LocationFounded in 1949, Saitama University (SU) is the only national university in Saitama Prefecture. It is situated in the southern part of the prefecture, within the larger Tokyo metropolitan area, approximately one hour from the JR Tokyo station by train and bus. The campus is located in Saitama city, which is one of the largest municipalities in the country, a thriving city of 1.26 million people. From the campus you can enjoy the view of the high-rise buildings of Saitama’s New Urban Center and, on sunny days, the silhouette of Mt. Fuji to the west. Situated in a natural setting with lush greenery, SU offers an ideal environment for its scholars and students to immerse themselves in research and study.

Key Policies/Shared GoalsAs a comprehensive institution, SU has set the following goals, in line with its key policies of developing human resources as the mainstay of a civil society and generating knowledge and technology in response to the demands of the day:

1: To fulfill a universal role as a seat of knowledge2: To strive to solve the challenges facing

contemporary society 3: To contribute to the global community

Undergraduate EducationSaitama University’s undergraduate programs have a strong emphasis on learning outcome goals, encouraging students to be reflective about what they learn in class and to recognize what they have become able to do through their education. These learning outcome goals form the core of our curriculum.

As an interdisciplinary university with all five faculties located on one campus, we are able to offer a comprehensive undergraduate education through the support of each faculty and the education bureau. We aim to provide students with both breadth and depth in their education: our students acquire broad fundamental knowledge in addition to their specialization or major, and they develop the tools necessary to navigate the Information Age.

Graduate School and ResearchThe Graduate School of Science and Engineering is striving to enhance and activate education and research activities in collaboration with the following institutes and organizations:■The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research

(RIKEN)■The Center for Environmental Science in Saitama■National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science

& Technology (AIST)■Research Institute of Clinical Oncology and

Saitama Cancer Center 8 Research Institutes on campus:◆Brain Science Institute◆Institute for Environmental Science and

Technology (IEST)◆Institute of Ambient Mobility Interfaces◆International Institute for Resilient Society◆Comprehensive Analysis Center for Science◆General Technical Support Center◆Research Administrator Office◆Comprehensive Open Innovation Center

We strive to advance high-level scientific research and contribute to international development. The myriad of potentials are laid for surging forward scientific research across the spectrum of fields, which will promote the international collaboration.

We encourage talented young Japanese researchers to be active world-wide. At the same time, we provide opportunities for two-way research exchange by inviting budding researchers and graduate students aspiring to careers in science from overseas.
