MATCH 25 HILTON COLISEUM • AMES, IOWA

TEXAS TECH FACE IOWA STATE IN FRONT OF NATIONAL TV AUDIENCETexas Tech will travel to face Iowa State in front of a national television audience Wednesday night when the Red Raiders and Cyclones battle at 8 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. The match will air live nationally on ESPNU with Adam Amin calling the action and Maria Taylor providing the color commentary. Tech heads into the match looking to snap a four-match losing streak as the Red Raiders are 8-16 on the year and 1-7 in Big 12 play while Iowa State enters this week 12-6 overall and in a tie for second place in the conference standings with a 6-2 record in league action.

AROUND THE NET• Wednesday night’s match is believed to be Texas Tech’s first-ever volleyball appearance on an ESPN network. This will be Tech’s fifth television appearance out of seven currently scheduled for this season. • Texas Tech will begin the second half of Big 12 Conference play on the road as the Iowa State match is one of two con-tests away from Lubbock for the Red Raiders this week. Tech will travel to Morgantown, W.Va., Saturday afternoon for a 12 p.m. CT first serve against West Virginia. • The Red Raiders will be looking to snap a 14-match losing streak to Iowa State on Wednesday as Texas Tech last defeated the Cyclones on Oct. 26, 2006, in a five-set thriller at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock. Even with the long losing streak, Tech still owns a 20-18 all-time advantage in the series. • The Red Raiders are 10-8 all-time against Iowa State when playing in Ames but have not defeated the Cyclones at Hilton Coliseum since Sept. 25, 2004, which came in a 3-1 victory. Texas Tech’s only Big 12 victory so far this year also came on the road in a 3-2 victory on Oct. 12 at TCU. • One stat to watch Wednesday night is digs as Iowa State and Texas Tech enter this week ranked second and third, respec-tively, in the Big 12 for the category. The two teams also feature the conference’s top two liberos in Iowa State’s Kristen Hahn and Texas Tech’s Rachel Brummitt. • Despite just one victory during the first half of Big 12 play, the Red Raiders still have a chance to climb the conference standings as only two wins separate the Red Raiders from fifth-place Baylor.• The Red Raiders are coming off a 3-1 loss last Saturday against Baylor where Texas Tech raced out to a 25-16 victory in the first set before the Bears rallied to win the next three sets. It was Tech’s fourth-straight loss dating back to the TCU victory.• Iowa State, meanwhile, is coming off a pair of wins a week ago over then No. 23 Kansas and TCU. The win over the Jay-hawks marked Iowa State’s first over a top-25 opponent so far this season.

TEXAS TECH AND IOWA STATE - THE SERIESThe Red Raiders will be looking to snap a 14-match losing streak to the Cyclones on Wednesday night as Iowa State has won 16 of the last 17 contests, including a 3-0 sweep on Oct. 2 in the series opener earlier this year in Lubbock. Despite the losing streak, Texas Tech still controls a 20-18 all-time advantage over Iowa State thanks in part to a 10-8 record in matches played in Ames. The Red Raiders have not defeated the Cyclones on the road since Sept. 25, 2004, when Tech held on for a 3-1 vic-tory. Tech’s last win in the series came on Oct. 14, 2006, in a close 3-2 victory in Lubbock. Iowa State has claimed 3-0 sweeps in each of Tech’s last six trips to Hilton Coliseum.

TWO OF THE TOP DIGGING TEAMS IN THE BIG 12 ON DISPLAY WEDNESDAY NIGHTAs was the case in the previous meeting this season between Texas Tech and Iowa State, Wednesday night’s match will feature two of the Big 12’s top digging teams. Iowa State enters this week ranked second in the conference with a 16.08 digs per set average that is just slightly better than Tech’s 16.07 rate so far this season. Oklahoma leads all conference schools, averaging 16.62 digs per frame. Iowa State won the battle for digs earlier this year, totaling 48 to Tech’s 40. The Red Raiders are 25-13 all-time under Don Flora when out-digging their opponent.

