Based on universal values and on values that derive from jewish tradition, Habonim Dror Uruguay was founded in the year 1956 on the basis of Solidarity, Comradeship, Democracy and Social Justice, always educating towards the development of enterprising, critic and active young men and women. We aspire to be a Tnua that`s a leader by its activism in our community, organizing activities of great meaning for the education of our Chaverim. Every Saturday we organize educational and recreational activites for approximately 200 Chaverim between the ages of 4 and 21. The activities are held in our own ken, and they follow a specially designed educational program, which emphasizes our main values and contents. This way every kid between 4 and 16 years old are organized in groups according to their age, and recieve activities from their madrichim, who work voluntarily. We srongly believe in the fight against assimilation in Uruguay, and that`s why we count with a project which`s main goal is to bring near families that have been away from judaism, through meetings and giving them reading material so they can celebrate jaguim and shabat. In summer all the Chaverim participate in our great year event, the Machane Kaitz, a scoutic summer camp. This camp is the ideal framework to strengthen the educational contents transmitted along the year and the sense of beloning to our movement. In order to carry out their tasks the better way possible, our madrichim are prepared permanently, through leadership courses, seminars, trainings and activities held at our house. In addition, most of them travel to Israel, and take part in a one year programin which they have the opportunity to experience a collective way of living, spending 4 months in a kibbutz, where they learn hebrew and work in several places.

The next 2 months are spent working as volunteers in non formal educational places with ethiopian kids or teaching english to arab children, living meanwhile in an urban comuna in the south of the country. The last 5 months are dedicated to study in an education and leadership center in Jerusalem. In Montevideo (Uruguay`s capital city) we have our Ken, called Ken Igal Alon ve Itzjak Rabin, named after these personalities of Israel`s politic, who faught for peace and the wellbeing of their people.

Habonim Dror Brazil is the biggest and strongest jewish youth movement in the country. There are 7 snifim: Recife, Salvador, Río de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, San Pablo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre, where 450 chaverim attend every Saturday. Our work focuses in young jews from 6 to 22 years old, and takes place in two levels: locally and in the Snif Artzit. The shichavot are divided in: - Shichvot Tzeirot: Chalutzim, Guiborim, Tzofim, Solelim and Solelim Alef Beit. - Shichvot Bogrot: Bonim, Mordim, and Maapilim Magshimim. Alter the year in Magshimim (18 and 19 year olds) we have the Shnat Hachshara, main part of our educational process. Durin this year, our Javerim learn so they can come back and turn into Bogrim, each one in their own snif and also at a national level. Locally, we run weekly activities aiming kids from 6 to 13 years old, and for this age group we have 2 local machanot (choref and kaitz) in each city. Also we often take part in different projects and local community events. At Artzi level, we work in the homogeneity of the snifim, for which we count with the Hagshem Project, that is a group of tochniot specifically designed for each shichva. With this, we make sure that the chinuch process that occurs in all Brazil is the same. This help us achieve the goal of national unity, according to which we are all under the same rules, mentioned in our statutes, and we base our educational work in our “Educational Tora”, document that deals with thinkers as Piaget, Janusz Korczak, Paulo Freire, and others. Even at nacional level we have our Artzi framworks: every 2 years we do 2 machanot (choref and kaitz), Haboniadas (sport and cultural event, created in honor of a chanicha from the Snif Curitiba that passed away in Shnat) and a “Peguishat Hanagot) where each hanaga from each city get together. This year, in addition to the work at national level we are building a much stronger relation with Habonim Dror Argentina and Uruguay. At the beggining of 2009 we had the “Seminar Jazon” and an Hanagot seminar in march, where the 3 countries participated in order to think ideas and projects together. This is still a new relation… One last thing is that this year the construction of a new Snif in Manaus began. It has been a while since the jewish community in Manaus and Habonim Dror are strengthening bonds. The reality is that this community lacks youth movements, most of its young population don`t take part in community activities and the future for this community is uncertain.

That`s why we were very interested to set up Habonim Dror there, to cover this necessity of jewish education, and why we took this challenge.

Habonim Dror will make sure tha jewish tradition isn`t lost and that they can get in touch with other brazilian jews as well. After meeting with de President of CIAM (Jewish Community of Amazonas), we finalized the agreement. We held 2 workshops to train madrichim, future founders of the Snif Manaus, one in september and other in october. Luckily, we came across with people very commited to the cause; the activities with children are starting in a few days and some Chaverim already participated from our Machane Artzit. We are very excited with this new Snif, being a project that took a lot of work and effort, but very rewarding. The last Snif created had been “Belo Horizonte” in 1982, so it makes very interesting for the new generations to experiment the creation of a new Snif.

