PLANET X NEWSIntroducing the On-One Pickenflick:You may have noticed a head turning addition to our range recently, creeping out into the world from the trusted bosom of our development team. We thought it was too good to keep to ourselves, it would’ve been selfish and we were far too excited about it all to keep it at bay. So, here it is... the On-One Ti Pickenflick Cyclocross bike.

Alan Dorrington has been riding one for a bit now, testing it in the trench conditions of the North West Cross League, and the wind swept, also trench like conditions, of the 3 Peaks. Alan has been kind enough to scribble some words down for us in the shape of a review, and as he knows it better than anyone it’s a good place to start...

My riding career, ‘cross wise, started in steel - good old fashioned 531 and then 653, eventually handmade for me by a NW framebuilder. And great those frames were too - comfortable, light enough for the job and cost effective. As frame technology moved on, so did my taste in frames and a pair of aluminium Planet X Uncle Johns served me well for many years. The On-One Dirty Disco and Planet X XLS took things off in an interesting carbon direction but until last year, I hadn’t ridden a ‘cross bike made out of the one remaining mainstream material, titanium.

THERE’S BEEN LOTS GOING ON HERE SINCE OUR LAST MAGAZINEFresh additions to our bike and clothing range, old favourites returning, new brands

and, of course, all-new websites for Planet X and On-One.We all ride here at Planet X that’s why there’s nothing more exciting than the launch of a brand new product, of which we’ve had quite a few recently, with more to come over the next few months.

The On-One Pickenflick, Planet X RT-58 Alloy and On-One 45650B, to name just a few, have been causing a stir in their respective circles, as has our Planet X 365x clothing range and the much anticipated On-One Carbon Fatty Fork - the first batch sold out within two hours! (there are more coming, of course...)

FOLLOW JONNY’S PROGRESS AT PLANETX.CO.UK/SPONSORED-RIDERS4

“I STILL FEEL LIKE I ‘OWN’ THE TRACK SOMETIMES WHEN I GO OUT THERE, CONTROLLED & STRONG”Four years after his horrific motorbike

accident Jonny Bellis is still dreaming the dream and aiming for Gold in Glasgow. Brendan Gallagher caught up with him to look at the year ahead. It is four long years now since Jonny Bellis came as close to death as it is possible without actually shifting off this mortal coil and for many that survival alone and the miraculously decent quality of life that has followed would be enough. But not Bellis, a

former World Junior Bronze medal winner and a man on a mission. He still wants to ride fast, win races and stand on podiums. Once a racer, always a racer.

The going has been as rough as hell for Bellis since 19th September 2009 when his skull was smashed into a score of pieces ,like a hammer cracking an eggshell, as he fell from his Vespa following a visit to the Quarratta home of his old mate Mark Cavendish. He’s been fighting the good fight ever since, mostly out of the public’s gaze and indeed many within cycling itself assumed he had finally hung his bike up but they would be very wrong there.

Last week Bellis secured a new professional road racing contract with Christina Watches from Denmark and now he had gone public in his intention of challenging for track medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he hopes to contest the Scratch and Points races for the Isle of Man. Bellis, still only 25, has a good track pedigree. As a 19-year-old he won Gold medals in both Points and Scratch

at the European Under-23 championships and then, before he plunged headfirst into a road career, he was a member of the GB Team Pursuit squad and rode at the 2009 World Championships. He is no mug on the boards.

“I did think about putting my name forward for the road race at Glasgow but it’s been a long haul over the last few years and it’s got to the point where I want do something on a bike again for myself. On the road I would be riding for others. It’s time to try and remind people I am still around - put my name out there again so I am targeting the Scratch Race and Points.

“I’ve been getting over to the velodrome in Manchester quite a bit this winter and it’s been going good. Shane Sutton has been mentoring me which has been really good because I’m not officially part of the GB set-up anymore and he’s been helping me out as a favour. In fact the whole set up there has been very good, trying to get me onto a good level

PLANET X, THE CHRISTINA CONNECTION & OUR SPONSORSHIP HISTORY...This year sees our re-entry to our historic roots of sponsoring and supporting many of the country’s top road cyclists and triathletes.

Ever since I started this business in 1989 I have been a big believer in supporting the country’s top riders. Our interactions with them, and theirs with us, have over the years defined us as a company in terms of closeness to the sport and our products, not to mention provide us with a lot of great memories. In short our journey became

their journey and vice versa. These things are our roots.

In hindsight, we were very fortunate; the first two junior riders we supported with bikes way back in the early 90s were the (then) motley pair of youngsters Wayne Randle and John Tanner. Over the course of the next twenty five years these riders became two of the best, and certainly the hardest, riders of our generation, yielding victories including two British pro titles to Tanner.

Amongst others who we supported and who helped define our business were the likes of Paul Curran, a double commonwealth gold medallist who became our wheelbuilder. Mark Lovatt the six-time winner of the Tour of the Peak is now our head mechanic. Spencer Smith, the three time world triathlon champion, launched the S2 clothing range with us. And of course the benchmark Ray Eden - 100 mile time trial champion, points jersey winner at the Irish Ras who would in time dedicate himself to Planet X the company for over 10 years until his untimely death.

In the past few seasons, with the huge growth of the UK scene and the distraction of a burgeoning business I’ve felt we lost our roots as we dropped out of the sponsorship scene. There were notable exceptions; juniors Ryan Mullen, Adam Blythe, Ian Stannard, Sam Harrison and a few others, but by definition we could only help a rider for a couple seasons before they had to leave to

further their progress as we had no defined route of progression beyond the UK.

TIME TO JUMP BACK IN...Recently we were offered the chance to be involved with the Christina Watches team; a top Danish team with new strong 2014 Italian connection thanks to the legend Alberto Elli.

It was the right time for our company to jump back in, and as sponsor of the team we are able now to give a few UK riders a berth on the team. So it was fortunate that the stars began to align - I was having dinner with Shane Sutton the National Coach, a straight-talking, hard-hitting man of passion who chided me for failing to rise to his previous year’s request to support a rider I knew only a little about, a certain Jonathan Bellis. For those that know Shane, a “chiding” is not a pleasant experience so I agreed for no other reason that I was pretty embarrassed and Shane is a man who inspires you to follow his lead.

Over the next months as I met Jonny several times, I got to know him better and realised what a remarkable journey he had been through. I grew to understand the unstinting loyalty and fatherly support that Shane displayed in him. The following article penned by, and reprinted with permission of, Brendan Gallagher gives you an insight into why we are proud to support a unique rider in 2014.

again. They have seen that I have come so far and it is just that last hurdle that needs clearing really. I feel good on the track, the track bike handling skills haven’t disappeared, they are always there. I still feel like I ‘own’ the track sometimes when I go out there, controlled and strong.”

Hopefully the fates will begin to swing in Bellis’ favour again, he deserves the rub of the green. That crash in Italy was truly horrific. Within hours of his head had swollen like an oversized football and it was looking all over as the local hospital staff fought to save his life before former Italy team manager Franco Ballerini, a man of much influence in the region, intervened. Ballerini arranged for Bellis’ transfer to Florence General Hospital where a team of specialist surgeons patiently plucked the shards of bone from Bellis’ brain and reconstructed his shattered skull with titanium plates. Alas Ballerini himself was killed in a car crash weeks later during a rally before anybody from Jonny’s family had the opportunity to thank him personally.

“I HAVE NEVER CONSIDERED QUITTING. AT THE END OF THE DAY CYCLING IS MY LIFE”Bellis still wasn’t out of the wood mind. There were blood clots to be cleared and a crushed cranial nerve meant he could neither swallow nor breathe properly. Another crushed nerve meant he had no feeling or use of his left leg below the knee. Internal brain haemorrhaging caused a stroke down the left-hand side of his body and on two occasions an emergency tracheotomy was needed to sustain his life. Just to compound the agony he developed a bedsore on the back of his head.