BRUMMITT ON PACE FOR YET ANOTHER MEMORABLE SEASONAfter such a memorable debut in scarlet and black a year ago, it may seem difficult to picture Rachel Brummitt duplicat-ing or even surpassing her record-setting numbers from 2012. The junior is well on her way to doing that, though, as she is currently on pace to surpass the 510 digs she recorded a year ago. Brummitt enters this week with 460 digs, currently second-most in Tech single-season history, over 87 total sets, four fewer than from the 2012 season when she had 406 digs through 24 matches. She is averaging 5.29 digs per set which ranks second in the Big 12 this year and is almost a full dig higher than her average at this point a year ago. Brummitt has finished with 20 or more digs 12 times already this year, including a season-high 29 on Sept. 7 against Eastern Washington. She has been in double digits for digs in all but one of Tech’s matches this season as well. BRUMMITT’S PERFORMANCE DURING THE 2012 & 2013 SEASONS Season SP Digs Per Set 2013 Through 24 matches 87 460 5.29 2012 Through 24 matches 91 406 4.46 Through 25 matches 95 423 4.45 Through 26 matches 98 439 4.48 Through 27 matches 101 447 4.43 Through 28 matches 104 459 4.41

BRUMMITT CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER DIGSIn addition to nearing her single-season school record for digs a year ago, Rachel Brummitt is closing in on 1,000 digs for her career as the junior libero enters the Iowa State match with 970 in almost two full seasons. The Plano, Texas native could ap-proach the career category for digs by the end of the year as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place all-time after recording 1,092 digs from 1991-94. Lisa Hilgers is the Texas Tech all-time leader in digs as she totaled 1,583 over her four seasons from 1995-98. No Tech player has ever reached the 1,000 career dig mark in just two seasons as a Red Raider. TEXAS TECH CAREER LEADERS IN DIGS 1. Lisa Hilgers (1995-98) 1,583 2. Ann Romjue (1999-02) 1,520 3. ALLEN BECOMES TEXAS TECH’S OFFENSIVE LEADER IN BIG 12 PLAYSince returning from a preseason injury on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma, Jenna Allen has shown why Don Flora was excited for the South Carolina transfer to debut in scarlet and black. In her eight matches so far this season, Allen has totaled 97 kills, averaging a team-best 3.59 per set during that span. She has led the Red Raiders in kills for five of eight matches, including a career-high 24 in Texas Tech’s 3-2 victory at TCU. The Lewisville, Texas product began her Tech career by connecting on 21 kills against the Sooners, which marked the most for a Red Raider in a Big 12 opener since Kelly Johnson also totaled 21 kills in 2001 against Colorado. Her impressive debut has also focused on the defensive end as well with three double-double performances thanks in part to 63 digs at a 2.33 per set rate. She enters this week ranked fifth in the Big 12 in kills per set for Big 12 matches only and seventh for points per set. TEXAS TECH’S JENNA ALLEN STATS FROM THE 2013 SEASON - Recorded a career-high 24 kills at TCU, the most for a Red Raider this season. - Marked the most kills for a Red Raider against a Big 12 foe since Amanda Dowdy totaled 34 at Colorado on Nov. 20, 2010. - Also marked the most kills for a Big 12 player this season in a conference match. - Was the second time through six matches with at least 20 kills as she posted 21 in season debut on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma. - Her 21 kills at Oklahoma marked the most for a Red Raider in a Big 12 opener since Kelly Johnson also had 21 in 2001. - Recorded three double-doubles so far, which is tied for the second-most among Texas Tech players this season.

