From the President… Our last Newsletter was finalized before our Installation Luncheon on April 28 so here are some highlights:

-Jill Passeretti, outgoing State President, and Ethel Simmons, outgoing Highlands DVP, joined us as we thanked those leaving their TMC Board positions and welcomed new Board members, serving May 2016 – April 2018. Ethel led the lovely Installation Ceremony of new Board Trustees.

-$34,500 was presented to the MCH from TMC fundraising (Bazar, WWW, Spring Luncheon, and Catering).

-Order of the Lily, the highest NJSFWC honor, was awarded to Ginny Campion for her service to TMC and for her efforts to create ‘Time Out’ for seniors (Ginny was away and will receive her pin at WWW).

-Kathy Clark and Georgine Wieland were recognized as 25 year members and Pam Higgs as a 50 year member.

Seven TMC members attended the NJSFWC State Convention on May 2-4 and all of our entries in Arts Achievement and Conservation and our Press Book won at the State Level plus three of our reports won for Best all Around Work. (See Federation Focus and the Arts article for more about the Convention & our winners.)

The first week of May was rainy but we were fortunate to have only clouds for our Ellis Island trip on May 5 when 34 of our members and friends learned about Ellis Island and found many of their families’ names on the Wall.

Next, on Saturday, May 7, at Madison’s May Day, eight of our members braved the rain to clean up the Madison train station garden and then mulch the MCH gardens. We had fun beautifying the

areas, but we especially enjoyed the conversation over the warm coffee and cake Janet Allocco had for us at the House.

Wise Wonderful Women on May 12 featured a most enjoyable and inspiring film, ‘Advanced Style’ starring seven women of a certain age with eclectic fashion sense and vital spirits. One of the stars, Debra Rapoport, spoke to us about creating her glamorous outfits from recycled and thrift shop items. In addition, Ginny Campion, definitely one of our Wise Wonderful Women, was presented with her Order of the Lily pin.

Then on May 17, at the J&M Plant sale, where a percentage of all TMC purchases is given by J&M to the TMC, we raised $540.

Congratulations to Indio Pluchino, the sixth grade winner of the TMC Patriotic Essay Contest from the Madison Memorial Day Parade Committee. (More on this in late June newsletter education edition.)

Coming up in June: the Culinary Institute and Hyde Park trip on June 9 and the Garage Sale on June 16-18; see Garage Sale article for details.

SAVE THE DATES… Looking ahead: enjoy a live band at Music of Our Lives on Friday, September 9 (see Flyer) and plan to do some dancing at ‘TMC Rocks’, our Rock and Roll Dance on Friday, October 21.

Hope to see you at our June events but, if not, I wish everyone a wonderful, relaxing summer!

~Karen Jeisi, TMC Pres.

*** Federation Focus *** New Jersey State Federated Women’s Clubs WWW.NJSFWC.ORG

Seven members of the Thursday Morning Club attended the annual New Jersey State Federated Women’s Clubs Convention led by the outgoing President, Jill L. Passaretti. in Atlantic City at the beginning of May. We attended several interesting workshops, including Advocates for Children-Ideas, UNICEF Human Trafficking and Growing Good Gardens. Our own President, Karen Jeisi, gave a workshop entitled Six Thinking Hats: Innovative Decision Making Process Workshop. Karen’s presentation was well received and perhaps we can encourage her to put one on for us! We voted on many resolutions covering issues ranging from “Criminal Background Checks for School Bus Aides” to “Hudson Rivers PCB Clean Up”. We also voted on Proposed Amendments to NJSFWC Bylaws. Our new State President, Jean L. Revis, was installed. Our Immediate Past State President, Linda F. Babeuf, was recognized with resounding applause for her arduous role in helping to keep the LG Corporation from constructing an office building that would have seriously ruined the environment and the view of the Palisades. The 35th Annual New Jersey Women of Achievement Awards was held at Convention and Marjorie L. Strohsahl, Past President of the Highlands District (our district), was a recipient of this honor. She was described as a dedicated and charismatic volunteer who, seeing a need, acts. After a relative died in a fire, she reached out to the National Burn Foundation and began an awareness campaign through fundraising and letter writing. This endeavor led to an anonymous donation of 1 Million Dollars which was directed to St. Barnabas Hospital, making it possible for its Burn Unit to be established. Marjorie formed “First Graders for Food” and founded the Sparta Historical Society. These accomplishments are merely a small part of all that she has done. Personally speaking, she was also the NJSFWC leader for the NAMI Project which has just officially ended. Final numbers for this will be released soon. Our new State Project is Prevent Child Abuse. On June 8, Karen Jeisi, Anne Lawless, Peach Bolton and I are attending the Highlands District Council where we will learn more about this.

We were very pleased to receive many awards at the convention. The winners of the Arts Achievement and Conservation certificates are found in the “Arts” article. Also three of our Annual Reports, Membership, Fundraising and Leadership, had won Gold at the Spring Conference making each eligible to compete at Convention. I am happy and proud to say that all three reports won the Grand Prize here. Although Karen, Michal and I compiled, wrote and submitted the final reports, the material we wrote about was possible due to the volunteer efforts of all of you! And finally, our Pressbook, which contains all publicity about TMC/MCH submitted to newspapers, online sites, Facebook, etc. by Peach Bolton and the Communications committee and compiled in an orderly and meticulous manner by Kathy Trombacco also won the Grand Prize. Look out for the next Newsletter for the wrap-up on the Fundraising committees. Please call me with any questions about “serving” and “socializing” opportunities with the Thursday Morning Club. You are always welcome to join any committee of the Thursday Morning Club. Please call (973-822-2202) or email ([email protected]) me with any questions. ~Carol J. Schessler

Public Issues… As a TMC delegate at the NJFSWC Convention in May, I attended a workshop regarding Human Trafficking, held by UNICEF representative, Mansi Menta, who stated that the most vulnerable were children (abused, homeless, runaways, or in foster care). Although New Jersey does not have one of the highest rates of human trafficking, it does exist here with neighboring New York being one of the four (4) highest rated. There are signs that a child is being trafficked: knows little about his/her whereabouts; works excessively long hours; exhibits fear or anxious behavior; hired with false promises; and has inconsistencies with his/her story. If you have suspicions about possible child trafficking or would like more information, call the UNICEF hotline at 888-373-7888 or text "INFO" or "HELP" to: “BR FREE" (233733).

********** In the past month, the Madison Police Department has received multiple calls and reports of individuals being targeted by an IRS phone scam. The callers can be very aggressive and threaten arrest if not paid. Do not give these people any information as the IRS does not conduct business in this manner. If you suspect that you are being victimized, hang up and directly call the IRS at 800-829-1040 or your local Police Department for any other form of scam (Madison: 973-593-3000). Booklets, provided by the Madison Police Department concerning fraud, phone scams, ID theft are available at the Madison Community House to pick up and share with other members and friends, as supplies are limited.

********** Although the NJFSWC State Project for 2016-2018 is no longer NAMI, (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the Federation is still actively working to improve standards for the mentally ill. The bill, A2189, came out of Committee on May 19 and is now awaiting approval in the full Assembly. Please lend your support to this important piece of legislation and contact your State Representative with the request that they vote "YES" on this bill.
