Hampton, Virginia, has a fascinating history. In1606, three ships sailed from England to the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay; they named the site Cape Henry. As they explored the area, they discovered a site -- Old Point Comfort -- and declared it to be a good defensive location because it was at the entrance to a body of water that later became Hampton Roads. In 1610, colonists took possession of a Native American site, Kecoughtan, and established the town of Hampton; it was incorporated as a city in 1849.
Slaves from the south sought refuge at Fort Monroe and established the Grand Contraband Camp. Later, they initiated educational efforts that led to the creation of Hampton University, which is the site of the national landmark, Emancipation Oak. This beautiful tree is a must-see for visitors to the Hampton area. It is 98' in diameter and one of National Geographic's Ten Great Trees of the World.