DAVID STARTS OFF JUNIOR YEAR IN STYLE For Breeann David, the 2013 season probably couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. The hard-hitting junior has totaled 214 kills in 19 matches this season where she has averaged 3.40 per set, the sixth-highest total currently in the Big 12. The Denver City, Texas native started off the year by posting 10 or more kills in each of the first six matches of the season, the longest streak to start a season since Kelly Johnson did so in the first seven matches of the 2004 season. David, who has missed five matches due to injury and has been limited for parts of Big 12 play, is also third in the Big 12 for points per set (4.11) and sixth for aces per set with 0.29 per frame. DAVID IN THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE & NCAA OFFENSIVE RANKINGS Category Amount Big 12 Rank NCAA Rank Kills per set 3.46 3rd 101st Service aces 18 8th - Aces per set 0.29 9th - Points 259.0 7th - Points per set 4.11 3rd 75th

RED RAIDERS ONE OF TOP DIGGING TEAMS IN THE COUNTRYIn the midst of an injury-filled season, one thing has remained constant for the Red Raiders - their ability to dig. Led by stand-out libero Rachel Brummitt, Texas Tech entered this week ranked 46th in the country and third in the Big 12 Conference with a 16.07 digs per set average. Brummitt has been the driving force behind Tech’s defensive success as the junior is averaging 5.29 digs per set, an average that ranks 16th nationally entering this week. Five different Red Raiders have posted double-doubles so far this season, led by Emily Ruetter’s eight which is one more than her total from a year ago. Tech has already totaled 16 double-doubles this year, two more from its total from the entire 2012 season.

SETTING THE PIPE(R)If the start of the 2013 campaign is any indication, Aubree Piper’s senior season could be a special one. The lone senior on the Texas Tech roster, Piper, who has battled several injuries throughout her career, is Tech’s second-leading offensive player so far this year, totaling 237 kills at a 2.72 per set rate. With eight matches still remaining in the season, Piper has already surpassed her career high in kills as she topped the 156 from her 2012 junior year just a few weeks ago. Her presence in the middle has not just been felt offensively, though, as she has also recorded 48 blocks while adding 14 service aces. The Ama-rillo, Texas native has posted a team-high .276 hitting percentage that ranks just outside the top 10 in the Big 12 entering this week. She is currently on pace to enter the Tech career record book at the end of the season with a .253 hitting percentage over four seasons.

O’CANADA - SEASON TWOFor as much balance as Texas Tech has shown this year offensively, much of the credit belongs to Emily Ruetter. Tech’s first Canadian volleyball athlete since 2007 heads into this week ranked fourth in the Big 12 and 72nd nationally with a 10.24 assists per set average that is a full assist more than her average from her 2012 freshman season. Ruetter has totaled 881 assists through 24 of 32 regular season matches, putting her on pace to potentially become just the fifth Red Raider setter to record more than 1,200 assists. No Tech setter has reached the mark since Laura Grote in 2003 when she dished out 1,276 assists. Ruetter, who has also recorded 10 service aces and 23 blocks, is Tech’s first Canadian-born player since current direc-tor of volleyball operations Amy Gandy (2004-07).

WRAPPING UP THE TCU VICTORY •Marked Texas Tech’s first Big 12 Conference win of the season. •Marked Texas Tech’s first Big 12 road win since defeating West Virginia, 3-1, on Oct. 13 last year in Morgantown. •Marked Texas Tech’s first five-set conference road victory since topping Colorado on Nov. 20, 2010, in Boulder. •Marked the earliest Big 12 win for Tech since 2010 when the Red Raiders edged Kansas, 3-2, in their fifth league match. •Evened the all-time series with TCU at 4-4 entering the Nov. 30 season finale between the two schools in Lubbock. •Tech’s .217 attacking percentage was its highest in a Big 12 match since also hitting .217 on Nov. 14 last year at Texas. •Tech’s 89 digs marked a season high and the fourth-most by a Big 12 team so far this season. •Tech’s 89 digs were its most against a Big 12 foe since totaling 97 in a 3-2 victory over Baylor on Oct. 26, 2011. •Tech had five different players in double figures for digs, led by Rachel Brummitt with a match-high 26 from back row. •Emily Ruetter and Jenna Allen posted double-doubles, their seventh and third ones already this season. •Defeated the Horned Frogs despite Texas Tech’s leading attacker, Breeann David, being limited in the match.

