LITERATURECIRCLESWhenyouworkinLiteratureCircles,youareworkingaspartofateam.Itisveryimportantthateachmemberoftheteampullshisorherownweight,orelsetheLiteratureCircleswon’twork.So,makesureyoustayontask.Maximumof4membersineachgroup.Hereisanoutlineoftheresponsibilitiesforeachrole.Theseroleswillrotatesothateachgroupmemberwillhaveadifferentroleeachtimeyoumeet:

v DISCUSSIONDIRECTORTherolehastwotasks.

1. Thefirstistowritea1paragraphsummary(atleast5sentences)ofthesectionread.2. Thesecondistowrite4questionsthatthegroupcandiscuss.Thesequestionsshouldbeopen-

endedquestions,notonewordanswerquestions.~Forexample,“Whoisyourfavoritecharactersofar,andwhy?”isagoodquestion,but“Whatisthebaby’sname?”isabadquestion.

v WORDWIZARDThisrolerevolvesaroundvocabulary.Themaintaskistofind6unfamiliarorimportantvocabularywordsfromtheselection.Then,thestudentwill:

1. Writeouttheword2. Partofspeech(noun,verb,adjective,etc.)3. Definition4. WritethesentenceitwasfoundwiththepagenumberALSO,theWordWizardisresponsibletochooseoneofthe6wordsandcreateawordcardtoaddtotheWORDWALL.

v PASSAGEPICKERThisrolerequiresacloselookatthetext.Thetaskforthisroleistofind2interestingparagraphsintheselectionandcopythemout(includethepagenumberwherepassagewasfound).Then,thestudentneedstowrite1paragraphforeachpassageexplainingwhytheseparagraphswereinterestingandimportant.

v CONNECTORThisjobistofindconnectionsbetweenthebook(readingcycle)andyou,andbetweenthebookandthewiderworld.Write2paragraphsandcitetextualevidence.Considerthelistbelowwhenyoumakeyourconnections.Useyourownpastexperiences:

- Happeningsatschoolorinthecommunity- Storiesinthenews/similarevents- Otherpeopleorproblemsthatyouareremindedof
