Turkey. Current situation

Turkey has experienced the best economical growth in its history.

The population has also increased.

More modern transportation is needed to facilitate the economical growth.

The TCDD program comprises the

enlargement of Turkish railway network

to 25.940 km by constructing 10.000 km

of HSLs and 4.000 km conventional

lines till 2023.

Turkish Railways modernization The plans of TCDD (Turkish Railways) include the modernization of

the conventional network as well as building a new high speed network.

To do that, TCDD is doing among others, the following actions:

• Renewing the track

• Railways Electrification

• New signalling systems, including electronic interlockings and ETCS.

• New telecommunication systems

• New rolling stock

• Renew the main stations

• Upgrade or build logistics centres

ERTMS Rollout in Turkey

Currently there is no ATP legacy system.

This issue makes easier the transition to a new ATP system.

The standard solution for both High Speed and Conventional Lines is:

• To equip ETCS Level 2 as main system and a simplified ETCS Level 1 as fallback.

• Trains to be upgraded with ETCS onboard included in projects

• GSM-R deployment included in the projects.

Marmaray Project Project Description: Upgrading of the existing commuter rail system on

either side of the Istanbul Strait and the construction of a railway tunnel under the Strait. The new/upgraded railway system will extend for approximately 77 km, between the stations of Gebze on the Asian side of Istanbul and Halkali on the European side.

The Project is divided into three components:

The Bosphorus Crossing (BC) Contract (BC1), of approximate overall length 14 kilometres, comprising an immersed tunnel under the seabed of the Istanbul Strait and its approach tunnels, together with three underground stations and one surface station along the length of the approach tunnels. Contract with completion anticipated in late 2013;

The Rolling Stock (CR2) Contract. This Contract, awarded to Hyundai-Rotem Company of Korea, is currently in progress with delivery of all rolling stock scheduled by the end of 2013, and

The Commuter Rail (CR3) Contract, awarded to INVENSYS RAIL.

Marmaray Project

Transportation time between two sides of the Strait will be 4 min.

Transportation time between Gebze and Halkali will be 105 min.

75.000 passengers/hour on single direction

Historic projects joining the two Turkish sides.

5 Conclusions

Page 20: Invensys and the Invensys logo are trade marks of Invensys … · Invensys and the Invensys logo Slide 1 18 March, 2012 Invensys proprietary & confidential are trade marks of Invensys

Conclusions Turkey has embraced the ERTMS as a key element of their railway

modernization. For many reasons:

Guarantees the safety level

Fixes current obsolescence problems with legacy systems

Facilitates better railway operation and maintenance

Take advantage from the current developments in a bigger scale market (Europe)

Benefit from multi-vendor environment (most of the UNIFE companies are present)

Continuous technology improvement

Continuous standard improvement

There is over 2,000 km of lines in service or contracted with ETCS. In the next 5 years other 3,000 km will be equipped.

TCDD is becoming in one of the biggest users of ETCS.