WRIGHT STEPS UP IN TRIP TO INCARNATE WORD, TEXAS STATE Faced with a depleted bench, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora turned to sophomore Emily Wright to fill a void on the outside as the usual defensive specialist turned into a six-rotation player in both matches against Incarnate Word and Texas State. The effort did not go unnoticed, either, as Wright recorded her first career double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs Monday against the Cardinals before coming back the next night to post a career-high 14 digs against Texas State. The Cypress, Texas native returned to being a full-time defensive specialist last week at Oklahoma.

FLORA PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 300 ON OPENING WEEKENDTexas Tech head coach Don Flora earned his 300th career victory at the collegiate level during opening weekend when the Red Raiders dropped Grand Canyon in four sets at the Wildcat invitational. The Red Raiders are now 8-12 on the year, improv-ing Flora’s overall record to 306-110 in 13-plus seasons at both the University of La Verne in California as well as Texas Tech. Flora, arguably one of the winningest active coaches at the Division-I level, led Tech to 29 victories over his first two seasons after inheriting a program that totaled just 30 wins in the five seasons prior to his arrival. The California native currently ranks tied for fifth among Big 12 Conference coaches in career victories, trailing only Ray Bechard (Kansas), Jerritt Elliott (Texas) and Jim Barnes (Baylor) and Santiago Restrepo (Oklahoma). All four coaches have longer career tenures than Flora, who arrived in Lubbock after two seasons as an assistant at New Mexico State and 11 years as the head coach of his alma mater in La Verne where he amassed a 269-59 record (.820 winning percentage) and led the Leopards to the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship. MILLS, BRUMMITT NAMED TO WILDCAT INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMRachel Brummitt and Mikia Mills also earned a selection to the Wildcat Invitational all-tournament team after the two ju-niors helped lead the Red Raiders to a 3-1 showing in the event. Brummitt totaled a team-high 75 digs from the back row, averaging 5.36 per set which ranks third in the Big 12 after one weekend. She ended the tournament with a match-high 26 digs against host Weber State, marking the ninth time in her Tech career where she has reached the 20-dig mark. Mills, meanwhile, connected on 39 kills, second-most on the team, while adding nine digs and 11 blocks to collect her first all-tournament honor of her career. The middle blocker delivered 25 kills over the final two matches, including a career-high 13 in Tech’s four-set victory over Grand Canyon. Teammate Breeann David shared Most Valuable Player honors as well.

ENSCH MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT IN UTAHTexas Tech freshman Courtney Ensch made what seemed to be a smooth transition to collegiate volleyball at the Wildcat Invitational as she connected on 26 kills from the right side while also adding eight digs and five blocks. Ensch, who arrived at Tech from Southlake Carroll High School, had one of the most accurate performances for a Red Raider in recent memory against Grand Canyon as she recorded 12 kills off just 19 attempts. Ensch had only two hitting errors in the match for a .526 hitting percentage, which was the highest for a Red Raider since Lydia McKay totaled the same average on Sept. 14 last year against Houston Baptist. Ensch closed the weekend hitting .327 over 13 sets, the second-highest percentage on the team.

PIPER RETURNS AS TEXAS TECH’S LONE SENIORWhen Aubree Piper looks walks across the court later this season on Senior Night, she will be the only player on Tech’s 19-person roster to receive flowers and framed jersey. The four-year senior, who has started in 52 matches the past three seasons, will be Tech’s leader both on the court and in the locker room for a program that despite returning 12 letterwinners also boasts seven newcomers. Piper enters her senior season with 440 career kills to go along with 174 total blocks and a .242 career hitting percentage. She ended 2012 with a .312 hitting percentage, which ranked ninth in school history for a single season. The Amarillo, Texas native is Tech’s most experienced returner, having played in 72 career matches despite battling various injuries throughout her career.

