Geometry in the Real World

Gavin Hallford P.2

PointA point is a single spot on a line or a grid. This map represents a coordinate grid with a single point marked on it.

Line (segment)A line is a straight path that has no thickness and extends forever. This street is a line segment that goes in one line in two directions.

PlaneA plane is a flat surface that has no thickness and extends forever. Each one of the squares on the sidewalk are planes, they are flat surfaces that can hold points in it.

AngleAn angle is a figure formed by two rays with a common end point. The elbow is set at an angle from the bones meeting like the rays.

Perpendicular linesTwo lines that intersect at a 90 degree angle. The two streets (lines) intersect at 90 degree angles making perpendicular lines.

Parallel linesLines that are in the same plane and do not intersect. The Highways(lines) I20 and I30 are parallel to each other.

TriangleA triangle is a three sided polygon. In this image there are 4 triangles each are equilateral.

Right triangleA right triangle is a triangle with one right side.A right triangle is a basic support for a house roof that is set at an angle.

PentagonA pentagon is a five sided polygon. The Pentagon is a base that is set in a pentagon shape for structural support

SquareA square is a four sided polygon.A pillow cushion is a square so it can evenly fit your body on it.

RectangleA rectangle is a four sided polygon with two sides longer than the others.A TV screen is a rectangle for better view and a larger screen.

TrapezoidA trapezoid is a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel lines. The Mayans used trapezoids for their structure is basic and easy to use.

ParallelogramA quadrilateral with exactly two pairs of parallel lines. This building is parallelogram because this shape is fancy and hard to make and keep up as a building.

CircleA circle is a perfectly round shape with no open sides. This a crop circle it is very famous for the sight from above and it is easy to make.

CylinderA cylinder is a 3-d object with the two faces being circles. Coke cans are cylinders because they are easy to make and hold a lot of liquid because it has a large volume.

sphereA sphere is a 3-D object that is perfectly round.A baseball is a sphere because it is small and easily effected by friction and can be thrown long distances.

Octagon

An octagon is an eight sided polygon.A stop sign is an octagon because it is an odd shape that is easily seen by drivers.

CubeA cube is a 3-D object made up of six squares.Dice are cubes so they can have six numbers on it and can easily tumble around.

Pyramid Pyramids are 3-D objects made with a base of a square and four sides of triangles. The Egyptians used pyramids as tombs for the easiness of the shape and it was simple to understand.