At Habonim Dror North America this year we are thrilled to be celebrating our 75th anniversary! Though we’ve changed a lot over the years our essence remains true to our roots, and this is nowhere more evident than in our pride and joy, our undeniable anchor, our seven Machanot Kayitz. From California and British Columbia in the West, to Michigan and Ontario in the center, and out to New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland in the East, our Machanot envelop over 1300 chevrei tnua in a loving, energetic, and creative Jewish environment for anywhere from two weeks to two months. This has been a proud year for Habonim Dror Kenim across all of North America, with over 150 ken events taking place in 15 different cities. And this was also a year of looking ahead as for the first time each of the Machanot participated in one of three regional Hadracha Seminars: West Coast, East Coast, and Midwest. As we approach the 75th year of Habonim in North America, we anxiously prepare for a year of even greater success, with new projects in Philadelphia and DC, a new ken in Boston, and much much more.

Habonim-Dror BeHolland is one of the many branches of the world famous socialist-zionist youth movement. Founded after the Second World War, with the help of the British Habonim-branch, Habonim-Dror BeHolland became one of the bigger Habo-countries in the world. With almost 400 members (including approximately 80 active madrichim), a shlicha and a beautiful moadon in Amsterdam, it is the biggest Jewish youth movement in the Netherlands. Habonim-Dror BeHolland organizes two machanot (choref and kayits), five weekends, two madrichimseminars, a Passover seder and pe’ulot every two weeks. Furthermore, Habonim-Dror BeHolland organizes the yearly Israel tour, the chazon seminar and madrichimtours to Israel. This year, we have eight shnatties in Israel, which is a lot for our relatively small branch, without a clear shnat hachsharah-culture. Our chanichim are divided into JK’s (JK stands for Youth Camp, because in the early days, kvutzot had their own machanot): JK1: 7-9 years old (amelim) JK2: 9-11 years old (amelim) JK3: 11-13 years old (chotrim) JK4: 13-15 years old (chotrim) JK5: ± 16 years old (Israel tour group) JK6: ± 17 years old (bonim) Madrichim are between 18 and 25 years old. We organize a lot of activities to improve the team spirit. We do Shabbat dinners together, we organize seminars and lectures, and go on machanot earlier to prepare pe’ulot and have fun. The precamps are always very good for the atmosphere. The movement is lead by a mazkirut, containing seven madrichim. The mazkirut is appointed the weida. The mazkirut formation changes every single year. Right now, we have a mazkir, gizbarit, misradnik, rosh chinuch, rosh kenim, camps organizer and Israel tour coordinator. It is assisted by a shlicha from the Jewish agency and by several va’adot supporting several tafkidim. Habonim-Dror BeHolland has a lot of strengths, of which we are all very proud of.

Our group of madrichim is very solid and intimate, and they are pedagogically strong as well. We’ve got a great group of shnatties again (after a long time), we’re not linked to any Jewish community and we have a growing number of young kids

But, as any dynamic youth movement, there is always a lot to improve. We’re (still) searching for our true ideology and identity, and our socialist pillar sometimes seems to be slowly fading away. In brief, a big challenge lies ahead! Chaverim from other Habo-countries are always welcome to visit our moadon or activities. Our responsibility as a worldwide movement is to support each other and to stimulate each other to drop by and feel like home, even though it’s a different country.

Ideology: The mission statement of HDUK reads, “Habonim Dror exists to build a socialist, culturally Jewish state in the land of Israel.” By this, it means that our ultimate aim is to ensure that Israel becomes a state based on socialist principles of equality and justice, specifically the principles outlined in Israel’s declaration of Independence, and that this state is culturally Jewish. History: HDUK celebrated its 80th anniversary this year, and has a proud history of garin aaliya (where a group of people choose to move to Israel as a “garin”), where these groups have gone together to build Kibbutzim. Kfar Hannassi, Kfar Blum, and Kibbutz Tuval are three examples of Kibbutzim set up by former HDUK members, with many of those members still living there today. Structure: Chanichim begin coming on machanot at age 9 or 10. There are 5 machanot, one for each year group, which runs every summer, as well as Israel tour. Summer camps attract around 400 chanichim. There is also a smaller Winter Camp, over Christmas, which brings all of the year groups together onto one sight, as well as a “Social Action Tzevet”, a tzevet of Madrachim who educate everyone else on the camp about social justice and various socially active projects. After the Shnat programme, the bogrim spread around the various university towns across the country, and come together to get involved with Social Action projects (befriending Darfuris) or to do Ulpan. They also come together to celebrate Jewish festivals and Shabbat in a culturally Jewish way. The bogrim also help run the movement in terms of running Hadracha weekends, calling up chanichim and being Roshim and Rakazim for camps. The movement has a Mazkirut, consisting of a member of Habo from each town in which Habo functions, as well as someone from each of the years based in Manchester (where the movement is strongest). Their job is to keep the movement work tzevet accountable and to make sure that the resolutions of the yearly Veida are being followed up correctly.