WHAT CAN BRUMMITT DO NEXT FOR TECH?After a record-breaking inaugural season in scarlet and black, the best question pertaining to Rachel Brummitt might just be what can she do next? The junior libero shattered the Tech single-season record in 2012 with 510 digs from the back row, finishing with 62 more than previous record holder Melissa McGehee (2000). The Plano, Texas native wrapped the 2012 season ranked fourth in the Big 12 for digs per set (4.32), trailing only Kristin Hahn (Iowa State), Brianne Riley (Kansas) and Maria Fernanda (Oklahoma). A similar, if not better, performance this year would already place Brummitt near the top 10 on the Tech career chart as well as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place with 1,092 digs from the 1991-94 seasons. Lisa Hilgers owns the Tech career record for digs after totaling 1,583 from 1995-98 that also ranks ninth in Big 12 history entering the 2013 season as well.

THE DENVER CITY HAMMERNot shy from coining nicknames, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora has long referred to junior outside hitter Breeann David as the “Denver City Hammer.” Named for both her hometown of nearby Denver City, Texas, as well as her hard-hitting ability, David enters her junior season as one of Tech’s key offensive weapons after she led the team with a 2.77 kills per set average a year ago. David, a six-rotation player normally, totaled 213 digs in 2012 despite missing six matches due to an ankle injury that sidelined her early into Big 12 play. David, who comes from a family of Texas Tech athletes, has also posted 239 digs and 135 blocks over her first two seasons in scarlet and black. Her father, Stan David, was a standout football player for the Red Raiders and eventual 1984 NFL Draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. Her mother, Megan David (formerly McGuire), also starred on the volleyball team while at Tech where she still ranks in the top 10 in most career blocking categories. Her younger brother, Clancy David, is also a walk-on football team currently at Tech.

ALLEN EXPECTED TO BOOST RED RAIDER ATTACK ON OUTSIDELike David, Texas Tech is also expecting sophomore transfer Jenna Allen to become an immediate presence on the outside as the newcomer joined the program last spring after spending the 2012 season at South Carolina. Allen appeared in 30 matches while making nine starts for the Gamecocks where she finished fourth on the team with 122 kills while also adding a 102 digs from the back row. Allen is one of two transfers for the Red Raiders from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), join-ing Lauren Douglass who arrived this fall from Ole Miss.

HINNEBURG NAMED BIG 12 PRESEASON CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEARTexas Tech freshman Victoria Hinneburg was named the Big 12 Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year prior to the season, marking the first time a Red Raider has ever garnered the award. Hinneburg, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is just the third Red Raider to earn a conference preseason award, joining Colleen Smith (1999) and Justine Young (2010) who were both named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. One of the top international prospects in the 2013 class, Hinneburg will give Tech plenty of size and ability for the years to come as she is the tallest Red Raider listed on the roster at 6-4. Hinneburg shared the award with Kansas State’s Katie Brand.

RED RAIDERS WELCOME SEVEN NEWCOMERS TO THE ROSTERTexas Tech welcomes seven newcomers to its roster this fall with three being transfer players in Jenna Allen, Carlie Foust and Lauren Douglass. The Red Raiders also added four freshmen in Katie Daffer, Courtney Ensch, Marguerite Grubb and Victoria Hinneburg. Tech’s seven-player recruiting has been described as the most talented in Don Flora’s three-year tenure at Texas Tech. 2013 TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL NEWCOMERS Name POS YEAR Hometown Jenna Allen OH SO Lewisville, Texas Katie Daffer MB/RS FR Austin, Texas Lauren Douglass MB/RS RS FR Flower Mound, Texas Courtney Ensch RS FR Southlake, Texas Carlie Foust DS SO Amarillo, Texas Marguerite Grubb SET FR Houston, Texas Victoria Hinneburg RS/MB FR Leipzig, Germany

RED RAIDERS TO MAKE FIRST-EVER APPEARANCE ON ESPNThe Texas Tech volleyball program will face Iowa State in front of a national television audience on Oct. 30 as the Red Raiders and Cyclones were picked prior to the season to appear on ESPNU as part of the Big 12 Conference’s television schedule for the 2013 season. The match is part of a Big 12 double-header on the network as Baylor and Kansas will face off at 6 p.m. CT in Lawrence before the Red Raiders and Cyclones open with an 8 p.m. first serve later in the evening at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. This will be Tech’s first ever appearance on an ESPN network (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU). The Red Raiders are 20-17 all-time against the Cyclones and 10-8 when playing in Ames.

