So, try a “Chardonnays of the World” themeand compare the delicate French Chablis witha robust American-oaked Napa Chardonnayto a gentle Old/New World fusion of Australia’sYarra Valley. Or, you may want to spice thingsup with an assortment of Chilean wines, withsome Malbecs, Carmeneres, and SauvignonBlancs.

Even on a shoestring budget, you can affordto go global for your own wine tasting. Ifyou’re on a tight budget or you like to doevents like this frequently, ask each of yourguests to bring a bottle of wine within thetheme of the tasting.

Everybody likes to be included, so it’s worthinvesting in at least one cheat sheet that hasuseful descriptive terms and hints about eachwine you taste. That way, newbies and sea-soned wine tasters alike can focus on the wineand nobody feels self-conscious about notknowing the lingo. Many liquor stores andwineries sell pocket-sized tasting guides forunder $5, but you can just as easily print oneoff the Internet.

You may also want to invest in an opaquepitcher to serve as a spittoon. This allowsdesignated drivers a chance to politely spit outthe wine after they’ve sampled it, so they toocan participate in the fun!

MAKING IT A TRUE TASTINGEXPERIENCEMake the wine tasting its own event.

Don’t try to shoehorn it between appetizersand dinner and don’t stress about finding theperfect food to pair with it. That’s not what atasting is about.

Start with the heaviest, most dry wine andserve about a quarter glass to your guests.This is just enough to appreciate each wine,while keeping in mind that several wines willbe served throughout the course of the tasting.It’s also a good idea to have some bread inbetween each taste to freshen everybody’spalette.

If you choose to serve dinner, do so after thetasting and allow each guest to choose theirfavorite wine of the evening to accompanytheir meal.

1 cup sour cream1/2 cup horseradish1/2 cup diced roasted red peppers

Combine all ingredients.

– Don’t enter the water if you can’tswim.

– Swim near a lifeguard. United States Lifessaving Association statistics show that substantially more drownings occur in areas where there are no lifeguards.

– Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.

– Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents.

These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.

– Don’t let your kids swim unsuper-vised, even in guarded areas.

– Don’t swim alone. Use the buddysystem so that someone always knows where you are so they canget help if needed.

– Don’t overestimate your swim-ming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t

get stuck in water over your head.

– Don’t rely on flotation devices. – Swim parallel to shore if you

want to swim long distances.– Don’t swim against the current.

Swim across the current to escape the pull.

– Always swim sober.– Don’t dive into unknown water

or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first. This will helpyou avoid spinal injuries.

PUBLIC BEACH ACCESS:All of the beach is public, fromthe ocean to the high watermark. Access to the beach, how-ever, is often private. The Town ofHilton Head Island provides ninebeach accesses: Alder LaneBeach Access, off South ForestBeach Drive; Coligny BeachPark, off Coligny Circle;Driessen Beach Park, at theend of Bradley Beach Road;Chaplin Community Park, offWm. Hilton Pkwy.; Fish HaulPark & Mitchelville BeachPark, at the end of Beach CityRoad; Burkes Beach Access, atthe end of Burkes Beach Road;Folly Field Beach Park andIslanders Beach Park, both offFolly Field Road.

PARKING & FACILITIES:There are 23 metered spacesat Alder Lane; 54 meteredspaces at Folly Field and 13metered spaces at BurkesBeach Road. The parking fee isa QUARTER for each 15minutes.

Additionally, there are 207spaces at Driessen Beach Parkfor long-term parking. The feeis a QUARTER for each 30minutes during the week.

Parking spaces at IslandersBeach Park are ALWAYSreserved for annual beachpasses. Parking at DriessenBeach Park for annual beachpasses is reserved from 8 a.m.to 3 p.m. Parking is FREE atFish Haul Park, MitchelvilleBeach Park and Coligny BeachPark. Handicap parking isavailable at no fee at all beachparks.

Restrooms, changing areas,sand showers and vendingmachines are available at thebeach parks.

DESIGNATED SWIMMING AREAS:Official swimming areas havebeen designated for the AlderLane, Coligny, Driessen, FollyField and Islanders Beach

Parks. The boundaries will beclearly marked on the beachand in the water.

