The Six Wives of Henry VIII
Henry VIII was born in 1491 at Greenwich Palace, the second King of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. His first queen was Catherine of Aragon was born in 1485 to Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. She was betrothed at the age of 3 to Prince Arthur of England and married him in 1501. Arthur died 5 months later and so Catherine was then betrothed to his brother Henry, then aged 11.
The marriage took place in 1509 when Henry became King. Catherine bore 6 children, but only her daughter Mary lived (Mary I 1516-1558) Henry’s desire for a male heir caused him to seek an annulment of his marriage. In 1553 Henry married Anne Boleyn after which he received the desired decree of nullity from the Archbishop Cranmer. Catherine was then kept a virtual prisoner in Kimbolton Castle until her death in 1536.
Anne Boleyn, the daughter of Sir Thomas Boleyn, was born in 1507. In 1553, she gave birth to Henry’s second daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth. When Elizabeth was only 3 years old, her mother was
sentenced to death, accused of adultery and incest and thus was beheaded at the Tower of London.
Jane Seymour who was born in 1508 became Henry’s third wife when they married in 1536, one day after Anne Boleyn’s execution. She died a year later of postnatal complications, less than two weeks after the
birth of their son, Edward VI, which Henry had longed for.
In pursuit of a German alliance, Thomas Cromwell suggested the excessively plain Anne of Cleve as Henry’s fourth wife. Born in 1515, Anne was the daughter of John, duke of Cleves. She however proved to be so plain that Henry had the marriage declared null and void in 1540. She received a comfortable
pension and died naturally in 1557.
Henry had already fallen for Catherine Howard and they married in 1540. After they were married, Henry found out that Catherine was having an affair with the courtier Thomas Culpeper and Francis Dereham.
All three were executed in 1542 at Tower Green.
At last in 1543, Henry found some comfort in the pain of his declining years in the company of his sixth wife, Catherine Parr. Catherine was born in 1512 and already had lost 2 husbands when marrying Henry in 1543. She proved a good natured and virtuous widow who was kind to his children and Henry himself.
She survived him and in 1547 married her fourth husband Lord Seymour of Sudeley.
