There is some pretty intriguing life in the world’s oceans, and this week, Tidbits dives into examining some of the unusual creatures found there.

• Probably the most feared shark and frequently called a “man-eater,” the great white shark actually prefers a dinner of sea lion rather than human prey. The species’ Latin name Carchardon Carcharias, translates “jagged teeth,” and indeed, this shark has about 3,000 teeth, all arranged in several rows. They fi nd their prey very easily due to their extreme sensitivity to the electrical fi eld surrounding living creatures, perceiving half a billionth of a volt. They’re found in every major ocean, and have a life span of more than 30 years. How likely are you to experi-ence an unprovoked attack by a shark? You’re more likely to die from a lightning strike. • Due to the publicity generated by the death of adventurer Steve Irwin, lots of folks believe that the manta ray can kill a human. Irwin’s chest was pierced by a stingray, not a manta. The manta is the largest of all rays, up to 25 feet (7.6 m) across, weighing as much as 5,100 pounds (2,300 kg). While its tail is similar to that of a stingray, it does not have a stinger and is harmless to swimmers.• The squid, snail, octopus and clam are all exam-ples of mollusks, soft-bodied creatures with no inter-nal skeleton. Some mollusks have a hard outer-shell; some do not. More than 85,000 species of mollusks have been identifi ed, and most probably there are many more that have not yet been discovered. • The common squid can be found in all of the oceans of the world. Most are about 24 inches (60 cm) long, but the giant squid reaches lengths of 43 feet (13 m). In 2003, an even larger species was dis-covered, the colossal squid, which may grow to 46 feet (14 m). When in danger, the squid emits a cloud of ink from a sac to confuse its predators. This mol-

lusk has the largest eyes in the animal kingdom; in fact, the colossal squid’s eyes have a diameter of about 11 inches (28 cm). • Certain octopuses have a life span of only six months. Even the longer-living species only live about four years. Reproduction takes its toll on this sea creature, with males surviving only a few months after mating and females dying within a short time after their eggs hatch. An octopus, like the squid, is a cephalopod, which translates to “head to foot” be-cause its appendages are attached to its head. Also like the squid, the octopus ejects a cloud of dark ink when threatened by predators. The ink is colored by melanin, the same compound that gives humans our hair color. Not only can the octopus eject ink for pro-tection, it can instantly camoufl age itself, changing the color of its skin to match its environment.• The largest octopus is the Giant Pacifi c Octopus, which swims in the waters off British Columbia. Their average weight is usually about 33 pounds (15 kg), with an arm span of about 14 feet (4.3 m) and rarely exceeds 90 pounds (40.8 kg). However, the occa-sional one is found that lives up to the name “giant,” such as the largest ever caught, which weighed about 600 pounds (272 kg).

Women Vets Polled on Health Care

The American Legion recently asked women veterans about the health care provided by

Department of Veterans Affairs. While the survey indicates an overall positive feeling, there is a lot of room for improvement, especially when compared to civilian health care.Here are some of the results from the 67-question survey:Access: Approachable and easy to contact? One-third of the women were dissatisfi ed, mostly with their Women Veterans Program Manager, when it came to getting information about gender-specifi c care. One-quarter said the convenience of the locations is poor.Competence: Most respondents were satisfi ed with the medical staff’s level of knowledge and skills, but one quarter weren’t, and that’s a big percentage.Reliability: Ability to perform services accurately and dependably. Nearly one-third were dissatisfi ed with VA health care, compared with their private doctors.Communication: Forty percent didn’t feel that they were given enough information on treatments and procedures.Responsiveness: Willingness to provide prompt care. One-third responded that they were dissatisfi ed, compared with their civilian doctors. Credibility: Believability and honesty of the staff. Compared with their civilian doctors, many of the women were dissatisfi ed. It was suggested that the VA adopt some of the practices of private health care.Courtesy: Polite and friendly staff. Again, one-quarter of respondents rated the VA as lacking in this regard, and it was suggested that perhaps more training of staff is required.Finally, one-third of the women veterans who replied to the survey don’t know what all their benefi ts are -- health care or otherwise.While women veterans comprise a smaller percentage of service personnel, they’ve earned the right to good care. Paying for Retirement Is Major Concern