Habonim Dror Australia--or HDOZ as it is affectionately (if a little irritatingly) referred to—has shaped up to become the powerhouse Zionist youth movement of the South Pacific. Nigh on 100 bogrim, blue sleeves rolled up and accompanied by over a hundred fresh faced madatzim, work day in and day out to spread the messages of Tikkun olam, Shivyon Erech Ha’adam and Hagshama Atzmit to the blossoming Australian Jewish community. As we enter our 70th year of dynamic weekly peulot, biannual machanot, and plentiful sufganiot come Chanukah time, HDOZ seems destined to enter the hallowed halls of Zionist immortality. Habo in Australia operates through four connected but independent kenim which are (from West to East) Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. Each ken runs weekly peulot for all shchavot between grades 3 and 12, junior and senior winter machanot and a junior summer machaneh. All madrichim and senior chanichim gather en masse in January of every year for the greatly anticipated Federal Summer Machaneh. This summer’s machaneh we have named “Moreshet” to honour the powerful legacy that the movement has left on the country in the past 70 years and that we will to continue to shape long into the future. In September the bogrim from every ken gather in Melbourne for the annual ma’apilim seminar where we plan for the federal machaneh and hold our most important Veida of the year. Here we discuss the ideological direction of the movement and vote to make changes that will align our actions with our values. Or to decide that soy sauce should be served with every meal. HDOZ’s written ideology is divided into what we regard to be the principal platforms of our movement. This year Socialism and Zionism were merged to create the indivisible platform of Socialist-Zionism. The remaining platforms are Judaism, Hagshama and Chalutziut. We are incredibly lucky and grateful to have four phenomenal shlichim who are beacons of Zionist light in the suffocating conservatism of diaspora Jewry. Maya, Shai, Eran and Nadav are a huge part of what makes our movement so dynamic.

HDOZ and our close cousins HDANZ are the most isolated Habonim Dror kenim in the world and yet our hearts beat in unison with the Socialist-Zionist pulse all over the globe. We are proud to be on the frontier fighting apathy, ignorance, Jewish disaffection in our community and to be championing the cause of social justice and spreading its eternal message to the youth. Though the world we live in throws many obstacles our way and hard times loom ahead, we look to the future with bright eyes and reaffirm stronger than ever our commitment to shaping the destiny of the Jewish people.

Habonim Dror Aotearoa New Zealand has been alive and kicking for just over 60 years. Our national movement is spread over three kenim in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Every year we have two large camps, weekly meetings in the kenim as well as various seminars about topics and issues we think are important. HDANZ is getting stronger and stronger and we are expecting about 100 chanichim to our summer camp, which is happening in a few months. This is an article, which was recently sent out to our community… Habonim Dror Aotearoa New Zealand has been so jam packed with events this year it's hard to believe its only August! The year started off with a hadracha seminar with both B'nai Akiva and Habo madrichim and madatzim (junior leaders). Over the weekend we planned events, which we could run together in our kenim and also ways to improve communication between the two movements. In February we had a Shabbaton for the senior chanichim in Wellington, which was in coordination with the Hasbarah seminar that the Zionist Federation organised. The weekend was a huge success in terms of uniting the national movement and planting the seed of defending Israel in our chanichim's minds. The bogrim body of 2009 have had some great ideas and the passion that has been brought home from the Shnat 2008 group has been a major contributor to the beginning of weekly meetings in the kenim which have been very successful and beneficial to have an ongoing educational process for the chanichim as well as more opportunities to see their friends. In July we had our annual Winter Camp for the senior groups which was a huge success thanks to Rosh Bianca Kraitzick. The theme of Strength Through Movements allowed the chanichim to focus on developing their hadracha (leadership) skills, and get a deep understanding of various movements, what made them successful as well as other important aspects. Following Winter Camp the first Shnat Seminar took place in Auckland to begin the process for potential 2010 Shnatties. Shnat Hachshara is a year long programme that takes place in Israel and is based around the Habonim Dror ideology, focusing on Judaism, Jewish History, Israel, Hadracha (leadership), Hebrew and group building. The year is extremely beneficial and prepares the participants to come home and continue to run the movement and be involved in

the community.

Currently HDANZ has 6 shnatties in Israel who are on the final component of the year called Kaveret. They are living together self sufficiently in houses, working in schools, with the community and actualising everything they had learnt prior in the year. This past weekend the senior chanichim and madrichim met in Auckland for a Shabbaton followed by the Jewish Education Conference. The weekend was filled with a Friday night community dinner, Habo peulot on the Saturday and finally a day of educational and thought provoking talks by a variety of speakers from over the world. A highlight was the youth panel in which youth leaders in the community addressed the issue of assimilation and ways we can reduce the growing threat of it in a secular society. This weekend was enjoyed by all, and was even more memorable because of the friendships that were created among the Bnai Akiva and Habonim chanichim.
