Edinburgh College offers a range of courses, working in a live, realistic environment in our professional training salons to get you ready for a career in hairdressing, beauty or complementary therapies.

Our hair & beauty training academies will provide you with the practical skills you need to prepare you for your career. You will gain real work experience, learning on the job and developing your hairdressing and beauty skills at our state of the art salons on campus using top industry brands including Elemis, Dermalogica and Wella.

Hairdressing & beauty is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK. Whether you choose to work in a salon or start your own business, Edinburgh College is the place to learn. You can even start your training with us on a schools college partnership programme and progress on to study to HND level in the area that interests you most.

Edinburgh College training salons are designed to give students the best experience to ensure they are fully competent for the industry. Students participate in our evening employability salons performing the latest treatments and services using prestigious products that are well known in the industry.

Edinburgh College hairdressing & beauty students continually raise money for charity. Last year over a 3 month period our student raised more than £3,500 for good causes in Edinburgh, with their 2016 charity roadshow giving people in need hair & beauty treatments to lift their spirits. The money raised went to the charities they visited including MND Scotland, Breast Cancer Care, Marie Curie, When You Wish upon a Star, Save the Children and Little Princess Trust.

HAIRDRESSING & BEAUTY FACILITIESEdinburgh College is one of only 2 Scottish colleges to be recognised as a Wella Centre of Excellence, and is the first flagship Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) College in Scotland. These professional recognitions highlight the exceptional standards of facilities we can offer and training we provide to our learners.

We work closely with high-end brands, such as Elemis, Dermalogica and Wella, this enables us to provide our learners with the best product and treatment training possible for their future.

In 2014 Edinburgh College became Scotland’s first ‘eco’ college hair and beauty academy. The new Elemis & Wella Academy is the first of its kind to provide a range of environmental features, including special filtration hoods that extract particles from the atmosphere to improve the air quality within the salon. This enables students who suffer from asthma to work.

The academy also offers a Nioxin clinic, in conjunction with Wella. Our specially trained students work within the clinic, to provide thorough consultation which focuses on hair and scalp conditions where they advise clients on effective solutions. This specialist clinic is one of the first to be built in a college environment.

This year we are proud to have launched our Aesthetic Beauty Clinic, where therapists perform the latest cosmetic skin peels, microdermabraison and learn all about non-surgical facial therapies. This new addition to our area is open both day and evening with Level 3 and HND students practicing and perofrming these popular advanced skin therapies.

PARTNERS

Hairdressing and Beauty students continually host events throughout the year. Visit the training salons website page or follow us on Facebook to be kept up to date with events and offers.

In 2016 our HNC Beauty Therapy students worked closely with Edinburgh based charity Changing Faces Scotland, aiding those with facial disfigurements. The students held a pamper day in which nearly £600 was raised in just one day. Level 3 Beauty students also backed the charity's pledge campaign in which they were committed to respecting #faceequality in everything that they do. They would challenge bias and discrimination and treat all staff and customers equally and fairly whatever the appearance of their face or body. This was later featured on the charity's website.

Beauty students used their spraypaint skills for a showbiz challenge on BBC One’s The One Show.

Beauty Therapy students helped presenter Dom Littlewood test spray guns for painting fences. They were enlisted for the consumer challenge for their spraypaint expertise and filmed the section in the summer at Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

Our barbers regularly visit the Salvation Army Hostel in Edinburgh. This gives the residents who are homeless a chance to be treated to a haircut and beard trim The students enjoy going out into the community and gain a lot from the experience and all the students find this rewarding.

Our new academy will accommodate any skills gaps and allow candidates the option to take on extra training with the delivery of short 1-2 day courses on a variety of current trends and therapies popular to our industry. These certificated, stand-alone courses are optional courses for our students and will enhance their skills and employability opportunities.

In June 2017 a group of our barbering students set up shop as part of the Scottish National Portrait Galleries’ Razor’s Edge outreach project. The project accompanied Looking Good: The Male Gaze from Van Dyck to Lucian Freud, an exhibition of 400 years of male style icons.

The event was targeted towards young men, however all visitors to the gallery were welcomed to chat about their appearance, to identity with the male image over the centuries, whilst enjoying a free haircut in the barber’s chair by our student barbers.

Daniel Warren’s documentary film gets ‘up close and personal’ with those in the barber’s chair and can be viewed at the following:
