COMMUNICATION SOCIETY CHAPTER BANGALORE

Formed in 2008 by an initiative from Prof T Srinivas, IISc, ComSoc Bangalore chapter has

evolved and currently enjoys around 280 members from academia and industry. Today, the

ComSoc Bangalore chapter is one of the most vibrant and dynamic chapters with a large

number of expert volunteers performing diverse tasks for the growth of the society and lives

of the people. ComSoc is well supported by Bangalore section. ComSoc Bangalore Chapter

is known for the quality event. A huge support is extended to ComSoc chapter and

volunteers by industry around.

ANNUAL REPORT

This is the first time that ComSoc Chapter Bangalore planned to have Annual general meeting (AGM). It is

planned to conduct alongside the Bangalore Section AGM. We are thankful to Section Chair Prof Debabrata

Das, the Secretary B N Pal and Vice Chair, Mr Puneet Mishra who agreed to our proposal and extended

space/facility at the venue to conduct the AGM.

The main objective of this meeting is the participation of each member. Taking inputs from Fellow and Senior

people to understand the working environment of the society. To know from them; how to work together, what

to be done to help the technology and society, how to contribute for better living and how ComSoc Bangalore

can play a role in doing better. Such inputs from senior people would encourage the young professional and

students to get involved and do better.

In this report, we present our achievements, our engagements and the financial status.

We are currently around 280 members out of which around 50 are student members and graduate student

members. We have currently 4- Fellow status who could be our guardian. We have many eligible people who

could be elevated to Fellow status and definitely, we would help them to apply. Section conducts FINE

program SIMPLE program to help all the members and eligible members to get elevated.

Our industry outreach program is also reasonably good. We would need more interaction and increase the

cooperation with Industry.

We have to work more on increasing awareness among students. This would be possible with having more

ComSoc Student Branch Chapters in the student branch.

We have started, let us continue to do better.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

ComSoc extends the sincere and hearty thank to Bangalore Section ExCom members for their support and

special thanks to Chair, Secretary and Vice Chair. They open heartedly extended the support to chapter. We

also thank Munir, the IEEE office who is really always with us to support what ever we need. Last but not the

list, chapter is for all the members, let us thank each other.

2017 COMSOC CHAPTER EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Since the reformation of ExCom from March 2017, ComSoc has been doing exceptionally

well. We have the members very rich in experience from both Industry and academia. In

fact, good in number as well, but they are all very active. ExCom agreed to take some new

initiatives apart from doing things which are necessary and required. Some of the new

initiatives like organizing events outside Bangalore (completed two this year), Research

methodology workshop series, nomination for distinguished award worldwide etc. are taken

by the team. Though some of these exercises are not only expensive but time consuming as

well. But, team agreed to do and did very well in the first year.

ComSoc account via NetSuite has been brought to use after lot of updates with IEEE HQ

Finance and now being updated regularly. NetSuite is now in operation and well balanced.

One of the other significant initiatives of formation of ISCAT (IEEE Smart City Advisory

Team) and signing of MoU with Smart City India Forum (SCIF) should be appreciated.

Reaching out to student branch (SB) to start student branch ComSoc chapters, offering

support for this resulting in two new student branch chapters (SBCs). Industry collaboration,

visibility to global level is another milestone on ComSoc this year.

ComSoc started its Bi-annually NewsLetter and first edition was circulated on 1st May, is yet

another new initiatives. Very rich in contents starting from our events, achievements, future

events, some very informative invited articles job information both national and

internationals were included. In addition, we also got advertisement page on paid basis.

Mathworks requested to print half a page advertisement inside the newsletter.

Another important initiative pushed forward by Chair and well supported by previous chair

and all members is the conduction of international workshop on 5G Wireless Technology in

association with IEEE ANTS. With last year 10th ANTS edition, a proposal was submitted to

ANTS organizing committee to include some workshop in association with it. The discussion

came out with 5G Wireless Technology Challenges and Opportunities (5G WiTCO). It was a

huge success and well accepted by audience as well as organizers. They asked us to take it

forward. However, a fresh proposal with a slight name change with new title as 5G and

Future Wireless Technologies (5G-FWT 2017) is being conducted on 19 December at

Bhubaneswar (http://ants2017.ieee-comsoc-ants.org/workshops/5gfwt/) .We made

significant progress with call for papers and 5 of the reviewed and accepted papers have

been registered. This workshop is being organized by ComSoc Chair, Dr Navin, his working

colleagues Dr Arpita and Dr Ashutosh, IEEE 5G Initiative Co-Chair.

