Frequently Asked Questions On Kratom

What exactly is Kratom?

As expected, this is the most frequently asked question when it comes to this wonderful herbal remedy that has proven to be an effective remedy for a myriad of health complications. Kratom is generally a tree native to Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia. It is known as Mitragyna speciosa in its botanical name. Interestingly, Kratom is in the same family as that of the coffee tree i.e. the Rubiaceae family.

With that being said, Kratom leaves have been used since time immemorial as herbal remedies to relieve such things as headaches, tired muscles and muscle pains, stiff neck, anxiety, depression, stress etc. In low doses it is used as a stimulant and in high doses as a sedative. It also acts as a pain killer for a myriad of complications, it helps treat diarrhoea, it is a recreational drug and is also used to treat opiate addiction among many other conditions.

How is Kratom Taken?

Originally, people from the Southeast part of Asia would chew the leaves fresh from the tree after removing the central vein. Others would dry the leaves and chew them dried, although most would prefer to crush them into powder so they are easily soluble in water, apple sauce or fruit juice. Be advised that Kratom has a repulsive taste so mixing it in a sweet drink makes it easy to swallow. Still, others would boil either dried or fresh leaves to make a paste-like extract. The best thing with this strong tea is the fact that it can be stored in the fridge for later use. Today, Kratom is available in every imaginable form from capsules, powder, to liquid etc.

Does Kratom have any side effects?

When taken in the recommended dosage, Kratom acts as an effective stimulant while a high dosage acts as a sedative. This is attributed to the active alkaloids present which contain both sedative and stimulant effects. Whether it will act as a stimulant or a sedative when taken would depend largely on your genetic composition, your fitness level, and your blood sugar levels.

Stimulant – its stimulating properties include improved physical energy, increased sexual energy and a more alert mind and body. One would be more talkative, sociable, and very friendly than normal.

Sedative – as a sedative, one would be less sensitive to emotional or physical pain, one would generally look and feel calm and collected, one would experience some sweating or sensational itching, the pupils may become constricted and sometimes someone may feel nauseated.

Just how safe is Kratom?