More and more of us are concerned about how we’re going to pay

for retirement, or whether can retire at all, espe-cially as the economy has soured. The Society of Actuaries recently issued a report entitled “The Impact of the Economy on Retirement Risks” about how we’re handling our fears.Here are some facts its survey uncovered:• Nearly half of those polled who have not yet retired are very concerned about retirement fi -nances, much more so than ever before.• Two-thirds of retirees surveyed say their fi nanc-es are worse than before the economy took a downturn, with a quarter saying “much worse.” For those not yet retired, the fi gures are even higher. Those who banked on having return from investments have suffered from low interest rates, and those who considered their home a “nest egg” for retirement money are hard hit. • A quarter of retirees fear they might need to re-turn to work, while two-thirds who haven’t retired think they’ll need to work longer.• People who haven’t yet retired have more con-cerns than those who have already retired. The major concerns are paying for long-term health care, the falling value of investments, running out of money, inability to maintain a standard of liv-ing and not having anything to leave to heirs.• Seniors have more debt than they expected to have at retirement. But if there’s a retirement strategy the majority agreed on, it’s this: Get rid

• The mythological mermaid fi rst appeared in sto-ries around 1,000 B.C. An Assyrian legend tells of the goddess Atargatis falling in love with a mortal shepherd. When she accidentally killed him, she was so devastated, she jumped into a lake and took the form of a fi sh. Although beautiful, mermaids don’t have a very good reputation. Folklore tells of them singing to people to enchant them, then luring them to their doom. Rather than rescuing drowning sail-ors, they squeeze the life out of them. British tales speak of seeing a mermaid as an unlucky omen, one that foretells of impending disaster. • The blue whale is the largest animal in the world, weighing between 100 and 150 tons (100,000 to 150,000 kg). Even at birth, they are huge — 23 to 27 feet long (7 to 8.2 m) with a birth weight of three tons (2,722 kg)! A calf will nurse for about eight months, during which it will drink 100 gallons (379 l) of milk every day, putting on about 200 pounds (91 kg) a day. That’s eight pounds (3.6 kg) an hour! When a calf is weaned, it is 52 feet (16 m) long and weighs about 23 tons (20,900 kg).• Just the tongue of a blue whale has a weight of 2.7 tons (2,700 kg), more than an elephant. Fifty people could stand on it! Its mouth can hold up to 90 tons of food and water, but strangely enough, the whale’s throat dimensions only allow for it to swallow

an item the size of a beach ball. The heart weighs 1,300 pounds (590 kg), the size of a small car, and beats just 10 times per minute. Its major arteries are large enough for a small child to crawl through.• “Benthic marine algae” is a fancy name used by scientists for seaweed. Seaweed is used for everything from food to medicine to fertilizer. People in some Asian countries consider some varieties a great delicacy and receive health benefi ts from its rich deposits of calcium, magnesium and iodine. Folks in Belize mix it with milk, nutmeg, cin-namon and vanilla for a popular bev-erage. Germans add seaweed’s com-pounds to many of their beers. You’ll fi nd it in cosmetics, wound dressings,

toothpaste and diet pills. Exclusive spas offer sea-food wraps for the body. At the hardware store, sea-weed is present in paints and fertilizers. • An echinoderm is characterized by “racial sym-metry,” that is, several arms radiating from a central body. The most familiar echinoderm is the starfi sh. Although we think of the starfi sh as having fi ve arms or “rays,” there are several species that have six or more. Some have 10 to 15 arms, and the Antarctic species Labidiaster annulatus can even have up to 50! A starfi sh’s mouth is found on the underside of its body, and many of these creatures swallow their prey whole. Although the lifespan of the average starfi sh is about 10 years, some live past 30.

I saved a dogs life the other day.

