ContentsContentsA leading cultural and

educational institution entering its fifth decade, Colorado Public Radio (CPR)expands our worldview each day through the art of storytelling.

During the past year, CPR conducted an extensive eval-uation of our mission, vision and values. After taking stock, it was clear that our purpose remains steadfast—Colorado Public Radio exists to enrich the community through news, information and music.

CPR continues its commit-ment to journalistic excellence, responding to the needs of our community and reflecting the stories, conversations and music of diverse cultures. These values will guide us as we fulfill and extend our mission into the future.

In just the last year, we’ve made huge strides towards becoming a more compre-hensive resource —embracing Colorado’s music world with the first full year of new music on OpenAir and expanding in-depth Colorado news cov-erage. This growth is possible thanks to you —our vibrant community of individuals, businesses and foundations that enable us to set the bar high for achievement.

We’ve come a long way from a one-signal radio station in 1970, to the statewide news, classical and new-music service we are today. We hope

you’ve enjoyed the journey as much as we have. Please join us as we celebrate our mission and another year as a cultural institution that nourishes the heart, mind and soul of Colorado.

MindMind SoulSoulCPR provides in-depth news and information for people who value life-long learning. Whether it’s national or global coverage from NPR and the BBC, regional reporting, thoughtful interviews on “Colorado Matters,” or reaching out through the Public Insight Network, CPR News engages people each day through the exploration of complex issues and the world around us.

COLORADO COVERAGE

Endorsements from leading community foundations in Colorado have enabled CPR to substantially increase dedicated beat reporting on critical issues. The Colorado Health Foundation has funded

CPR’s health reporter position since 2007, and the Gates Family Foundation and The Piton Foundation joined forces in 2011 to back CPR’s education reporter position.

In January, 2013, Colorado Public Radio received a three-year $900,000 grant from the

Bonfils-Stanton Foundation to fund CPR’s first compre-hensive multi-media news bureau covering the arts. Coverage will range from previews and feature stories about major cultural and arts organizations, to funding for the arts. Reviews, inter-views, audio and video, and events will all be part of the multi-media digital presence.

AWARDS

Each year, CPR is recognized for excellence in journalism. In the past year, CPR News received a total of 15 local, regional and national journal- ism awards from respected media institutions, including Edward R. Murrow, National Education Reporting, Colorado

Broadcasters Association, National Headliner, Colorado Associated Press Broadcasters Association, and the Public Radio News Directors In- corporated. Three awards acknowledged outstanding reporting in daily newscasts, coverage of the Aurora theater shooting, the Waldo Canyon fire and a report on Colorado’s ethics commission. CPR’s education coverage received five awards alone.

LOOKING AHEAD

There has never been a more exciting time for CPR to help strengthen Colorado’s place in the world and contribute to a more informed and enlightened society.

OPEN AIR

When Colorado Public Radio launched OpenAir in the fall of 2011, the goal was a natu-ral extension of our mission: provide a thoughtful, curated new-music experience, guidedby knowledgeable hosts and

the spirit of Colorado’s thriving music scene.

The enthusiasm and cama- raderie that embraced OpenAir during its first full year demonstrated the momentum behind creating a home for Colorado’s new music culture. By collaborat-ing with talented artists and leaders in the local music community, OpenAir expand- ed horizons through live, one-of-a-kind broadcasts, connecting online, meeting face-to-face at events, and hosting over 140 performances in our state-of-the-art CPR Performance Studio.

CPR CLASSICAL

CPR has a long history and connection with the Colorado classical music community. This year marked the 10-year anniversary of “Colorado Spotlight” and a decade of partnering with organizations like the Colorado Symphony, Opera Colorado, Central City Opera, Bravo! Vail, the

Colorado Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. More than 400 artists have visited the CPR Performance Studio, sharing intimate performances and insight into the repertoire.

Recognized nationally, Colorado’s classical summer festival tradition is featured in CPR’s annual “SummerFest” series. The 2013 showcase featured an expanded lineup of previews, interviews and live broadcasts with unprecedented access to the Colorado Music Festival, Bravo! Vail, Central City Opera and the Aspen Music Festival.

TOGETHER

As we explore the vision of classical and new music in Colorado, CPR serves as a gathering place and source of inspiration for a rising generation of musicians and artists.

Two sides of a coin and champions for Colorado’s music community, CPR Classical and OpenAir reflect the cultural richness of our home. Together, they capture Colorado’s distinct voice and the essence behind the discovery and exploration of important music.

CommunityPUBLIC INSIGHT NETWORK

CPR was among the first to pilot the Public Insight Network (PIN) when it launched in 2007. Developed by Minnesota Public Radio and American Public Media, 6,000 Coloradans have joined this growing online Rolodex to share their work/life experiences on topics ranging from health care and edu-cation, to immigration and racial disparities. Over the last year, PIN helped develop emerging and ongoing Col-orado news coverage for the 2012 presidential election, gun violence following the Aurora theater and Newtown, Conn., shootings, and the passage of civil union legis- lation in Colorado.

ONLINE

As we increasingly live our lives in the digital space, whether it’s our website, Facebook, Twitter, Insta-gram or YouTube, CPR is constantly looking for new ways to meet and en-gage people where they are.

Fueled by real-time updates from hosts and people behind the programming, CPR’s social media communities have ex-perienced exponential growth with over 18,000 followers inspiring the curious to join the community conversation.

IN PERSON

OpenAir’s spotlight on Colorado’s thriving music scene has paved the way for more meaningful en-gagement. From a constant stream of local and national talent performing in the

Colorado Public Radio convenes the distinct voices that define a community—newsmakers and civic leaders, musicians and performers, and private citizens—building connections and strengthening understanding through the discovery and exchange of ideas.

CPR Performance Studio, to an OpenAir-curated listening station at Twist & Shout, to hosts mixing and mingling at events like Raise the Roof, and Tweeting and broadcasting live from the Underground Music Showcase—CPR is finding new opportunities to build personal connections in the community.

IN THE CLASSROOM

Coloradans showed their support for music education during the 2013 Instrument Drive by donating 840 flutes, clarinets, trumpets, violins, and other band and orchestra instruments. CPR worked with The Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology to refurbish the instruments and with Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation to match them to schools and community music

programs in need. Since 2009,more than 1,500 instruments have been distributed to 90 elementary, middle and high schools as well as organizations that support music education in Colorado, ensuring thousands of students across the state can participate in music programs for years to come.Ph
