Stanford - McMurtry Art and Art History Palo Alto, California96,000 sfCompleted in 2015DS+R / Bora Project

The new home for the Department of Art and Art History is an interdisciplinary hub for the Arts at Stanford. The building fosters interaction an collaboration among students and faculty and supports the integration of the arts into university life.

The 96,000 square foot building unites the programs of art practice, design, art history, film and media studies, and documentary film and video in a single location.

The building also includes art studios, screening spaces, film editing rooms, ex-hibition space, the Experimental Media Art Lab and Sound Studio and the Art and Architecture Library.

Bora acted as the executive architect for this project. Our role was to document and realize this project from Diller Scofidio’s design. I acted as project architect for this project from schematic design all the way through the completion of construction.

Block 20 Portland, Oregon300,000 sfEstimated completion 2018

Block 20 looks out over the urban oasis of Fields Park towards the Willamette River, offering commanding views of the working city and beyond. As part of the North Pearl District master plan we executed for Hoyt, the five-story podium base speaks to the pervasive low rise industrial fabric of histor-ic Pearl buildings, while the 21-story tower rises to meet city planning goals for taller, thinner, higher density residences in this neighborhood.

One of our goals in this project was to em-phasize and further establish the character of the North Pearl as a gateway to the city, with a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. Housing a total of 149 units, the building will bring a fresh material palette to the neigh-borhood with dark gray textured cement panels on the north and south facades contrasted to lighter toned cement plaster at the east and west facades. Expansive decks face east and west, and the landscaped podium roof terrace gives residents a spot to gather, mingle, and reflect on the city that wraps around them.

Mercy Corps Global Headquarters is a place of action. It is designed to invite, teach and encourage visitors – especially students – to get personally involved in answering the great world challenges of our day: poverty, hunger and conflict.

The organization’s new headquarters exem-plifies their sustainable, community-focused approach. The project restored and dou-bled the size of the Packer-Scott Building, a historic Portland landmark, and features a green roof, glass sunscreen shades that darken according to temperature, low flow fixtures and resource-friendly landscaping. The headquarters also includes the Action Center – a window to the world – featur-ing interactive exhibits that educate visitors about the constantly changing nature of re-lief and development work and provide sug-gestions for concrete ways people can act now to help.

CYAN/PDX

Portland, Oregon380,000 sfCompleted in 2009Hacker / GBD Project

Cyan/PDX is a progressive living concept, built with green technologies and building innovations. The 16-story building houses 353 urban homes in downtown Portland, a vibrant urban neighborhood with great transportation options. Cyan’s dynamic design is a direct response to the active pedestrian and vehicular activity surround-ing the building. The “weave” pattern of windows creates a tapestry of constantly changing light patterns, and a connecting plaza creates a variety of exterior spaces from ground floor units’ private terraces to a large public terrace.

Sustainable Design Highlights:

On-site rainwater storageNon-toxic finishes and regionally sourced materialsEnergy-efficient appliancesWater conserving fixturesEco-roof on the podium100% fossil-fuel free with all power provided through existing “green power” programs95% of construction waste recycled
