Admission RequirementsIn addition to all requirements of the Graduate School, the Department of Chemistry requires three letters of recommendation and the general GRE. Review of applications begins January 15 for fall admission. Students are not generally admitted for spring semester. Qualified students are supported with teaching or research assistantships.

The Department of Chemistry offers research-based programs leading to Master of Science and PhD degrees in Chemistry, giving talented, motivated students the chance to make discoveries in chemical science and related disciplines.

The department also collaborates with the Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences to offer a Master’s International Peace Corps program in Applied Science Education (www.ed.mtu.edu/peacecorps) which allows students to combine service in the Peace Corps with an MS degree.

In addition to research, degree requirements include course work (MS and PhD), qualifying exams (PhD), and presentation of your written thesis (MS) or dissertation (PhD).

Personalized Attention, Opportunities for ExcellenceAll MS and PhD students in chemistry work closely with a faculty advisor in research groups of two to six. In this personalized environment, students become the primary experts on their topic and contribute to all aspects of the project. Students have direct, hands-on access to department instruments and often participate in interdisciplinary research. Most eligible students receive financial support through teaching or research assistantships.

We are looking for students with a strong background in chemistry and the motivation and enthusiasm to pursue new and unsolved research questions.

Leading-Edge FacilitiesThe chemistry department maintains modern analytical instruments, including a 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, and an electrospray mass spectrometer. Gas, liquid, and supercritical fluid chromatographs, and UV-Vis, atomic absorption, fluorescence, and FTIR spectrometers are also available. Specialized equipment includes a laser Raman spectrometer, a supercritical fluid extraction system, an X-ray diffractometer, flow injection analyzers, a gel permeation chromatograph, and thermal analyzers.

Research OpportunitiesOur students conduct breakthrough research in areas as diverse as molecular probes in medicinal chemistry; design of chiral ligands and synthesis of combinatorial libraries; bio-organic projects including recombinant expression of alkaline phytase and signal transduction in plants; mutational analysis of proteins and chemical synthesis of inhibitors; identification of transient radical compounds in tobacco smoke; synthesis and analysis of ultrasensitive fluorescent probes; polymer synthesis and testing related to nanoparticles, nanofibers, and bio-composites; vibrational spectroscopy of solid-state structure; theoretical/computational chemistry projects on nanoscale materials and phase equilibria in complex systems; and the development of quantum chemistry methods and computer programs focusing on the coupled-cluster theory as applied in organic and bio-inorganic chemistry. Points of Priden Chemistry students have coauthored over thirty publications in the past two years.
