Our curriculum emphasizes the Western tradition, and you will analyze artwork in the social, historical, and philosophical contexts of Western culture. As an undergraduate, you will learn everything you need to know to pursue a career in gallery and museum management, visual technology, arts administration, education, research, curation and restoration, or art and antique connoisseurship. We can also prepare you to move onto the graduate level, as our program offers a unique opportunity to receive a strong foundation in fine art as you hone your research and analytical skills in art history courses.

You will be able to pair your art historical interests with relevant studio coursework, blending two worlds to gain a far richer understanding of artistic production and become a stronger art historian and critic.

LOOKING AT ART & DESIGN

We will examine the art, archaeology, architecture, and ideology that comprised the foundation of the ancient Greek civilization, and how it has influenced Western culture. You will write and present research papers to critically assess how such a culture became a fundamental phenomenon ingrained in the values and arts of today.

In this course, we will introduce you to the fundamental principles of art and design through visual analysis. Our curriculum focuses on a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, and graphic art, and will provide you with a context to engage in the art historical and cultural appreciation of two- and three-dimensional art.

We will impart knowledge of traditional methods of production and techniques used by the great artists of our past to help you understand their work’s intention and value. You will develop an appreciation of their artistic methods and how they directly relate to how we understand the work as we discuss its creation.

As a graduate of our Art History program, you will be a passionate and determined thinker. You will challenge people’s understanding of past cultures and discuss art and architecture through their place in our own historical narrative.

What We Teach

All art history starts from a foundation of theory. As an art historian, you will use theory to challenge scholarship, and through that dialogue, find your own voice and methodology on the way to becoming part of the next generation of intellectuals and art history specialists.

Our curriculum includes a broad range of courses, from introductory survey courses to upper-divisional seminars in concentrated areas. Our program offers courses covering Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Early Christian, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, 18th and 19th Century, American, and Modern art and architecture.

We will train you to marry the historical and material study of art through an understanding of artists, periods, and styles—by learning about the past to make it come alive in the present.

MARIA MATTHIES Education Assistant, Legion of Honor

Working in a museum has been Maria Matthies’ “forever dream” since she was eight years old. A school activity in third grade involving the Mona Lisa and a Piet Mondrian piece sparked an interest in art that has grown over the years, leading her to an internship at the Legion of Honor.

While a Master’s student in art history at Academy of Art University, Matthies headed to the stunning beaux arts building once a week to teach sixth graders about art through an award-winning program called “Get Smart

“ When I was looking for an internship, I knew I wanted to be doing something in museum studies, and museum education is a great entry point for my professional career. Also, it’s so important that kids have this opportunity, since a lot of kids don’t have art in their schools.

With Art: Past and Present.” The program invites Bay Area students to go deeper into art by leading them through activities where they form their own gallery exhibits, investigate ancient objects and select a detail from an artwork to draw themselves.

“I love it,” says Matthies. “It’s really fun and it’s great to work with all the different kids. When I was looking for an internship I knew I wanted to be doing something in museum studies, and museum education is a great entry point for my professional career. Also, it’s so important that kids have this opportunity, since a lot of kids don’t have art in their schools.”

17

Maria Matthies teaching at the Legion of Honor.

After graduating from UCSC in 2009, Matthies and her husband set off for Germany so she could learn the language in preparation for a Master’s degree in art history. “The museum in Stuttgart was beautiful,” she recalls. “I went there all the time. It really cultivated my appreciation of German art.” Matthies has been drawn to museums ever since that third grade spark of inspiration, and seeks them out wherever she goes. During trips to visit her grandmother in Colorado, she always includes a visit to the Denver Fine Arts Museum.

“She’s one of our best art history majors,” says School of Art History Director Gabriela Sotomayor, “and I really am proud that she’s using her skills and transforming them into a wonderful opportunity not just for herself but also for the museum visitors to learn about art. It’s a beautiful example of what you can do with an art history degree.”

In February 2015, surrounded by Victorian paintings, Matthies instructed a group of sixth graders on drawing techniques. Animatedly, she discussed shading, smudging and texturing. Then she passed out paper and pencils and instructed the students to choose a detail from one of the paintings in the gallery, and then draw it. Girls in navy blue sailor dresses and boys in hoodie sweatshirts set up their stools in front of paintings like John Martin’s The Assuaging of the Waters and Konstantin Makovsky’s The Russian Bride.

“She possesses all the qualities we look for in an intern,” says Emily Jennings, Manager of School and Teacher Programs at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “She has a clear skill set about how to make activities developmentally appropriate for students. And we’re able to give her a great understanding about museum work. So it’s a great exchange.”

“San Francisco’s such a historical city,” says Tammy Tran. “I knew I wanted to be in a city that’s rich in culture and art and filled with art galleries.”

“All of my classes—taught by all these top art historians and students of art history like me—helped me understand art on a much deeper level,” says the 2014 graduate of the BFA program, who is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Washington, D.C. “Plus, I was able to take advantage of classes from

other schools and learn about other media, like metal work, oil painting, and printmaking, which is my favorite.”

“One of the best parts out of attending the Academy was the chance to go out into the city and learn from and work in local museums and galleries,” she says. “I loved that I could lessons from class to very practical work at places like the Asian Art Museum. It made for an even better experience.”

“ Not only did the Art History program teach me to read and analyze art, but it also taught me to truly look at art. In fact, I think that was one of the best things I learned from my instructors in the Art History program.- Tammy Tran, BFA Art History alumna

How The Courses WorkCREATE YOUR OWN CLASS SCHEDULEWhen you take online courses at the Academy, you are free to manage your own time; there are no set class schedules that require you to be online at specific times of the day. Course content is divided evenly across 15 modules spread out during a semester. Each module’s coursework—instructional videos, audio-enhanced slideshows, digital documentation, interviews, and more—is made available at the start of each module period.

ENGAGE YOUR PEERS You may work and study independently, but that does not mean you cannot call on the support of your online classmates. Each course offers a class discussion area where students and instructors can freely exchange thoughts, post work, and provide or receive creative feedback. The discussion area’s sole purpose is to give you and your peers the opportunity to support one another’s development as artists.

To find out more, contact an admissions representative or visit www.academyart.edu/online-education.

Online Education

BONNIE PANGMFA, School of Illustration

“Academy of Art University’s Online Education provides me the privilege to receive quality education while staying with my family in Hong Kong. The program’s flexibility gives me great freedom to manage my time, work on side projects, and even come to study abroad for the summer semester! I have especially benefited from the online career talks which helped me land my current position at an animation studio.”

ARTHUR BULLOCK JR.MFA, School of Animation

“Online Education at Academy of Art University was a perfect fit for my lifestyle for several reasons. Working toward a graduate degree in visual effects, I knew I wanted to go to one of the top schools in the field. With their online program, I can complete courses from anywhere on the planet, and continue learning industry-proven techniques that will help me advance my career to the next level.”
