July 4th has come and gone, but is always good to take a moment to thank God for all the blessings of the country and this life.
I was recently at a conference and I heard the following story:
There was this girl in a foreign country walking on her way to Mass. She was stopped by a guard who asked her where she was going. She knew if she told him she was going to “Mass” it would mean death to her and her friends. “my brother has died” she replied “ and I am going to the reading of his will”
On her return home the same guard was on his watch asked “ How did it go?”
She replied “He left it all to me!”
Well surely, Jesus has left it all to us and truly we are blessed to praise and worship him openly in this country!
Let us continue to do so with grateful hearts!

Fraternus Fund Raising DinnerKnights Help Needed
Fraternus OLOL chapter will be holding their annual fund raising dinner on Monday, August 18th in the OLOL social hall. This is their only fund raiser of the year.
We need about 12 brother Knights to help with bar tending (serving beer and wine), set up/take down and assisting the Fraternus boys that will be serving the meals. We will need help from about 4:30 to 9:00PM. A sign up sheet will be available at the August council meeting or contact DGK Mark Gierla at: [email protected] or 975-4077.
There are some seats left so if you are interested in attending the dinner and making a contribution to support Fraternus, please contact Mark Gierla or Tom Wynne at [email protected].

Knights Help with ParkingA small group of Knights helped direct traffic for the “Concert on the Hill” on Aug 25 at OLOL. Those who helped are Tom Cirone, Jim Cunningham, Dick Emery, and Jason Hussey. Also helping was a non-Knight parishioner and a future RCIA candidate.

Fraternal Benefits NewsWhat You Should Know About Mortgage
InsuranceDid you purchase a new house recently? Congratulations! On a more sobering note, this is one of the biggest purchases you’ll ever make – and probably came with a sizable mortgage. There’s no question that such a large obligation should be factored into your life insurance planning. The real question is which type of policy would best meet your needs.
“Mortgage insurance” is actually a form of decreasing-term insurance. The face amount decreases as your principal balance decreases. If you die, the balance of your mortgage will be paid off.
You can also purchase individual term life insurance with a decreasing benefit, and the K of C offers this type of policy. Your beneficiaries could choose not to pay off the mortgage balance, and instead use the death benefit for some other purpose (education, retirement savings, etc.)
Never rule out permanent life insurance for mortgage protection. The fact is, many people move frequently during their adult years, often to more expensive housing. Owing a mortgage becomes a permanent obligation that doesn’t diminish - and, in fact, may increase. A permanent policy would be a wise buy in such a situation.

BRASSThis year will be the 26th year of BRASS. It has been a great fundraiser for the KofC since we took it over 16 years ago. This year BRASS (Bike Ride Across Scenic Sumner) is on Aug 9. Riders will leave from OLOL and there will be 3 different routes - a 25 Km, 50 Km, and 100 Km. First ride time is 7:30 am with others at 5 min intervals.
You can register on line at www.active.com or pick up a registration form at Bikers Choice. Also, Larry Phillips ([email protected], 824-4457) can e-mail you a form. Registration fee $30 for early, $40 for day of.
Volunteers should be at the church at 6 am.

Dick Emery talked about the Live Concert on the Hill to be held on 7/25 and asked for volunteers to help with parking and set up.