Initially he was fed and watered by a tube into his stomach but that process went drastically wrong when the food became stuck into the surrounding soft tissue, not the stomach itself. He contracted peritonitis, a bowel infection, and for the second time parents John and Linda were warned to brace themselves for the worst as the surgeons tooled up yet again and went to work painstakingly repairing is innards.

“I have no recollection at all for the first couple of months and was so full of drugs that I had the oddest dreams except I thought they were for real. One

recurring dream was being involved in a helicopter crash and another time I was convinced ‘Cav’ was for some reason was sleeping under my bed.”

There might just have been an element of truth in the latter seeping into Bellis’ scrambled subconscious - Cavendish keeping a bedside vigil for weeks, putting his career on hold to support the Bellis family.

A chartered plane eventually returned him to London and another 40-days in intensive care before his life was again threatened, this time by a dangerous dose of MRSA. He rallied again and finally he returned to the Isle of Man to begin the agonising rehabilitation process. The medics assumed it was just a decent standard of life he was aiming for, a continuation of his cycling career was clearly out of the question. Wasn’t it?

Helped by long mornings in the hyperbaric chamber on the island - built initially for local divers but used frequently by recovering Isle of Man TT riders - and long afternoons in the gym he inched back to normality but normality is of little use for a professional cyclist, you need so much more.

“I spent all of 2010 trying to recover and my first year back “racing” with Saxo Bank I simply wasn’t at the level required to be racing the pros. Even the so called easy races on the professional circuit are bloody hard and I just got a kicking all the time. Saxo did a lot to help my rehab, they were great, but I didn’t get my contract renewed at the end of that season and then went to AN Post, the Irish set-up in Belgium. I still wasn’t really back at the level to be riding races there and to be honest I was left doing my own thing and not racing which was a bit rubbish really, it wasn’t good for the head and morale. I had moved up from Italy to Belgium and I had to try and settle to a new way of life and the different kind of racing up in Belgium.

“It wasn’t going well but I have never considered quitting. At the end of the day cycling is my life, it is the only thing I have really known and it’s what I do. The biggest problem was the massive weight loss I suffered when recovering from the crash, I became a bit of a stick insect and without the weight and muscle I had lost a lot of power. I’m naturally pretty lean so getting that strength and power back has been an issue.

“Yes mentally I was finding it a bit difficult as well. If you lose confidence and your head goes it is going to affect your racing even after getting back into pretty good physical shape. I spoke to Steve Peters a few times but I have never lacked for good people to talk with, either on the island or with the like of Shane, who is a really good guy. The bottom line though is that none of them can go out there and ride your bike for you, there comes a time when you just have to get stuck in and prove it to yourself and others.”

“Last year I joined a small Belgian amateur team last year - ILLI Bikes cycling and enjoyed that much more. I had a few knee issues as well last year and

struggled a bit with that but felt better generally and was planning to ride again with them this season then the approach came up from Christina Watches a couple of weeks ago, which offered a great opportunity at getting back to a level of racing I feel I can still compete at. They are based back in Italy so that’s great, i enjoy the climate and the training territory down there and they have a good race programme so hopefully I can get stuck into some good races. It would be great if the team could secure an invite for The Tour of Britain, I had a couple of good sprint finishes in the 2008 race. That’s the sort of race I want to be appearing in again.”

Bellis was talking to me this week after a punishing six hour ride around the Isle of Man in high winds as he tried to get some big miles in his legs before the predicted rain storms arrived. Next week he takes himself off to Spain for a ten day mini-camp he has organised for himself and then joins Christina Watches for their team camp in Italy.

You would think the frustration would gnaw away at him. Given his rate of development up to 2009 it would take no stretch of the imagination to speculate that a fine career as perhaps the lead out man to one of the world’s top sprinters might have ensued and he would almost have certainly been involved at the death at the World Championships in Copenhagen helping to lead out his fellow Manxman Cavendish. Who knows he might also have ended up making the move to Sky when Cavendish joined them from HTC High Road at the end of the 2011 season. The road not taken.

