These little girls are our “bad foot crew”. They have multiple bouts of laminitis requiring frequent trims. The girls are on Purina WellSolve LS which is a low starch feed for laminitis horses.

Peanut arrived in 2005 from our friends at Blarney Farm Rescue who were forced to close for financial reasons. Peanut was a former 4-H show pony until her hoof issues prevented her from participating any longer. Peanut is one of the most patient little ponies you will ever meet. There is literally not an aggressive bone in this little POA’s (Pony of America) body. While the rest of the horses in this pasture will dance around, push each other, and complain at meal times, Peanut just waits.

Recently, after a conversation with the doctor about her ongoing hoof troubles, we are trying Pergolide for her hooves. Pergolide is the same medication that Shadow is on for her

Cushing’s disease. This medication seems to be making a difference for Peanut as far as her comfort level. Keep your fingers crossed for her continued good results.

Dixie came to Misfit Acres in 2007 and was originally slated to be Cookie’s pasture mate. Tragically, we lost Cookie shortly after Dixie’s arrival. This little pure white mini horse is one of our “talkers”. Little Dixie always has something to say. She has

lovely eyes and knows how to wrap herself right around you heart when she bats those dark eyes at you. Yup, she is a keeper.

Misfit Acres Milestones

Spring 2012 Volume 6 issue 1

Welcome to Spring ! Although the mild winter we have had, the entire winter almost felt like spring. Sure makes it nice for the horses. After all the predictions of how brutal this winter was supposed to be, this winter has been a very welcomed surprise. Even though is has been so nice, we can’t help but wonder what late spring will bring?

This issue of Milestones is full good news for Misfit Acres. We have had many unexpected donations recently which really help with our mission. After you read through the latest happenings, won’t you take a minute and become a supporter of Misfit Acres as well? No donation is ever too small to make a difference.

Welcome to Spring 2012!

Between “Things to Know” and “Donor Spotlight” we have so many things to tell you, we are combining these columns.

We proudly thank the Foley Conservation Fund for their grant of $1000 to Misfit Acres. This was a lovely Christmas Eve morning surprise.

Additionally, we thank the Hugs and Kisses Animal Foundation for their $600 gift to Misfit Acres.

Huge Thanks to the ASPCA for their $2000 grant from their Equine Emergency Hay Fund. Once again they have stepped up to help the Sanctuary Horses of

Misfit Acres.

In January, the Carl & Verna Schmidt Foundation gifted Misfit Acres with a $4000 grant for the ongoing care of the animals. This is the fourth year this foundation has generously contributed to Misfit Acres!

Misfit Acres was the focus of a special mission at the United Methodist Church of Amboy and received $170 from the Sunday school kids. The young people put on a special collection and the adult Sunday classes matched

their efforts. They also collected many, many recycling items for the horses.

Jonathan Elementary School of Chaska did a special recycling drive for Misfit Acres and collected boxes upon

boxes of recycling for the horses. It was indeed a fun day

when Bruce and Paul M. drove up to meet the kids and pick up their recycling. As both men are members of the Elm Creek Cowboys Theater Company, the guys thought it would be fun to dress in their cowboy attire for this trip which

was well received by the students.

Magic has his own sponsor now! June F. has decided she wants to be Magic’s Foster Mom. We are looking forward to the day when she meets this beautiful boy. We are sure they will have a lot to talk about.

We will never forget the individual supporters of Misfit Acres. Recent months have brought in several hundred dollars in donations toward the feeding and care of the horses. Resident’s Corner

As of December, we happily welcome Angie’s Kettle Corn of North Mankato as the newest contributor to our recycling programs. This company saves all their defective kettle corn bags for Misfit Acres recycling programs. Each month, we pick up approximately 1200# of bags on a daily basis which we in turn box up and ship to our recycler with all funds coming back to Misfit Acres. We are looking forward to a long relationship with this fine company.

Until Summer —Bruce and Jody

On March 9, we were notified by our recycler that Misfit Acres took first place in their special contest to see which organization could send in the most recycling. We were awarded a cash prize and a box of the items that our recycler makes from the materials we ship in.

As we become more and more involved in our recycling fundraising, we are seeking volunteer help with the packaging. We have many, many bags of kettle corn bags that must be repacked for shipping. With just the two of us doing this, we are unable to keep up. As of now, we have a trailer in the yard full of kettle corn bags to be processed. We have put up a garden shed as well for the additional storage.

If anyone is available to help with this, please let us know. Even if volunteers could do a couple bags a week, we would be very grateful! We will supply the boxes and shipping tape to you when you pick up the recycling to be processed. Please let us know if you would be willing to help.
