A multicentre, doubleblind study was conducted in which 153 evaluable patients with hypertension (sitting diastolic BP ~ 95mm Hg) randomly received ate nolo I 50mg/day or a fixed combination of ate nolo I 50mg/day and slow release nifedipine 20mg/day for 3 months. following a 4-week runin period in which patients received atenolol 50mg/day.

Compared with patients who received atenolol alone. fixed combination recipients had a significant additional reduction in mean sitting and standing BP of 10/7 and 9/5mm Hg. respectively. at 24 hours. There was a similar incidence of adverse effects in both treatment groups, with headache being most commonly reported. FitLsimons TJ. Han W. von Frankenberg H. Sanderson JE. Joy MD. et al.