“Occasionally I find myself thinking ‘what if?’ I suppose that’s only natural. There might have been senior World Championship rides, London 2012 and who knows what else but at the end of the day I can’t do a single thing to rewind the clock so it’s no point thinking like that. I can only play the cards I have been dealt and be positive. I have basically been given a second chance at life and cycling and I am determined to take it. I am still only 25 and there is time for me yet. I want to get back to that level, that is what drives me and who knows you might see me back in a Great Britain jersey one day.

I’VE COME SO FAR. WHY WOULD I WANT TO GIVE UP NOW?”

ROADBIKE

THE SPORTIVE BIKE OF CHOICE FOR ALL DAY COMFORT... We launched our brand new RT58 frame

in 2013. It has rapidly become one of the fastest selling bikes in our range; here’s the story behind its development. We’ve had a combination of racing and recreation at Planet X for many years. Seasoned Pro riders and enthusiasts work and ride for us and all of them add different things to the mix. It became clear well over three years ago that in order to bring the best to our customers we needed to be able to offer bikes specced and designed for all levels of ability, and that carbon fibre and £1000 plus price tags didn’t have to mean tall gearing, razor blade saddles and pain.

Of course we’ve had the other side of the road bike spectrum too. Planet X founder, Dave

Loughran cannot be separated from his eight year old “blue dragon” Kaffenback frame, and it was wanting to bring something lighter and yet still high speed performance based that brought our design team together around 18 months ago.

Head Mechanic and six times winner of Tour Of The Peak, Mark Lovatt, and Chief Designer Brant Richards began to write a hit list of key pointers our new bike should have. We’d already been offering compact chainsets on our bikes, and of course allowing customers to specify stem length, bar width and saddle type too. But what we wanted was more than that. More than just a setup option on a standard frame. Our N2A frame was a brilliant fast road race bike capable of mixing it with the best, but even though it offered a superb ride, we wanted a geometry and frame construction that put comfort alongside performance.

The geometry wasn’t hard to nail down, but also alongside what we did want, we knew what we didn’t. Long headtubes were firmly on the “no” list, as we knew that we could achieve a shallower drop to the stem with a touch lower bottom

bracket, also improving high speed stability and easing mounting and dismounting. Chainstays were lengthened to further increase stability and to allow good sized tyres and lightweight mudguard fitting. Top tube length was slimmed back a little to stop a full on racer stretch and maintain weight distribution fore/aft.

A standard seatpost fitting would allow riders with the funds to run a comfortable carbon seatpost. The head tube length mated perfectly with our Strada bars. It was all coming together.

Our first sample arrived. Always exciting. Mark’s test spec is based around a classic 53/39 crankset and 11-26 cassette. Not what we had in mind for production but it’s his baseline setup to let him get a feel for where it is. Standard AL30 wheels were fitted initially, then later a prototype development testbed pair of carbon spoked hoops.

Initial reports were very favourable. Triathletes loved it for its easy handling allowing you to concentrate on eating and eating up the miles. Hairy legged mountainbikers loved it. Less extreme than our other performance models

some of our team barely dallied in the dirt during the RT58 test time. It did time trials. It did the Bradley Wiggins Sportive. It was trained on. It rode to the Christmas Party and back.

Bench testing of stiffness showed excellent performance and we dispatched our carbon engineers to the factory to ensure layup methods were held precisely to our liking, modifying methods and testing and checking construction along the way.

With the carbon bike signed off and in production, we turned our skills to making an alloy version, with the same handling characteristics and geometry, but a lower entry price, for riders without the carbon budget. Which is what we’re showing you today.

We used the same geometry, then bench tested the frame to ensure it has the same frame baseline characteristics, with us riding the same test loops to trial things on. And the results were fantastic. We wanted a bike that rode with the same style and handling as the full carbon model, and we reckon we’ve nailed it. The carbon bike is great, but the ride quality from the tuned aluminium

frame gives a performance that’s every bit as good for the money.

