Wanna Ride 2012, so mark your calendars for May 26th, ladies! A few years ago, the MAMA racing organization contacted me and asked me if I would come cover their races in MRA. At the time I had only been to a few MAMA races, and all I really new about them was that they were primarily a youth-based racing organization. I am always about promoting as much of our sport as I can, but the biggest problem I had with adding more race coverage was my ability to give them the coverage they deserve. You see, I can only be in one place at a time, and my plate was already full. So, not being one to say no to a challenge, we agreed to do this, and one of my first stops was off to an awards banquet. Not really knowing any of the racers from this group, I was really on a learning mission that night, and I kept hearing one young mans name over and over again, so I decided to interview him for the paper. Charlie Wernig was winning everything that year, so I got hooked up with the family, and we did one of our first MAMA interviews. Turns out that Charlie has a sister, Annie the goose, that also races, and it turns out shes pretty fast in her own rite. I dont know how she got the name the goose, but I do know this: From seeing her ride since then and watching her results, I can tell you she is quite fast. The other thing that Annie is really good at is interviewing all the fast MAMA racers and helping out with MRA. Shes into basketball and active at her church, and shes an all around good kid -- not that shes really a kid anymore, but you know what I mean. So, I thought before we put Annie to work this year interviewing all you hotshot MAMA racers that we would give her credit due for her accomplishments. Annie, thanks for being a part of what we do, and heres to a great season coming your way. A true MRA Hero.

Many of you may be unsure about God altogether. Friends, I want you to consider something the Lord wants you to know, that you can experience Him and hear His voice even if your mind sometimes just cant comprehend the idea of God. You see, in the Bible we see God telling us that we can know his voice and know he is there. Its the Holy Spirit that speaks to our hearts. You are made of three parts: spirit, soul, and body.(1 Thessalonians 5:23)
Its in your spirit that you are able to believe in Jesus and have faith. Its in your spirit that you will hear His voice. We do have to train ourselves to tune in to his voice in our spirit. It is your spirit that gets born again, or changed, when you choose to invite Jesus into your heart.
Its your soul that needs renewed by the word of God (Romans 12:1-2). What the Lord is trying to get you and I to see is that just because your mind struggles with even believing, there is a spirit world or a creator of all of this; its ok because the real you is your Spirit. Just because a thought goes through your head, you dont have to follow it or even consider it. You can throw it out and choose to believe what you see in the Bible or hear in your Spirit. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
First, look at verse 13, and you see that we can know that we dwell in Him, because we have his Spirit. If you are a Christian, then you can relate there are times when you hear promptings or thoughts that are wiser, kinder, and braver than you. Thats the voice of the Holy Spirit.
Second, look at verse 15. It tells us how to get God to dwell in us. Confess Jesus as the Son of God. For the doubter in you realizes that Jesus and His resurrection are very accurately documented and accepted by very credible historians. Jesus did die on a cross, He did come back to life, and he was and is the Son of the creator. The question is what are you going to do with Jesus? Choose to believe and follow Him or let the doubt of your mind keep you from taking steps of Faith. Motocross is a race of faith; there are many unknowns. Is my bike going to stay together? Am I going to make this jump? Will this turn out good or bad for me? Today choose to start the race with Jesus, despite the many unknowns, and if you are already a follower of Jesus, ask yourself if you are holding back because of the unknown?
