Connecting Canada-World Suicide Prevention Day

On Wednesday, September 10, communities across Canada will come together to support those bereaved by suicide, to remember and celebrate the lives of those who died by suicide, to support those who struggle with living, and to renew our commitment to helping all Canadians reconnect with their reasons to live while building lives with dignity, purpose and meaning.

One World Connected is the theme that International Asso-ciation for Suicide Prevention (IASP) has chosen for this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day. Bringing this theme home, the West Kootenay/Boundary Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention (PIP) Committee has committed to pro-moting Connecting Canada as the theme for WSPD. Being connected with oneself, with others and with a community is critical to one’s sense of hopefulness and well-being. Building

connections rises from the pillars of suicide prevention, inter-vention and postvention. On September 10 the local PIP com-mittee is inviting all people in the West Kootenay/Boundary region to come together to remember that we are all connected to each other and join in a local kite fl ying ceremonies.

Th e kite is the national symbol for World Suicide Preven-tion Day. Th e connection we have through the string, to the kite in the sky, represents our connection to the things we strive to stay connected to – hope, community, those we have lost, and those who struggle with thoughts of sui-cide. Th e kite also reminds us of the importance of staying connected to ourselves to keep our feet on the ground and to sometimes put our heads in the clouds and dream, to be aware of ourselves, to feel our own importance and power, to care for and nurture ourselves, to have fun and play. On September 10 kite fl ying ceremonies will take place at:

TABATHA

Hello I’m Tabatha. As described by the Nelson SPCA staff, I am a gorgeous brown tabby and I’m looking for a loving forever home. After I came into the Nel-son branch, the humans here were worried I would not get along with other kitties since I have a bit of a reserved personality. But I like to keep people on their toes, so I surprised them and warmed up to the other cats, even now living in one of the communal rooms! Don’t get me wrong – I am a bit more shy than the other cats at the shelter, so I would do best in a calm household with a few warm laps to sit on. If you would like more information please call the Nelson BC SPCA at 250-352-7178.

Real People. Real Concerns. Real Happy.Put us to work for you

Over the years our good friends at the Pennywise have been a huge help with our advertising needs. Julie has always taken great care of us!

This year we took on a new challenge, as our website was in need of a fresh look. The Pennywise now of-fers design and hosting for websites and I highly recommend Pennywise for your website needs. Karma and Emily are very professional and working with them was a complete pleasure. The Pennywise is not just a valuable business to Kaslo, but to all the Kootenays. THANK YOU for being the PENNYWISE!

Jeff & Monica Davie & the staff at Kaslo Building Supplies.

Support...Hire A Student cont’d from pg 34First Nation and public sector organizations in the Basin

may apply. Co-op and practicum student positions are eli-gible. Th e program is administered by College of the Rockies.

Oglow’s Paint, Wallcoverings and Window Blinds in Castlegar is one of the organizations that has benefi ted.

“Th e program took a lot of pressure off us by allowing us to have someone doing the heavy lift ing and tinting paint—and at the same time learning new skills and deal-ing with diff erent customers—while allowing us to con-centrate on the front end,” said owner Tom Oglow. “Th e growth of the student’s confi dence was very rewarding for everyone and we would recommend the program to any-one wishing to hire a student.”

“School Works has proven to be a successful program for both businesses and students alike,” said Lisa Kilpat-rick, Columbia Basin Trust Senior Manager, Sector In-itiatives. “It gives local businesses and organizations some extra support, while increasing local employment oppor-tunities for students to make some money and get valu-able work experience during the school year.”

Manage Your EnergiesMany people ask me “What is Energy Medicine?” Is it some-

thing new? Perhaps not! Th e 1937 Nobel prize winner Albert Szent-Gyorgi remarked that “In every culture and in every medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy.” Now researchers have proven this to be ef-fective. You and I are “practitioners of energy medicine”!

Th e more we learn about basic principles of energy medi-cine, the better care we can take of our health. My teacher, Donna Eden, says: “Bring renewed stamina to your tired body, fresh vitality to your weary mind, and new life to your sagging spirit”. Ready to learn more?
