How to View and Use the “Featured Works” in Option One
The featured works listed in Option One are all linked to internet websites where you can view the paintings online. The
links are also listed along with the options so if you print out the pages, you can still manually type in the web address for
the paintings.
To view a featured work, sometimes you will need to look for the specific artist and then click the particular painting you
are looking to view. Most images you can click to enlarge them for a better viewing size.
You can right click on the painting with your mouse and copy it to your desktop to print it out. In most cases, it is
permissible to download one copy for study purposes. You can print out the artwork, slip it into a page protector, and then
keep it in a binder to review from time to time. Printing the paintings out in a 4 inch by 6 inch size is an economical way to
provide art prints. This is a good size for your art notebook as well.
You can also make the featured work your computer’s wallpaper background and view it for a week. You do this by right
clicking the image and then choosing to set the image as your desktop wallpaper. This has been a successful method in
many families and made the paintings more prominent in your home.
In the Appendix of Harmony Fine Arts there is an art print for each artist studied. You can view these right from the
eBook page or you can print the page out on your color printer.
Steps for Picture Study in any of the Three Options 1. Choose the painting to be viewed.
2. Have the child sit quietly and look at the painting.
3. After a time of looking, hide the painting from view and ask your child to tell you what he remembers about the
painting.
4. That's it. It is as simple as that.
5. To extend the activity for older students, you may have them sketch the painting from memory.
Additional approaches to viewing the artwork For a more general approach to picture study you could use the following suggestions:
1. Ask the child to look carefully at the work of art.
2. Have a discussion with your child about the artwork.
3. You can prompt your child with the following questions if they are having trouble discussing the painting.
What colors do you see?
What objects can you see in the painting?
What is going on in the artwork?
Is the work of art true-to-life?
What ideas or emotions do you think this work is trying to express?
Do you like this piece of art and why or why not?
Do you like this artwork more now than you did when you first saw it?
4. Have the child write a review of the painting for their notebook.
5. Sketching the painting is always a good challenge for older students. After sketching, you can have them put their
artwork in their art binder alongside a print of the original.