Hi I’m Brian and I am a carpet cleaner in Spokane. I got a call from a very frustrated man last week. The family dog had been peeing on the new carpets. The Spokane East Rotary Club will again sponsor our 4th Soap Box Derby for “special need kids.” The Soap Box Derby will again be held in Liberty Lake, WA on July 9, 2011. We will have two starting times. The fi rst starting time will be at 8:30 AM and the second starting time will be at 10:30 AM. If you have not pre-registered, please feel free to come to the race and, if possible, we will try to accommodate you and your child. At the con-clusion of the race, at about 1:00 PM, Bob Scott, Golf Pro of the MeadowWood Golf Course will provide, at his expense, an old fashion BBQ. This race is intended to reward special needs children with the race of a lifetime. Special needs children are paired with volunteer drivers and a soap box derby race car for the ride of their life. The derby cars will run down Molter Road at Pavillon Park to Valleyway. The children will then be pulled back to the top of the hill by an ATV. The children love riding on the ATV’s because this is the fi rst time many of them have ever ridden on one. This year we are hoping to have in excess of 30 special needs children and drivers. Each participant is awarded a medallion at the conclusion of his/her ride.We would like thank the City of Liberty Lake for allowing us to block off Molter Road for the race.We have many sponsors, and because Spokane East Rotary uses its funds for community projects, our excess funds will be given to projects like Meals on Wheels, The Guild School, Hope School - Oral Deaf, Venessa Behan Crisis Clinic, Second Harvest Food Bank and

the East Side Community Center. One example is when Pavillion Park was constructed, Spokane East Rotary donated $10,000 for the playground equipment. Recently, I spoke with Dr. Karen “Doc” Halligan, a veterinarian and author who has appeared on shows like “The Today Show” and “Animal Rescue

911.” She is the author of “What Every Pet Own-er Should Know: Prescriptions for Happy, Healthy Cats and Dogs.”Foremost on my mind was on how pet owners who are fi nancially challenged -- whether seniors on a fi xed income, unemployed or otherwise having dif-fi culties -- could continue to keep their pets healthy. In addition to stressing the importance of preven-tive care, Halligan urges owners to tell their vet if they’re having money problems.“I tell owners, be up front with your vet,” says Hal-ligan. “Say (that) money is a factor. Don’t come in there and think that we’re going to change the way we treat your pet because you tell us you can’t af-ford it. That’s not the case. We need to know if you’re on a fi xed income ... [to] come up with a game plan to keep your pet as healthy as possible and try to save you money.”Here are a few tips from Halligan on affordably keeping pets healthy:--Flea and tick prevention in summer is paramount. Busch’s Toyota had traded licks with a Childress Chevy, one driven by Joey Coulter, and then Busch had roughed up the kid a bit during the cool-down lap. Busch had roughed up another Childress Chevy, the one assigned to Busch’s foil Kevin Harvick, after a Sprint Cup race at Darlington.The latter incident apparently led the 65-year-old Childress to mutter, or think, something along the lines of “enough is enough,” probably with at least one epithet added. Apparently, the resulting incident wasn’t caught on tape, so it may be something like the dime novels of the Old West. Let us consider the strange case of Richard Childress and Kyle Busch.Childress is the last vestige -- full-time, anyway -- of old school in

NASCAR team ownership. He and Dale Earnhardt made a perfect match. Childress interacted as easily with Bud Moore and Junior Johnson as he now does with Rick Hendrick and Roger Penske. Childress’s success is grounded in the way that he manages to bridge the generations.The younger Busch brother is Thoroughly Modern Kyle. He is wondrously talented and self-centered. Sometimes people insist on comparing him to Earn-hardt, which is akin to comparing Tim Linecum to Bob Gibson. If Kyle Busch is his generation’s Dale Earnhardt, his generation has really changed.Though I rather like both men, they obviously do not care for each other.I like Childress for the qualities described above. This former racer, who built his empire by hand, is about as adept as dealing with the media as any-one I’ve encountered. He has an instinctive knack for handling the various issues that confront his team.I like Kyle Busch because he isn’t a phony. I may disagree with him. In fact, at times, I may consider him a brat. But he isn’t afraid to be himself, and has the strength of conviction not to worry unduly about

He paid a fi ne, and they put him on probation.Probation. Let me defi ne it for the umpteenth time. In NASCAR, it’s a serious-sounding word that means “nothing.” Here’s one more shred of evidence.Long before handing down the slap to Childress’s wrist, NASCAR absolved Busch of blame. On race morning at Kansas Speedway, word spread that Busch’s actions “would not affect his probation.”How can this be so?Busch was on probation for his role in an incident in which he bumped another car after the Darlington race. How could bumping another, well, truck, after a Kansas race “not affect his probation”?I’m not after Kyle Busch. I fi gure he’s got enough of a headache with M&Ms, one of his sponsors (do they melt in your mouth, or do you get belted in the mouth?), without having another meaningless level of probation thrown in.But the whole reaction makes NASCAR look, yet again, like a mountain.A mountain of Jell-O.