DOUGLASS TO SIT OUT 2013 SEASONRedshirt freshman Lauren Douglass will sit out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer policy. Douglass, a native of Flower Mound, Texas, transferred to Tech from Ole Miss where she redshirted the 2012 campaign while recovering from injury. She will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2014 season.

BIG 12 CONTINUES TO BE AMONG TOP VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCESThe Big 12 will once again be one of the toughest volleyball conferences nationally this season as the league is boosted by preseason favorite and top-ranked Texas, while No. 15 Iowa State and No. 20 Kansas are also ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA preseason poll. Both Oklahoma and Kansas State received votes in the poll as well. The Big 12 has earned five or more bids to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons with Texas claiming the national title from a year ago.

RED RAIDERS PICKED TO FINISH TIED FOR 7TH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLLTexas Tech was picked to finish tied for seventh in the Big 12 preseason poll that is voted on annually by the conference coaches. It was the highest preseason nod for the Red Raiders since 2001 when Tech was selected to finish sixth in what was then an 11-team league. The Red Raiders 19 points to finish tied for seventh with TCU while West Virginia rounded out the poll in ninth place. Texas was named the preseason favorite as the defending national champions garnered eight of nine first-place votes to sit in front of Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Baylor. OCT. 2, 2013 RECAPLUBBOCK, Texas - Mackenzie Bigbee connected on 17 kills while Ciara Capezio added 12 Wednesday to help No. 25 Iowa State spoil Texas Tech’s Big 12 Conference home opener with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-12, 25-13) at the United Spirit Arena.

The Cyclones (8-4; 2-0) remained undefeated early in league play after holding the Red Raiders (7-10; 0-2) to their lowest hitting percentage of the season, a .039 average that fea-tured 19 hitting errors, 15 of which that came in the final two sets.

“It was a difficult night for us,” Tech head coach Don Flora said. “You have to give credit to Iowa State. They played a great match and are a true top-25 team. We have some work to do to get ready for this weekend, but I still like this team and know they will compete.”

Bigbee and Capezio were both accurate from the field for the Cyclones, who totaled a .279 hitting percentage as a team that was the second-highest for a Tech opponent this year. Bigbee and Capezio both hit .330 or better overall after combining for half of Iowa State’s swings.

Tech and Iowa State went back-and-forth early in the first set before the Cyclones took the early lead thanks to a 6-2 run to end the frame. The Cyclones held the Red Raiders to a negative hitting percentage over the next two sets to end the match.

Iowa State finished with 46 kills, approximately twice as many as Tech. It was the fewest kills for the Red Raider at-tack since also totaling 23 on Nov. 3 last year at Iowa State.

Breeann David led the Red Raiders with eight kills, six of which that came in the first set alone. Aubree Piper and Katie Daffer added six and four kills for Tech as well while setter Emily Ruetter finished with 21 assists to go along with three digs.

One of the more interesting position battles heading into the match was the play of Kristen Hahn and Tech’s Rachel Brummitt, the top two liberos in the Big 12 for digs per set.

The pair were both steady throughout with Brummitt re-cording a match-high 13 digs followed right behind by Hahn with 12. Iowa State out-dug the Red Raiders, 49-40, in the match and controlled an 8-2 advantage in blocks as well.

Breeann David (pictured below) will try to boost a Texas Tech attack that connected on just 23 kills in its last meeting with Iowa State. David led all Red Raiders with eight kills in that match.
