• I t can be received more completely or less completely.

Two meanings of reading

• Reading for information– When we first read, we understand easily.

– We get information or facts from reading.

– This increases our store of information.

– Our level of understanding is the same as before.

• Reading for understanding– When we first read, we don’t understand the

book completely.

– This throws a new light on all the facts we already know.

– Our level of understanding goes up.

Reading for understanding is possible when…

• The book has something that can increase the readers’ understanding.

• The readers are able to understand.

To read for understanding

• We need to know – Who they are

(those who have something that can increase our understanding)

– How to learn from them(how to receive what they conveyed)(= how to read)

Three goals of reading

• For information– Much easier than for understanding

• For understanding– Main focus of this book!

• For entertainment– Different kind

Two kinds of learning

• To be informed– To know that something is the case.