During the beach season,lifeguards are stationed ineach of the designatedswimming areas for assistanceand beach information. Pleaseask a lifeguard before enteringthe water if the yellow cautionflag is flying.

BEACH MARKER SIGNS:Hilton Head’s beaches aremarked with signs to letemergency responders knowwhere anyone who needs helpis on the beach. They are alsouseful to help you find yourplace if you are lost on thebeach. It is helpful foreveryone in your group toknow the marker where youare staying, so that you canreturn on your own or tellbeach patrol personnel, sothey can get you back to theright place. The markers sitnear the dune line.


ANIMALS are NOT permitted between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. from the Friday before Memorial Day throughLabor Day. Animals MUST be on a leash between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., April 1 through the Thursday beforeMemorial Day and the Tuesday after Labor Day through September 30. Animals must be on leash or underpositive voice control at all other times. Persons in control of animals on the beach are required to remove andproperly dispose of the animal’s excrement. Ordinance signs are posted at most beach access points.

– Apply plenty of sunscreen and reapply it throughout the day. Remember trouble spots, such asthe ears, feet, and nose. Even cloudy days allow the sun’s harmful rays to cause sunburn.

– Wear sunglasses. The sun’s rays can cause serious eye damage.

– Drink plenty of water. The hot summer days can dehydrate you very quickly.

– Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.

– Don’t leave your kids unsuper-vised, even in guarded areas. They may wander and become lost.

– Find the nearest lifeguard if you or someone in your group becomes lost.

– Report any hazardous beach conditions to the nearest lifeguard.

– Know the name of the beach or hotel/condo and the beach marker number where you are staying, so the lifeguard can better assist if you are lost.

– There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in the water, which may sting or cut a person. Other problemsmay occur on the beach or in the water which may require first aid. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medicalattention.

– Report any hazardous water conditions to the nearest lifeguard.

– Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

RULES FOR THE ROAD

Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a

red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound yourwarning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend

to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways.

Be courteous, alert and predictable.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides over 50 milesof public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment ofpedestrians and cyclists.

At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are idealfor biking. Public beaches are indicated on the IslandEvents’ Island Map.

Our map also shows the existing public pathways.Many kiosks are located along the pathways with anIsland-wide map on one side, and a localized map of thearea on the other.

History of the Sea Pines Forest Preserve

The Sea Pines Resort Forest Preserve wasformally opened on June 1, 1971.

Charles and Joseph Fraser of the Sea Pines’founding family filed legal covenants in 1970dedicating the 606 acres in the Preserve as aWildlife Habitat and Outdoor RecreationFacility.

It was specifically created so that we mightall enjoy and appreciate the varied bounty ofour very special natural environment.

The Forest Preserve is one of Hilton Head’sfinest assets. Many visitors consider a visit tothe Preserve the highlight of their visit here, asit offers an insight into the value of land leftin its natural state for thousands of visitors toenjoy.

Within the Preserve, there is a Shell Ring madeby Indian Moundbuilders 4,000 years ago –built about the same time as the Pyramids!Locals used to say that the Ring had somereligious significance, but scholars say thatthe Ring was created around a campsite and old oyster shells form its base. Ancientartifacts have also been found there to givethe historians insight into the Indians’ daily life.

The Sea Pines Resort Forest Preserve providesan oasis of valuable natural habitats in anotherwise heavily developed coastal island.

The “Forest” describes the varieties of trees andplants, including the pine woods, live oak for-est, fresh water marsh and the endless varietiesof grass. Depending on the time of your visit,you might be able to enjoy the spectacularwildflower meadow in full bloom by LakeThomas or herons nesting by the thousandson the shores.

The wildlife in the Preserve is renowned andyou will probably pass alligators basking inthe fishing lakes or sunning themselves on thebanks. The Hilton Head Whitetail Deer popu-lation is also very prolific, although rarelyspotted during daylight hours.

Over 200 species of birds have been spottedin the Preserve and the area has been recog-nized as an “Important Bird Area” by theNational Audubon Society. Ornothologistscome from all around to view the birdlife inand around Lakes Mary, Thomas and Joe.

Of all the animals that frequent the saltmarshand tidal waters surrounding Hilton HeadIsland, none attracts so much attention asAtlantic Bottlenose dolphin.

