The Greenhouse Effect

The Greenhouse EffectResponse of gases in the atmosphere bring about temperature changes.

The Greenhouse Effect

Greenhouse GasesGreenhouse gases trap the heat in the lower atmosphereThey allow visible light and some infrared and UV radiation to pass through into the earths atmosphere. The earth absorbs the solar energy and transforms it into longer wavelength radiation or heat. Heat is absorbed by molecules of greenhouse gases and emitted at shorter wavelength radiation. Maintains the earths temperature. Human activity puts large quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere

Examples of naturally occuring greenhouse gasesWater Vapour(H2O(g))

Carbon Dioxide(CO2(g))

Methane(CH4(g))

Global WarmingDefinitionGlobal warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.

Effects of Global WarmingThe effects of global warming are the environmental and social changes caused by human emission of greenhouse gases. These effects include :rising sea levels due to thermal expansion and the melting of glaciers and ice sheets.warming of ocean surface leading to increased temperature stratification.increased sea temperature leading to long term damage of coral reefsincreased global temperaturesextreme weather events. For e.g some countries are experiencing weather colder or hotter than normalplants and animals are forced to migrate due to the rise in temperature. They are moving away from the equator and closer to the poles.Effects of Global Warmingdeath of humans- heat waves are the cause of some human deathsdeath of plants wildlife- it has been reported than some polar bears are drowning because they have to swim longer distances to land.increased temperature leads to increased air pollutionheavy precipitation and floodingdroughts