Unfinished Business:The Dan Kula Tree has been purchased by Kenny J, but will be withheld until the Fallen Knights' ceremony on Oct 12th.Wives Appreciation Dinner held in June was a success, and Council was presented with the new Charter as the Monsignor William S. Bevington Council. The charter was on display in the meeting room.Ice Cream Social was a success, and all that helped out were thanked. There were 233 tickets sold before the event, and 75 sold at the door (308 total). The Hendersonville fireworks were viewed by those who stayed. profit for the MR Foundation was $703.BRASS.: Larry Phillips reported that this year's event will be on August 9th. There will be 3 courses (25k, 60k and 100k) that will leave from OLOL at 7:30 am. Larry asked for volunteers to help with registration starting at 6:00 am and for manning the stations along the routes. On 8/2, help will be needed painting the direction signs on the routes. This should take 3 or 4 hours.Golf Outing: Paul Dana said that all is on or ahead of schedule. Doc Bollig reminded everyone that sleeves of balls for prizes were available for purchase for the tournament in the meeting room.Matthew Kelly Event: Tom Mikulski said they were expecting over 1000 people to attend, and that he has 100 tickets available for purchase. The event is on Sept. 20th.Dale Miller reported that the smoker and trailer work has been completed and delivered to the Council.Butt Sale: Glenn Word reported it was a success as usual and that after expenses, the Council netted $2327.Web site Status: Al Bleich reported that it is up and running and to contact him if anyone has suggestions or problems. New Business:Mark Gierla reported on the upcoming Fraternus dinner to be held
8/18. He asked for about 12 Knights to help out with setup and kitchen work and manning the adult beverage stations.
Crisis Pregnancy Center dinner to be held on 9/25. Tom Mikulski made a motion for $500 to sponsor a table. Passed.
Fellow Knight Juan Ramirez passed away last Saturday. The family
is not in good financial shape and is unable to afford funeral costs. Doug Blake made a motion that the council give the family $500 to help offset the costs. GK Thorn also mentioned that he could use GK discretion and put in $100. There was discussion that Council policy has been to not provide assist to individual knights and that the parish was helping. Doug Blake reiterated his motion. It was 2nded, but failed to pass. The hat was passed, and the members of the council raised $828 to help out.
GK Thorn mentioned that the installation of new officers will be held next month.
Dick Emery talked about the Focus Ministry and the good work that Kayla Yelle has been doing as a missionary at Georgia Tech (now moving to Northern Florida University). Mike Rector made a motion for $500 to support Kayla in her work. Motion passed.
Seminarian and fellow Knight Emmanuel Dirichukwu from Nigeria spoke to the council thanking the Knights for their brotherhood and support of him and all the seminarians.
District Deputy Report: Ed Corbitt welcomed the 3 new Knights, talked about the requirements to obtain the Shining Knights award, thanked all officers past and present for their work and said that he was amazed and overwhelmed that District 10 had a 128% increase in membership last year.
GK adjourned meeting at 8:00pm with a Prayer for Vocations.

Council 9132 Continues to GrowAt our July meeting Council 9132 grew by four new Brothers - one transferee, David Ohlwein, and three who received their First Degree; Gerry Gibbens, Darren Mexic, and Andy Royer.
David and his wife, Louise, just moved here from Collierville. They have a boy, 19, and a girl, 15, still at home. David is an attorney with Butler Snow. David’s email address is [email protected].
Gerry is retired. He and his wife, Noreen, have been in the area for about 4 years. His e-mail address is [email protected].
Darren is a longtime middle TN resident. He is a lawyer specializing in civil cases. He and his wife, Karleen, have one son, 13, still at home. His e-mail address is [email protected].
Andy moved to the middle TN area about 6 years ago from Jackson, TN. He works as a Controller at the Tennessean. He and his wife, Peggy, and three of their children became OLOL parishioners this past Easter through the RCIA program. Of their 5 children they still have a boy 19 and a girl 15 at home. A Spiritual MessageSummer is in full swing and although we have had a break on extremely hot temperatures we are experiencing quite a drought. Many lawns and gardens are beginning to show the harsh effects of the dryness. We too can experience a dryness. Spiritual dryness.
We all at one time or another in life may feel like that no matter how much we pray or attend mass, our spiritual lives seem to be less than fruitful. For some, they might not attend mass or pray for an extended amount of time.
So how can we avoid this problem? I'm not sure that we can. We all have times that God seems so far away from us. We often go to the beach or possibly the mountains for a week or two to get away from our jobs and to unwind from all the stress that comes with our work. We come back rested and ready to tackle the next big project. If we are experiencing spiritual dryness, quite possibly some type of spiritual retreat could be in order. There is no shortage of retreats that one could attend. There are even at-home retreats that can be practiced without ever leaving the home.
Our prayer lives must be practiced every day to avoid times of dryness. When we pray, sometimes we are doing just a bit too much talking to God and not listening for his word and simply enjoying a time in his presence. The good news is that no matter how far away from God we feel, God is always close to us. He never leaves us He promised to be with us forever.
So don't worry too much if you are encountering some type of spiritual dryness; God has the answers for us if we will just quiet down and trust in him with our prayer and worship.

How do you tell when you're out of invisible ink?
A Knight Helps a KnightThere are probably numerous times each year where some Knight helps another Knight in need. In most cases these acts of Brotherhood remain anonymous and no one except those involved ever know.
But once in a while such an act of kindness comes into the light of day. Such is the case of Stanley Cummings who was kind enough to stop after his work day and install some gutter guards on the home of fellow Knight Dan Bernier..