We are fortunate, in our area, to enjoydolphin year-round.

Known especially for their unique strandfeeding behavior, witnessed only along a100-mile stretch of our shoreline, theresident dolphin are joined by migrants whohave spent the cooler winter months roamingnear shore along the coast of SouthCarolina. Combined, the population ofdolphin swells to several hundred – possiblymore – during the summer months.

And now, with the summer season upon us, itis highly likely you will witness the feeding,frolicking and playful behaviors of dolphinalong our sandy shores and within the grassyconfines of our salt marshes.

What makes our waterways so inviting? Food!

The abundance of food drives dolphin intothe rich marine habitat of the Lowcountry.Biologists estimate the saltmarsh producesseveral times the bio-mass produced by themost fertile agricultural soil. The amount ofplant and animal life produced and supportedin the saltmarsh environment is astonishing.

Adrift as the tide ebbs and flows, countlessmicro-organisms nourish larger and largerorganisms in the food web that ultimately

serve as breakfast, lunch, dinner (and lots ofsnacks in-between) for dolphin. An averageadult dolphin – about eight feet long andseveral hundred pounds – consumes about50 pounds of fish each and every day!

Highly intelligent, dolphin use both ocularawareness and eco-location to masterfullylocate food in their environment, most oftenworking cooperatively to isolate, school,consolidate and devour their prey. It is saidtheir eco-location skills can become so acutethat they can identify their favored fishes fromall the rest!

Do note that dolphin are different fromporpoise. While dolphin and porpoise arerelated (both are members of the orderCetacea), dolphin and porpoise aredistinctively different.

Dolphin have conically-shaped teeth;porpoise have flattened spade-shaped teeth.Dolphin typically have a distinct thick beak,while porpoise tend to have a blunt nose.Other noticeable characteristics: Dolphintend to have a curved dorsal fin, while that ofa porpoise is more triangular in shape anddolphin tend to be larger than porpoise.Finally, porpoise tend not to hang out in ournear-coastal waters.

Federally protected, it is unlawful to feed orattract dolphin to your boat or kayak.Respectfully observe these wonderful animalsfrom a safe distance. Allow them to remainwild by not interacting with them. Theirnatural antics will charm and amaze you.

The Cicada will also make a distress call, thathas a much higher pitch than its mating call.This is usually sounded when the Cicada isunder attack. Most commonly they are eaten bybirds and will create the high-pitched distresscall, when being pecked off a tree.

There are 2,500 species of Cicadas around the world, most of which are periodical. Theylive on a specifically timed life cycle, such as 13-year or 17-year cycles.

This means that in one place all the members ofa specific Cicada population develop at thesame time. They all hatch at the same time,burrow into the ground at the same time andemerge together within a 13- or 17-year span.

While South Carolina has Annual Cicadas thatenliven our summers, we also have PeriodicalCicadas. This year, 2011, is the emergence of aspecific 17-year cycle Cicada – the Magicicada,Brood 19. These special Brood 19s will have redeyes and lighter-toned bodies of yellow andorange, unlike our usually black-colored Cicadas.They will begin to emerge in June and continueto flood our forests for much of the summer.

This type of periodical Cicada may be familiarto many people around the United States whosuffer from plagues of these insects in thesummer months. Referred to as Locust inNorthern and Midwestern states, Cicadas andLocust are very different creatures all together.

A Locust comes from the order Orthopterawhich is the order of Grasshoppers, Cricketsand Katydids. The Locust form is a reference tothe swarming phase of a Short-HornedGrasshopper. In the right conditions, theseGrasshoppers can reproduce very quickly andcan travel great distances, destroying crops andcreating a large disturbance in rural areas. Thistype of great emergence is similar to theperiodical lifestyles of some Cicadas.

The maleCicada is thenoisiest of the bunch!

Have you ever wondered about the constantbuzzing noise on Hilton Head? It lasts all dayand all night throughout our summer months.They are Cicadas, an annual insect thatemerges throughout the South. Their brilliantacoustics bring our Lowcountry summers to life.