A triple butted, formed, 6061-T6 aluminium alloy frame is hand welded, then heat treated. The carbon forks are hand laid up with each item individually checked for alignment and quality. Each bike is assembled individually by our skilled Cytech qualified mechanics in Sheffield, with your bike being made for you, allowing you to customise aspects of it, like tyres, stem and bar width, saddle choice and gearing.

All this is based around a full Shimano 10 speed Tiagra groupset with no corners cut, a quality set of Shimano wheels, this specification would cost you around £1000 on the high street. But we’re able to offer you it for a remarkable £599.

How do we do it? By working with the world’s best manufacturers, designing our own models and not accepting any middlemen to ramp up the pricing. This is a new level of performance from Planet X, not just getting Britain Cycling, but Getting Britain Cycling Faster, For Less.

PLANET X RT-58 ALLOY TIAGRAMy Winter Trainer, Commuter.“The frame beats my expectations by miles. Its the most responsive alloy frame I have ridden, its stiff in all the right places. In behaves really well when stomping on the pedals while out of the saddle. The Shimano components are also great for the money. The brakes are just as strong as my Sram

Force on my Nanolight. Best bang for the buck on the market at the moment.”

What’s your cycling history?Spent my formative years riding around cross country style on ill equipped, fully rigid mountain bikes. I remember doing lots of TT’s through the ginnels and housing estates; everybody won those.

After that it comes a blur, I certainly spent a few years off the bike as a teenager, before picking it up again as I became more and more interested in taking things apart. I’d had enough of taking synthesisers and amplifiers apart and thought the bike would be easier, and to be honest it is.

I started riding more and more whilst at university in London, I worked in bike shops, took part in a few alley cats, fell off a lot, and generally had a blast. Somewhere amongst all that I took an interest in ‘cross, and years later it’s still what excites me most.

Best thing about working for Planet X?I’m going to be diplomatic and say the people, but a part of me thinks it’s the cheap merino socks and my massive mac monitor (27”, if you must know). As it happens, Sheffield is pretty good too, offering some of the the best riding outside of West Lancashire. (Editor’s note - Sheffield is better)

Why the XLS?I like getting muddy and carrying my bike a lot, and the XLS has a very convenient flattened top tube to accommodate this. It’s a very fast bike and without doubt the fastest ‘cross bike we make. I’ve got carbon 50’s on mine, which I also commute on daily, so it must be fairly resilient too. The Flanders colours allow me to dream of the grid at Koksijde, when in reality i’m just stuck behind the X78 on the Wicker.

Cycling plans for the year?Just ride more and more; week in, week out. I’m trying to incrementally increase my miles ever week at the moment, so by December I’ll be doing about 1000 miles a week at this rate. Aside from that it’s summer ‘cross and preparation for my first 3 Peaks. I should probably buy some new overshoes and toe-in my TRP’s too.

1/2 PRICE FITTING WHEN YOU BUY A BIKE

BOTH STORES NOW OFFER PRO BIKE FITTING Whether you are a professional or recreational rider, getting the proper bike fit is an

effective and economical way to improve your riding experience.

As all bodies are different and your position on your bike should reflect your biomechanics. By

achieving an optimal fit on your bicycle, you in turn maximise efficiency, comfort and control.

Traditional tools of the trade such as tape measure and plumb bobs don’t allow accurate

measurements whilst the rider is pedalling. That’s why we’ve installed the state-of-the-art Retül

bike-fit system. Check out the video on our website to see what’s involved in more detail.

Using infra-red LEDs placed in specific locations on the rider’s body, a 3D scanner is then used

to measure each of these LEDs 29 times a second. This allows us to collect rapid streams of

information about a rider’s position and movement while riding under load. The Retül software is

linked up to our computer system, recording this real time biometric data.

During Retül a tracing of body motion is produced and a set of measurements are taken. This

allows our trained fitters to make informed, accurate judgements regarding the adjustments each

individual rider needs.

Planet X fitters are highly experienced and trained to the highest industry standards. When

combined with the unique advantages of the Retül system, this makes for the very highest

standard of fit available.
