The Concept of Mastery Introduction

Mountain View, California, has always been a mail town. In 1857, James W Butterfield made the town a stop for the Butterfield Overland Mail and in doing so made his company the holders of the largest land mail contract yet awarded in the United States. Shy of two hundred years later, this same town is now home to the world headquarters of Google, who in 2004 revolutionised mail themselves, launching Gmail.

Butterfield was an entrepreneur. He enacted change through gumption. Sergey Brin and Larry Page followed Einstein’s advice on mastery: learn the rules, then play better than everyone else. They had one thing in common: doing something best - mastering what they did. Vastly different enterprises, in vastly different times but a common vision.

Mastery itself is difficult to define because it is built of other qualities: innovation; craftsmanship; passion; expertise; leadership; success; and mentoring. Its dictionary definitions are so numerous they bear testament to its complex nature. Despite this or perhaps because of it, great figures in history are indisputably recognised for their mastery, though they might never share a discipline: Sir Christopher Wren’s architecture; Benjamin Graham’s timeless fiscal sense; Steve Jobs’ design; or Elon Musk’s technological innovation are all examples.

‘Master’ describes the very best practitioners in fields as diverse as the visual arts, business to golf. A master is the head of a school, a rank of academic success, an honorific bestowed on those seen to have perfected the game of chess. That tells us mastery might be hard to define but we know it when we see it.

In fact, all this variety only serves to prove that mastery bears common elements. Wherever it is practiced, however it is practiced, we may learn from it. Learning is its key. Two thousand years ago, Julius Caesar told us that practice is the master of all things. Today, Daniel Goleman teaches us that those at the top never stop learning.

Whatever else mastery is, it is endlessly evolving.

Rupert Murdoch An Hour with One of the World’s Greatest Business Leaders

Rupert Murdoch is Executive Chairman of News Corporation, the largest news and information services provider in the English speaking world comprising leading newspapers in the US, Australia and the UK; integrated marketing services; digital real estate services; book publishing; digital education; and sports programming and pay-TV distribution in Australia. He also serves as Chairman and CEO of 21st Century Fox.

In 1954, Mr Murdoch took control of News Limited, whose only key asset at the time was a majority interest in the number-two daily newspaper in Adelaide. In 1960, the Company acquired the Daily Mirror and in 1964, launched na-tional newspaper, The Australian. In 1969, the Company ventured into the U.K. and later purchased The Sun newspaper.

In the 1980s, News Corporation purchased The Times and Sunday Times as well as HarperCollins Publishers, one of the world’s largest and most digitally advanced English language publishers. In 2007, News Corporation acquired Dow Jones & Company, including The Wall Street Journal.

News Corporation purchased Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation in 1985 and the following year created the Fox Television Stations group, the foundation of FOX

Broadcasting Company and FOX Sports. In 1996, News Corporation launched the FOX News Channel — the undisputed leader in 24-hour news service.

Through the acquisition of Consolidated Media Holdings in 2012, News Corporation expanded to include Australia’s number one sports programming provider, FOX SPORTS Australia. News Corporation also owns a majority interest in REA Group.

Tom Peters 22 Things Before The First Thing & Getting Things Done

Tom Peters is widely credited with almost single-handedly inventing the public management guru industry. His iconic publication In Search of Excellence was ranked as the “greatest business book of all time” by Britain’s Bloomsbury Publishing. John Symond launched Aussie Home Loans in 1992 with a $10,000 loan from his brother. Steve Vamos Leadership in a Fast Changing Connected World

Steve Vamos has more than thirty years experience in the Information Technology and online Media industry. Steve serves as a non-exec Director of Telstra (appt Sept 2009) and as Chair of Australian start-up (now NY based) Reading Room Inc, a social network for book lovers. He is the founder and President of the Society for Knowledge Economics a not for profit think tank. Steve is also an Advisory Board member of the UTS Business School.

He served as a non-exec Director of Medibank Private (Oct 2011- Mar 2014) and David Jones (Jun 2012-Feb 2014). Andrew Connole A Sourdough Journey: The Sonoma Bakery Story

The Sonoma story is one of passion and a dedication to craft that grew a family bakehouse into a business empire. From its humble beginnings in country NSW, Sonoma Baking Company now counts six cafes across Sydney, employs a team of 200 and supplies to the city’s best restaurants, including: Quay; Aria; and Icebergs.