The Cicada is an insect in the Hemipteraorder, which is the family of true bugs. Morespecifically, it is in the genus of Tibicen, whichis an annual Cicada.

The life cycle of a Cicada begins in treebranches, where the mother can depositseveral hundred eggs. After the newbornnymphs are born, they drop to the groundwhere they burrow into the substrate. TheNymphs have very strong legs for digging andwill live one to eight feet underground.

Feeding off of tree roots for the first 2 to 3 yearsof their lives, once they are ready to emergeand the temperature is right (usually about 80 degrees Fahrenheit), they dig their way to

the surface. The Nymphsthen shed their skin in aprocess called molting andemerge out of their new skinas adults. This exoskeletoncan commonly be seenlatched onto trees aroundthe Lowcountry. TheCicadas will then live for

another year or two, in an effort to reproduceas much as possible.

The male Cicada is the noisiest of the bunch!The purpose of all their racket is to attractfemales.

The noise is made by a tymbal, located on theside of the Cicada’s abdominals. The contrac-tion and relaxation of the tymbal musclescreates clicking noises. The majority of the ab-dominal section of the Cicada is hollow,creating a great area for acoustics. This rapidclicking noise can then reverberate within the

First of all, surf fishing hasofficially hit high gear withdaily catches of whiting,snapper bluefish, red drumand a variety of sharks andstingrays.

For the inshore anglers,redfish can be caught in avariety of ways.

They are still at the mouthsof feeder creeks and tailingon the shallow flats. Theinshore waters are alsoheating up with catches ofladyfish and jack crevalle,bluefish and Spanish mack-erel on light tackle.

This is the time of year thelarger sharks are in for thebreeding season, so dustoff your heavy tackle if youplan to fight these mon-sters. Also, cobia can stillbe caught in good numbersfor the first few weeks ofthe month, but they will

soon move out to theoffshore reefs and wrecks.

Offshore fishing gets betterthis month with largeschools of Spanish mack-erel and bluefish to keepthe trolling boats busy andlive bait fishing for kingmackerel on the reefs.

You’ve hit a nice drive that has stoppedon a sloped part of the fairway, caus-ing you to stand below the ball for yournext shot.

Don’t panic. Think about how yourclub will rest on the ground relative tothe ball. If you were hitting off a flat lie,the clubface would sit flush against theground, with the heel and toe alignedon the same horizontal plane. Here,however, the toe will sit slightly higherand the heel lower than the ball,requiring you to make some subtleadjustments.

On an uphill lie, your clubface restsagainst the ground the way it would ifyou were using clubs too long for you.The toe will sit higher than the ball andthe heel lower, creating sidespin thatwill cause the ball to draw.

With the toe and heel misaligned inthis manner, you will unavoidablyimpart sidespin to the ball, causing ahook.

Keeping this in mind, the first thing youmust do is adjust your target line. Sinceyour ball will hook, adjust your stanceso that you are aligned not directlytoward the target but to the right of it.

There is no specific rule for determin-ing how much you should aim right,

other than that dictated by common sense. The greaterthe slope, the farther right you should aim. Time andpractice will enable you to develop an instinctive feel forhow slight or severe an adjustment to make when facedwith this type of shot.

Take several practice swings to allow your feet to getaccustomed to the unusual alignment. The goal is toadapt your normal feeling of vertical balance to the uphillslope.

Many amateurs respond to uphill, downhill or sidehill liesby shortening their backswing, follow-through or both.Remind yourself not to do this. All the adjustments youneed to make are done prior to the swing.

Once you’ve adapted your balance, choke down on theclub a bit to ensure the clubface is still sitting evenagainst the ground. If you stand too erect, the heel will lift slightly, making the toe dig into the ground andencouraging a poor strike.

As you set up, bounce on your knees slightly to makesure your balance is centered over your thighs and theballs of your feet. It is critical to ensure your weightdoesn’t slip backward toward your heels or forwardtoward your toes. Again, your primary objective here is tomaintain a feeling of balance despite standing on anuneven slope.

Finally, because you’ve choked down, effectivelyshortening your club and compromising some distance,take an extra club. From a sloped lie, you’ll most likely hitshorter than usual, so swallow your pride, compensatewith more club instead of less and you’ll probably behappier with the result.