Our ExCom member‟s standard development proposal on ROOF Computing has also been

accepted and working group is already formed. In addition, standards on Power Line

Communication (PLC) is being evaluated by ComSoc members here in Bangalore (worth to

mention this).

In one other measure and initiative to meet the quality of conference being conducted and

the quality of papers being accepted, ComSoc decided to screen properly the application for

technical sponsorship for the conference and support them to get skilled by taking active

part as TPC Co-chairs and Publication Co-Chairs. We did this with 3 conference requests

from 3 different colleges.

We are also progressing as Student Branch Chapter. This year, we have formed at least two

new SBCs. Coming year, we may plan 2-3 more. We welcome the initiative by faculty

advisor at Institution to start ComSoc student branch chapter.

With advancements to social media, chapter has invested time and resources to keep its

website updated and started Facebook feeds which is active now. This has enabled many of

our members to stay connected.

INDUSTRY CONNECT & STANDARDIZATION PROGRAM

INDUSTRY CONNECT PROGRAM

There's a Industry Connect program that has been started on Power Line Communications

(IEEE 1901) in Bangalore. This is being led by Dr. Mohankumar and has been now

supported by ST Micro and BESCOM. Some of the ComSoc members are part of this

program. Interested person can visit the link and get in touch to know more.

https://standards.ieee.org/develop/indconn/powerline/index.html

STANDARDIZATION ACTIVITY

Mr. Syam’s proposal on ROOF Computing has been accepted by IEEE standardization and

he is leading this group. He has over 60 contributing members globally. Anyone interested

to participate and contribute, please contact.

CONFERENCE SUPPORT AND TECHNICAL SPONSORSHIP

Chapter is very keen and concern on quality of conference and especially the papers being accepted in the conference and published. The quality needs to be improved. At the same time, we have to promote and encourage colleges/industry/organizations to conduct and

Page 12: IEEE ComSoc Bangalore Chapter Annual Report 2017bangalore.chapters.comsoc.org/files/2018/01/ComSoc-AGM-Jan-7-2018.pdf · Nimbalker Vandana Member P S Bhat Chandrashekha r Thejaswi

11

organize events. To balance the two and mostly check the quality, chapter decided to take active part in technical sponsored conference. Therefore, it was decided that ComSoc will technically sponsor the conference of colleges provided at least tow of the ExCom members are in the organizing team especially TPC Co-Chair and Publication Co-Chair. With this condition, we have approved 3 requests that came forward this year. One at RNSIT, Reva University and One at Vemana Institute of Technology. However, the last one is yet to get clearance from the Section.

(I) Technical Sponsorship for the 2nd International Conference on Advances in Electronics, Computers and Communication (ICAECC 2018) to be organized by Reva University, 9-10 Feb, 2018, Bangalore

(II) Technical Sponsorship for Second International conference on Circuits, controls and communications” (CCube 2017) on December 15-16, 2017

NEW INITIATIVES

This year, the chapter has taken few new initiatives and some of them found to be of great

use. The followings are the highlight:

Formation of IEEE Smart City Advisory Team (ISCAT) and MoU with Smart City India

Forum.

Organizing event outside Bangalore – Two successful events conducted this year;

one at Mysore and other at Devanagere.

Launching of ComSoc Newsletter, bi-annual newsletter is brought and circulated as

soft copy to IEEE members and non members

Nominations of our national and local achiever at IEEE Global – We have also

initiated and started nominating our local achievers at global level. This year, we did

for 3 of our members. Hope, we get some global recognition.

Workshop on 5G and Future Wireless Technologies (5G-FWT) in association with

reputed and portfolio events of IEEE , i.e IEEE ANTS.
